Empty dorm room! I wanted my daughter to get a feel for what it would be like to live in the dorm and eat in the dining hall and I had never experience that either! I was a commuter student and lived off campus when I went to college. If you want comfort, stay the hotel for sure. The dorm is just basic accomodations. You each have a twin bed with minimal bedding, they suggest you bring your own bedding and towel. It is cheap!
I would add to avoid the Comfort Inn. We stayed there out of desperation one football weekend because it was the only thing available. Never again.
I feel like we’ve stayed at almost all of the places listed above over the last 20 years plus a couple of Holiday Inns/express, Homewood suites, Home2 suites…those were fine.
@JessAg97 there are definitely some others ‘to avoid’. And if they have availability for football games, Family Weekend or graduation…there’s most likely a reason why🤮
We stick with our favorites…or don’t stay.
The A&M hotel and conference center is nice, and it’s on campus close to where a lot of the NSC stuff occurs.
We enjoyed staying in the dorm too - both times. Had fun renting the bikes and scooters on campus and riding around
This is where we are staying 6/27-6/28
I’ve gotten burned by the train both times. I stayed there when I was recruiting at a career fair. I swear I think at least three trains came through each time at all hours, and it was so loud. It’s so convenient and a really nice facility, but I need sleep.
How does the schedule work in the evenings, for parents and kids? We live about an hour from CS, my gut is just to drive home…
Nope, don’t do it. Book a hotel for 2 nights.
We live in far West Houston, under an hour away.
Day 1 starts early. Don’t risk 290, Aggie Expressway & Hwy 6 traffic/accidents, then have to fight parking on campus.
Day 1 is exhausting. Spend the night in town-walk around campus at night, get a good meal, work on schedule prep.
Day 2 starts early-again, not worth risking travel & accidents. Day 2 is over very early afternoon.
We are in West Houston by the City Center too!
Hi! So, my son is still waiting to hear back from two schools, but I think it is 95% likely he is going to pick A&M. I’m starting to stress about the fact that NSCs are filling up. Anyone have a sense of how likely it is we could get a July NSC date if he waits until the end of March or early April to make a decision? I’m starting to think it’s worth taking the risk on losing the $250 deposit, but is that commitment binding? He’ll be in Mays.
July dates and August are normally the last to fill, shouldn’t be a problem to get July.
FWIW-my Mays girl purposely chose a July date, when she was an incoming freshman. She registered in under 3 minutes. July is less crowded, as well.
It’s a Myth that you HAVE to get the earliest NSC, for class registration. They open up seats at EVERY NSC (minus August) to be fair.
Registering for NSC is considered ‘accepting’, but it isn’t binding. You’d just be out the NSC fee.
Be sure to cancel Housing contract by May 1, if he’s in Housing queue and decides not to go.
We kind of neighbors, we are in the area
To those that are trying to sign up for parent access on Howdy, we were able to sign up for the billing part a couple of weeks ago but the access to academic records never worked. The link took us to a screen that showed this week’s calendar. We finally called the help desk today and they did not know so they “opened a ticket” on it. I got an email back today saying you can’t sign up for parent access on the academic portion until after registering for classes during NSC. I’m not sure if this is right or not and I can’t remember having any problem doing this with my older student, but just in case your student is unable to give you access right now, maybe it will work after NSC.
We toured Parkwest and The Standard and liked both. Parkwest is a lil bit further vs standard being close to main campus. Though for Blinn we were told because of traffic etc the standard can be a bit harder to commute from. We are most likely going with standard though it’s more expensive but it felt closer and more central.
We signed up for 5/23 NSC, but changed to 7/11 this evening based on the advice. Quite frankly, I just grabbed the first one this morning because I was scared they’d pull it back if I didn’t (after last nights horrific experience).
@sh2377 The Standard is great! Higher floors have great sunset views!
Most kids commute back & forth to RELLIS on A&M bus…much easier vs driving out there.
@SGTGold May is so hectic, you’ll be glad you switched dates.
And trust me…book 2 nights in a hotel for NSC, don’t try to drive back & forth.
@RBT26 they go over setting up Parent Howdy during NSC, there’s a whole session on it.
Absolutely no rush to set up. And even when set up, it is super limited as to what you can access.
I only used it to add Dining Dollars, print a transcript and download/print 1098t.
Yes, it is definitely more limited than what the kids have, but I use my Howdy portal all the time for my sophomore. It is good to be able to see their schedule so I don’t call when he’s in class. Also, nice to see grades (mid-term and final) and of course the financial part.
