Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

The key is being able to register the required classes. TEAM or even BMEN advisors cannot alter the path of a degree plan in Howdy for students so it has nothing to do with whether they are willing to help or not.

Howdy controls what student can register, TEAM students can’t register all the required classes in ETAM. So it is not about disadvantage. It needs a lot of overriding in registration.

TAMU Galveston is the easier path as it participates the one year ETAM. But student will need 3.75+ GPA. Engineering Academy is a 1.5 to 2 year program, also need 3.75+ GPA. And that’s just the beginning.

My suggestion is stay with Blinn Team since the student already secure admission. If maintaining 4.0 GPA after taking Math 151/152, CHEM 117/120, PHYS 206/207 and CHEM 227 (Org CHEM), then can consider internal transfer.

BMEN is not something student just wants or likes, it is a very tough degree plan. In fact from the feedback of my peers TAMU BMEN is the toughest major in Texas. I strongly encourage students review the major degree plan thoroughly. Even getting 4.0 in ETAM, VTPP434/435 are very unforgiving classes in sophomore year I have heard some students getting A took MCAT right away after taking the classes in sophomore year. Not to say TEAM students won’t make it, but it is something really need thorough consideration as that’s a lot of knowledge to absorb in mere two years.

To jump on this one… when we toured UT Engineering and spoke with the Biomedical Engineering Rep she said her graduates are having a hard time finding jobs with a biomedical engineering bachelors…. that her grads are having to tell companies why they should hire them because they are unsure what position they would fit into. We were surprised and it was the reason my son actually decided to do chemical engineering undergrad and then pursue biomedical graduate school.

Also the nice thing about A&M is that engineering has told him that he can do research in cross disciplines so as a chem e he can apply to do research with a biomedical professor. This has been a huge pro on his college comparison list and may be why he eventually picks A&M over UT. We will see. I like A&M a lot, the mom in me just loves that he was already admitted to chem e at UT and wouldn’t have to go through the ETAM process, but it’s not my journey.

UT BME has 4 technical areas, all are a little outdated, but note that almost all BME graduates finish with a MS degree in at least one specialized track. Still UT MS degree job applicants landing rate is 93% with average starting salary of $110K.

TAMU BMEN is more updated and more specialized in six track fields. To be honest I have a hard time finding enough graduates to fill jobs in Cancer Engineering and Cardiovascular Engineering. Every year (in the last decade) health care systems beat me for every single candidate. In most cases, the other half went to medical schools.

MS graduates can continue research and should have no problem secure startup funding for testing labs and design ventures. PhD mostly remain in research at TAMU or other colleges. General public have the common misconception thinking BMEN works for pharmaceutical companies, but in fact only 17% work in those companies. BMEN work in healthcare, labs, criminology, manufacturing, computer science, energy and you will be surprised Google and Apple prefer them over computer science graduates.

Thanks for the info! Yes, he wants to do pharmaceutical research and after talking to many, many people has decided the best route is chem e undergrad and then hopefully a PHD funded research program.:crossed_fingers::four_leaf_clover:

Excellent input. Thank you very much. I’m sure they will find this info helpful in their decision.

What would you suggest as second choice for a kid who wants Mechanical as first choice?

I want him to get in and transfer if needed.

If you are referring to freshmen admission, it doesn’t matter as there is ETAM process. Second can be any STEM major.
If you are referring to ETAM application, it depends heavily on GPA. MEEN will most likely need 3.75 or when holistic, the required classes mostly need to be A. ETAM can choose up to five so there are a lot of choices.

We may be crazy, but my son is riding out the dorm waitlist as long as possible. His NSC is 6/20-21 so at least until then or a little later. He decided it was worth it to get a shot at being on campus. :crossed_fingers:t2:

Ha- my kiddo still 17 and found that amusing too. Is Fish Camp different than the NSC? Assuming we won’t get housing, any off-campus suggestions?

There’s Fish Camp and Impact (faith based Fish Camp). Super popular, sessions fill within minutes of registration opening.

NSC is mandatory.
Fish Camp and Impact are optional.

Thank you! What % of freshmen participate in one of these two programs?

MANY, given every session at both camps will fill immediately. Both teach Aggie traditions, great way to meet incoming freshman.
Do one or the other.
Student needs to literally set a reminder for registration…they will fill THAT quickly.

Impact is more Christian focused but not like in your face.

Fish camp is crazy… fun but crazy. Counselors will meet you in the parking lot to snatch your kid for camp. They’ll have piercings, temp or perm tattoos, head shaved in weird designs (the guys of course), colored hair and all wearing loud clothes.

No housing but tons of hotel options. Some suggestions above but I think the more important thing is which ones to avoid. Ones listed above that I concur with avoiding are both Hamptons (which is super disappointing because that’s usually a solid chain but they’ve let those two go downhill), Comfort Suites (I still cringe thinking of our last stay there a few years ago. :face_vomiting:), Aggieland Boutique Hotel…I’m sure there are others. Just an fyi if you stay at the Hilton, they are currently renovating it. Most other places are ok. I’ve stayed at a ton of them over the years - Aloft, Hilton, Homewood Suites, Tru, Home2Suites, Cavalry Court, the hotel on campus (it’s so nice but both times, the train has come through multiple times in the middle of the night & the horn is so loud it woke me up…), embassy suites, holiday inn…and more. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think the Hilton renovations are complete, or super close to it. Agree about the Hamptons…both are AWFUL.

Hilton hotel should be done. They have a new rooftop bar too.

Since I don’t stay at hotels in town, I can’t say the quality but there are a massive amount of hotels in Bryan college station. Best westerns(the one off hwy 6 behind twin peaks is very nice), courtyard marriotts, the boutique hotel is supposedly nice now. I’ve had friends stay there and said they enjoyed it… there’s the Wyndham guarden that is pretty new. Holiday inns etc. the only la Quinta to stay away from is the one on Texas directly across from campus. All others are great.

NSC is the traditional new student orientation and registration.

Fish camp is a weekend of learning traditions, meeting people, bonding. It’s a camp like experience. It’s optional. If it works for your student scheduling wise it’s fun to do but not necessary if it doesn’t work logistically.

How quickly do fish camp registrations fill up? If he waits until the end of April to register for NSC will there be any open slots for fish camp?

Fish Camp and Impact will fill the day registration opens. There is usually a Wait List for both.
