Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

Others know better but I understand that there are roughly 100 internal and external transfer spots per year. Therefore, an A&M major, stats or otherwise, would need a very competitive GPA (3.8+?) as well as business prerequisites.

A relative of mine chose an Opportunity Major other than stats and hopes to transfer into Mays. He is one semester into his freshman year and had DC transfer courses. We’ll see how it goes. The Opportunity Major contract says it’s not possible to transfer. OM offer comes at the end of the cycle and differs from full admission into stats, sciences and liberal arts offerings earlier in the process.

A stats major is a terrific undergrad degree and could lead to an initial consulting job or one with a big corporation in credit cards, pharma, research, etc. Many one year masters programs like data science are great add-ons as well.

Wow — The OM contract says you can’t transfer to another major? That would be more extreme than PSA, which recommends you not participate with the goal of switching to another major. I do know that PSA students have put in for major transfers and got them.

If after having 40 hours at TAMU and GPA > 3.75, a student can transfer to another non-OM major.

For Mays likely need to be 4.0.

@FriscoDad can you post the graph/stats again, for the number of TEAM Mays pathway students who applied for change of major vs the number that actually got accepted to Mays last year?

(I think that’ll show @kelly8 level of difficulty)

Yes, needs to be 3.9-4.0 AND max 60 hours, for change of major to Mays.

Thanks. Key is GPA requirement and 40 hours at A&M.

For Texas families, a quick question is AP Computer Science a valid option for a year 4 math class? We have had a last minute change to my daughter’s schedule due to the school not being able to staff the dual enrollement calculus class. A&M admissions is so busy I can’t get a reply. (My daughter is already admitted but we don’t want to cause an issue as it is her first choice. We are OOS) Thanks!

If you are already admitted, you have nothing to worry about

What major was she admitted to? It could matter for Engineering.

What do you think A&M considers a high test score, something that would make a student an earlier holistic admit rather than one who is admitted after months and months of review? My son is a junior and desires Mays, but he’s outside the top 10% because he goes to a very small early college high school. Does he need to be in the 1500 SAT range? 1400?

@AggieFam06, I’d say 1420-1450, but @ChristiR93 will have a better say. Needs to be close to Top 10%. Also needs to be ranked 1st Quarter by A&M, and apply early August, for sure.

Wondering about son’s chances. He applied Aug 1st (he was told to apply first day, but in hindsight, feels like he rushed) with low SAT (1220). He applied to Mays with Econ as back up. TAMU has him ranked top quarter, 40 hours DC, 4.1 GPA. Should he change his first choice to Econ or just leave it? Side note: his father was sick but recovered and it was hard on him (I know everyone has struggles). Just found out illness is back so he would really like to be in college station close to his dad. Is blinn team still a possibility with 40 dc hours?

@justus4 unfortunately students with 40 or more DC hours aren’t eligible for Blinn TEAM.

It’s too late to change major-I think-plus all students are In Review now.
A 1220 SAT is going to work against your son, but 1stQ is good.

It isn’t TAMU, but has your son thought about applying directly to the RELLIS campus (since you mentioned he wants to be in B/CS). A&M Corpus Christi offers a business degree.

He hasn’t, but I will have him research it. I am a little confused. All we heard over and over is that test scores cannot be used against you, they can only help you, which is why he submitted his score and didn’t take the test again. He has all the extras mentioned in previous posts (3 year varsity sport, heavy DC/AP curriculum, internship/jobs, etc) but it seems like test scores are absolutely being used against them. Am I wrong? Truly appreciate all input and guidance.

After covid, when TAMU started allowing test optional (like many other colleges), I recall advisors saying if you don’t submit scores it can’t hurt you. After receiving PSA (soft rejection) in 2022 — despite a 3.8 gpa, first quarter, school leadership, bio major and great ECs, I believe that not submitting scores is what did me in. I believe that low scores will definitely not help, though high scores will.

I my son got admitted to first of engineering. His intended major is computer science. I have been reading how competitive to get into CS after first year. I am worried about it. Anyone has any experience on it?

With a few exceptions, you need to get a 3.77 GPA and complete a certain number of classes in your first 2 semesters (or 3 semesters if you do not start in Calc 1) to be placed in the Computer Science major. Read the official policies, but this is how it has been working out the last two years. The trouble is, for some students this is very easy to accomplish, and for others it is very hard, but you don’t know what it will be like for your student going in. There are so many variables (adjustment to college, adjustment to the style of learning, adjustment to the style of grading/testing, and what teachers you get.). You will not likely know the names of your math teachers, etc, at the time of registration, because, for the lower level classes, it can say just “staff” for instructor name.

I saw on Reddit a hand full of Engineering kids got admitted this last week. Two examples had lesser stats than my son. Sure wishing I knew the process they go through to admit kiddos!!!

Two math, two science and two engineering coding classes are main classes in ETAM year.

For CS only, if your student is good in calculus (Calculus BC scoring 4/5), can consider waiving Calculus 1 via AP, take Calculus II and discrete math or differential equations to fulfill ETAM requirement. That way, if not getting 3.8, the student is still a stronger candidate in holistic review. The two science classes are Chem I, Chem II or Physics 206. Those need to make sure students keeping up with classes and no absence.

For students not very confident in Calculus, the risk is rather high if target majors are hot (CS, AERO, MEEN, BMEN, CHEN) and should consider colleges that admit directly to majors.

Note that engineering classes in sophomore years and onwards are a LOT tougher. ETAM classes are supposed to be “easy” and enjoyable for most but largely depends on how students are prepared in high schools.

For those with A&M Engineering experience, how hard is it to get into ME without a 3.75?
