Texas A&M Class of 2030 Official Thread

Both. There are very few lower division (Blinn) classes that he needs to take and Animal Science does not allow more than 75 credits earned prior to full admission at A&M so he would meet that threshold after one semester. He currently has 60 credits.

Too many hours-they won’t even be offered TEAM with an Associates and/or more than 40 (and probably not with 30+). The TEAM program just won’t work.

I feel like this info needs to be shared far and wide (and early). At our district’s high schools, they push DC classes so much. And they are a fantastic option for many students. But for kids who have A&M at the top of their list but who won’t necessarily sail through regular admissions, I hate the idea of them having Blinn TEAM off the table without ever realizing it.

Ultimately it is up to the student/parent, then College Guidance Counselor (who are usually overloaded & overwhelmed), to research colleges-what it takes for admission, majors, etc. In person campus visits and websites list ALL the info. If a student isn’t auto admit (especially at UT, A&M), they need to have a sure fire back up plan, and never count on being offered a pathway.

I agree that many schools are pushing DC; so thankful our district was heavy on AP. IMO, AP is the way to go-rigor is consistent and AP credits are applied when the student chooses, not applied automatically. DC can be a good thing, but often too many hours either push students into upper level classes too early and/or can keep them out of programs/pathways/majors. And the rigor of DC is definitely not consistent.

I was digging around on various message boards when my oldest was a sophomore and found the info on students potentially having too many DC hours for TEAM. I let high school counselors at two schools know (both experienced, driven, and knowledgeable), and neither counselor knew about this 30-40 hour issue accessing the Blinn option. One went to A&M herself and one has kids who went to A&M, so it isn’t like they don’t pay attention to it.

Our district has tons of AP options available but seems to push people into DC classes more consistently (I assume because the credit is all but guaranteed). I do really like that you can apply AP credits when you want, not from the start. This is not something anyone from the high school told us. All I’d heard is that you want to take DC if you are interested in public state schools and should go with AP if you are looking at private schools. There really is more to it.

I’m fortunate to have the time and inclination to do all of this digging myself, but so many just don’t know what they don’t know even as they’re doing their best to navigate all of this.

This is all great info. Thankfully our daughter’s credits are mostly AP classes, I think only 3 Dual Credit classes, so she should still have options. Whew, scared me for a minute lol.

When i work with high school kids/parents i recommend no more than 18-21 DC and they can go wild with AP if they want. Like its been said on here, fewer DC allows more options! And tamu doesn’t count gpa from into tamu gpa but some universities do. That can be a kick in the pants if you get Cs in them because you havent figured it out yet.

Do merit scholarships typically get announced with admissions or do most of those get announced later?

Very little merit given but done post admission.

Financial aid packages come out around February so may include scholarships. My freshman was awarded a merit-based one in June (or maybe even July, I can’t remember). Several others in the parent FB group posted about getting awards that late too. It was unexpected to be awarded one that late, if at all given what we’d heard about them giving very few out. Also check to see if your local Aggie moms’ club or former student club has scholarships for incoming freshman. Mine applied and was awarded one from the local former student club.

Thinking about Housing. If app was submitted on September 12, is Hullabaloo likely?

Housing selection is based on time stamp Housing deposit was paid-what day was that?

Same day. The 12th. I think it was the first day the housing app opened. But it wasn’t first thing that morning.

Ahh! I misread what you wrote-I thought she applied to TAMU 9/12. If she paid Housing deposit the 1st day acceptances went out, she can definitely secure a bed in Hullabaloo! I strongly suggest taking a dorm tour over the holidays-campus is empty, great time to cruise around. Take a notepad and take notes while touring Hulla-see which side she’d prefer (actually rank all 4 sides). The side facing Northgate/University Drive tends to get loud on weekends, 5th floor has highest ceilings, take note of where stairwells and elevators are-this is key! When it is selection time in April, she will select the actual bed/room…so she needs to have a plan!

Great advice! We will do it. Thank you

Christi, has there been a round of December admits? FB page is just full of people still waiting.

I saw a post yesterday about a recent admission, on a Facebook parent page.

This has been a very quiet cycle on this page compared to the year my daughter was admitted (Class of 2028).

I haven’t had or heard of any students being admitted this month. There have been several that have finally received their banners in the mail, but that’s it.

Did the one of FB get the banner or get admitted? There’s always a “wave” in December but it’s usually before now (but it’s also typically a small group).

And agree, it has been sooo quiet this year.

That may be it, the student recieved the banner. I’ll see if I can find the post.
