Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

I called the school in relation to Gateway, and they said once in General Studies you need to have a 3.75 GPA in 4 classes to transfer into a major. That might be nuanced -

  • overall 3.75 or just in 4 classes
  • which 4 classes - business specific class or core classes
  • Are you prioritized against others looking to get into that major and actually need a higher GPA to make the cut?
  • Is there a seat cap per major?

In our case the questions relate into being accepted into Mays Business School.

Okay, so yeah Mays is a beast. It is like no other. There are required courses, must have As in them, 30 hours AT Tamu (not dual credit hours) before you can apply to change major. They only accept 100 per YEAR!.. You are up against EVERYONE wanting to change to Business… so yeah, do not go into Gateway with the only thought of Business. You’ll need a backup major to help you get to your career goals. Unless it’s Acct, then you don’t need a Mays degree!

Many students do Econ if they want Finance or Ag Bus if they want an overall business degree. Some do Psych if they want Marketing, etc. etc. There are many ways to achieve your career goals. Your major is just a tool, one of many.

Can you explain the accounting bit? Is there a non Mays accounting major?

Map to Mays
Will need 3.8-4.0 to have a chance…plus everything @Christi1993 said.
HIGHLY COMPETITIVE

THIS^ is exactly what I was thinking is the case.

We made it a requirement to attend schools where there was a direct admit to Business. When paying OOS tuition, it just doesn’t make sense for us.

Your insight is much appreciated.

No. I’m saying wanting to go into accounting as a career is the only reason one would have to go into Mays.

Agree. Not worth the risk for OOS $ (IMO). In a year or so when there’s more space in the program, it will be a slightly different story.

S23 applied to May’s last year. After researching how difficult it is to get entry to May’s directly or through alternate pathways, we changed his major to Engg. He also got into Kelley at IU but not direct admit. That came off his list for the same reason. If you have direct admits for business, please consider those.

If you don’t mind sharing, did he get into Kelley via petition before enrolling? I’m not sure what to think of IU and Kelley in that regard. I heard once into IU it’s not hard to get into Kelley but I’m skeptical. DS has direct admit to Purdue Biz, which I think is a good offer.

Last year, the petition to Kelley was a revelation. Based on his stats (3.61W / 1420 SAT) and researching previous year threads, we thought he would have a good shot through the petition process, but he was finally denied. He was pretty clear he didn’t want the pressure of going through the standard admit process for Kelley (which requires threshold grades in certain courses). We also had other, more attractive options such as Purdue (IBE), FSU, Pitt etc. which were in our final list.

@52AG82 I doubt I will get into A&M Engineering but I was able to get into UTArlingtons and Texas Techs. Between the two which one would be better?

Both EXCELLENT for Engineering…can’t go wrong with either one.

Agree with @Momof3B -both great choices! I’d lean towards Tech, because we know friends who have graduated from their Engineering school.

UTA is suburb of Dallas, can be a little ‘commuter-ish’.
Tech is in Lubbock, huge sports (Big 12), more ‘true college’ feel (IMO).

Just depends on what vibe you want. Proud of you!

Such different school experiences. I’d definitely visit Lubbock to see how you’d see yourself there.

Agreed! I have one at both lol.

Tech will definitely give you the residential collage life experience, big sports (the atmosphere is electric!!), BEAUTIFUL campus and the College of Engineering just dropped the mandatory study abroad requirement, which ALOT of people objected to.

UTA is very commuterish, but if you’re looking for the big fish in a small pond environment that’s the place to be. My son was high stats, got accepted into the Honors College, direct admit to CS, scholarship that almost covers all of tuition and got a job in the College of Engineering as a Student Ambassador and works directly under the Dean. He’s making amazing connections as a Freshman! The big rah-rah sports environment didn’t really appeal to him. The dorms at UTA are fabulous, all bright and modern and new. Weekends are quiet, not much to do, and all the new friends he’s made commute but since we live 35 minutes away, he can come home whenever he wants (but he doesn’t lol).

@Momof3B great details!

My son has had no updates at all to his Howdy portal and still just says in review. I had him apply to Galveston laat week, as honestly i think this would be a good fit for him for Freshman year. Does anyone know how competitive it is to get in. I thought my son would be considered for at least Team but nothing so far and sounds like this will likely not be an option. Thanks for any feedback on Galveston admissions.

Thank you all for the very pleasant information. I will make sure to look in to it more.

Just got PSA (International and West Texas) around 5pm today! Not what we expected or wanted. Just putting it out there for people still in review without the buttons. Good luck everyone! :pray:t3:

With your son’s application to TAMU, he will be considered for Galveston for his first year. Those offers should be rolling out in the next week or two. As far as applying directly to Galveston, sorry I don’t know anything about how that works.
