Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

OH no! My son’s friend chose both, and he is still waiting. So worried for him. We were so close to choosing both, but this thread helped us decide.

Not for anyone to extract. But accountability report can be requested.

I’m just devastated. My son’s friend who picked both waitlist and team just got PSA today. He is top 15% at the same school with a high SAT score. I told his mom that this thread recommended TEAM only, but she had already picked both. I think about the day we got three options and how I read all the posts on here. This could have been Hunter. It breaks my heart for this family. Both the Mom and Dad went to A&M and their daughter is there now. We know kids in the top 19% and 22 % from our same school that got TEAM only in January. How does this happen?? I feel such empathy for their family tonight.

I am so thankful for all of your advice to help us make sure Hunter is an Aggie next year!

@Aggies1997 what was his SAT, majors choices and when did he apply?

When the major in waitlist is full (enough NSC registration on that major), and TEAM is full, that can result in PSA. It will be curious if someone chooses “TEAM only” and gets PSA. As mentioned in a number of years, choosing anything with waitlist implies students have other college options.

A lot of PSA paths and majors are very practical to transition to TAMU main campus. About 20% of external transfers are from PTA and PSA. The public may compare UT CAP system with TAMU PSA and regard both as soft-reject, but PSA is a much better offer.

In this cycle, most outcomes are still pretty much the same as previous ones. Only exceptions are late TEAM decisions and higher score requirements. Overall, TAMU is still working within their predefined schedule.

TAMU admission process is not ideal, issues like misguided information on “test optional” and “waitlist” can easily be fixed without additional cost. Parents need to start educating their students to focus on career instead of dead setting on a particular school.

I think his major is Construction Science, and he had a 1350 SAT. I really wish they would have just picked TEAM.

My daughter is a sophomore in high school and currently top 5%. We are working on planning out the rest of her high school classes. She has taken or will take most of all of the APs that she can and the rest of her junior and senior year will be mostly dual credit. She would have over 40 hours of dual credit by graduation. Assuming she stays in top 10% through next year, is over 40 hours of dual credit too much. Will that hurt her admission?

If this is the wrong thread, can you point me in the right direction? I have another daughter who will be class of 2028 at TAMU next year, so I thought I would ask here.

Construction Science is small and very competitive. I’m guessing didn’t apply in August? Wonder what the 2nd choice major was?
Good stats, hopefully he applied to other schools.

He applied in September :frowning:

@Ag98 over 40 DC hours will keep her out of being considered for Gateway and Blinn TEAM, if she doesn’t stay auto admit/top 10%.

What major, does she know?

I think anything over 21-30 hours of DC limits you once in college. For pathway options as was mentioned but also if they get into school and later change major. Many majors have max credit limitations to change.

If it were me, I’d limit DC and choose AP and then pick and choose what you want to accept and when (or if). Gives the student options, plus if repeat AP class then they should excel and pad that GPA!

The strategy should be taking as many APs as one can, limit the number of DCs to non-core classes. Make sure your student also take the actual College Board AP exams. If your student is a high achiever, AP scores allow her to control her TAMU curriculum, speed of graduation and even taking on double major or a minor.

DC have no choice but to transfer. Most DCs are mapped via TCCNS

https://catalog.tamu.edu/undergraduate/appendices/texas-common-course-numbering-system/

You can see from the link above, most DCs are the relatively easy core curriculum. So even if your student gets into TAMU, all she have left are tougher classes. DC credits won’t be calculated on her TAMU GPA.

DCs course vigor is also not as strong as TAMU classes. So if your student aims for a major that requires another round of review (Accounting, Nursing, Engineering…) DC credits are not as favorable as "A"s at TAMU.

My son chose waitlist and TEAM. He got his TEAM offer last week. I was nervous after reading that we should’ve chosen team only but we know several that picked both and got TEAM this year. All the people we spoke to at A&M said it does not hurt you to choose both. They told us picking both was a great choice.

Having over 40 credits only disqualifies from team and gateway. Does not hurt regular admission. My son will have 60 and his associates degree. He is a sophomore in high school at a healthcare collegiate academy. . If he doesn’t get in he will go elsewhere. He is looking for a school that is a good fit for him. Not trying to be a good fit for a school. He enjoys this healthcare academy and is learning a lot. He will be working as a patient care technician next year at a local hospital. My current Aggie went to the traditional high school in the district and entered A&M as an auto admit with 30 dual credits- core courses. She is in her second year at A&M and has a 4.0. She did have to add a minor due to visualization degree program requirements that don’t permit graduating in less than 8 semesters and scholarship requirements to fill her schedule fulltime but it’s fine.

Programs like team and gateway aren’t designed for students with a lot of college credit already. Texas dual credit programs are growing by leaps and bounds. Lots of students enter with lots of dual credit now. For example, At the public health presentation the dean said it was totally fine and my son would graduate in two years from the public health program if he came in core complete with his 60 credits from the collegiate academy/associates degree. He could also add a minor, or do the 3+ 2 masters program (in less than 3 plus 2). The professional school rep at A&M said most students have lots of dual credit now and that gap years have become the norm before professional school since many are graduating in less than 4. So they can use their gap year or two to study for MCAT and take it and shadow and volunteer and work in healthcare etc etc before applying for professional school.

Since the race appears almost fully run, and in posterity for next years people reading this thread (God Bless your soul if you read through all of February)…

I’ve seen 0 people say they chose Team Only and didn’t get Team. It took a lot longer than past years, but appears to have been 100%.

Those who chose both have been a mixed bag. Any got in (full admit), many got Team, many got PSA or are still outstanding as of today.

Anyone have any data points that argue that?

Yes. There were some that chose waitlist that received an opportunity major. Which seems an even harder path for some majors than TEAM.

Hi everyone! I have an update regarding on-campus housing that I thought I’d share. We were told this morning that if you’re on the waitlist and they get to your place in line, it won’t be until around mid-July. You will not be charged the penalty for canceling the contract after 5/1, but only lose the non-refundable $75 deposit. She also recommended we secure off-campus housing. We were originally hopeful but have decided not to gamble and just sign a lease off-campus. By far (in our opinion) Callaway Villas and U Club are the best options! Callaway House was dark, smelly and damp, expensive, does not have a full kitchen and did not seem well maintained.

I have a question from a friend regarding both TEAM (not TEAB) and Engineering pathways. I know those don’t cross paths, but hear me out …

The friend’s student applied in August with 1st choice of Genetics and 2nd choice of Biomedical Engineering (BMEN). I don’t know any of the student’s stats. The student received Blinn TEAM (since 1st choice was a non-engineering major). However, in the 7 months that passed between applying and acceptance, the student became more interested in BMEN and now wants an Engineering pathway instead.

Options:

  1. Blinn TEAM - Enroll in College Station and try to ETAM into BMEN later.

  2. Engineering Academy - Apply and go to a local Engineering Academy for up to 2 years and try to ETAM into BMEN later.

  3. TAMU Galveston - Apply and go to Galveston for 1 year and try to ETAM into BMEN.

The BMEN advisor told the family that while it’s technically possible to get into BMEN from TEAM (assuming the coursework and GPA requirements are met), it ultimately depends on the number of applicants and could fill up.

The TEAM advisor told them that it’s highly unlikely since TEAM students are evaluated after general engineering applicants and academy applicants. Both advisors seem to say the same thing, with one being more pessimistic/realistic than the other.

@FriscoDad do you have any additional insights? Are TEAM students clearly at a disadvantage compared to other ETAM applicants (CStat Engineering, TEAB, TAMUG, Engineering Academy), assuming all other factors are the same (coursework/GPA)? I know BMEN is a hot major so it’s hard enough already to get in.

I know your “focus on career goal, not college experience” stance. But also understand that the parents want to have a backup plan, in case their student, whose indecisiveness led to this dilemma, has a change of mind on Engineering in the future (or cannot compete successfully) and pursues a different major/career path later.

I already have my conclusion but wanted to know your thoughts.

We (and a good number of others from the thread) have landed at Callaway Villas. Little Gold is quite pumped about the place.

Thanks for the tip to check this place out. I would have never gone if I didn’t see all the posts on here. We plan on signing tomorrow.

Your last post seems on point. My son picked TEAM only and received TEAM. His friend picked both, and received PSA on 3/13.
