Decided to quit agonizing about when to get the fresh green beans and got frozen French cut instead. After all, we’re talking about green bean casserole with the onions and the Campbell’s soup. Really, why not have frozen? And now I don’t have to cut them.
My hot water heater went kaflooey in the pool house. 14 people staying there for 2 nights.
Ordered the rest of the groceries online. Going today for massages.
I figured out the timing and what to do each day. Sent out the word it’s byoc. Bring your own containers for leftovers.
As I said earlier on the this thread, we had Thanksbabygivingshower in October with extended family. Friday we talked with D and SIL, and decided H and I will make a small TG dinner and bring to their house along with S. That’s if she hasn’t given birth yet–will be 39 weeks on TG.
She’s still working–as a canvasser. Dont know how she does it.
well i’m writing on this thread for the first time today because my mom’s oven broke and the parts to fix are on back order, and she wants to host the dinner (for 12) at our house. NO, I’m not ready and haven’t given it a second thought. I like to do china and crystal and do it up – but i’m in the middle of some house projects and just am not ready. ** ALSO my bro has lost 100+ pounds and is on a very restricted diet. we are SO SO SO PROUD of him and happy and want to support him. Just not sure how to host a thanksgiving meal with those restrictions! and-- hadn’t thought about it all. So - i’ll look through this thread for inspiration.
@bgbg4us, he could have turkey with no gravy (turkey au jus instead?), green beans or Brussels sprouts or a green salad, maybe a slice of sugar free pie or some fresh berries? Don’t know what kind of diet he’s on, but kudos to you for supporting him.
I also like to do the china/crystal thing. I just bought some beautiful Thanksgiving plaid chargers with matching napkins (from Williams Sonoma’s sale) to put under my DH’s late grandmother’s Turkey settings. I have a big collection of napkin rings to match any occasion. I really enjoy setting a beautiful table. If only I were as good at cooking the meal! Thank goodness for MIL.
Not ready. Barely started (ordered giant turkey legs, cooked by a great local place.) This may turn out to be a modified medieval theme. Or so I’ll tell them. Roast poratoes they can top as they wish, lots of different simple veggies, steamed or only lightly seasoned.) It’ll work.
nrdsb4 - thanks for the au jus idea. it’ll moisten his turkey.
looking over this thread has made me a little stressed actually (brie cranberry recipe looks good though). No food - appetizers & drinks – is bought, house isn’t clean, back room is torn up, need to find another table – Ok. i’ll start focusing NOW.
I’ll start focusing on Tuesday, lol. Today and tmrw are sanding and priming projects. When the that’s done, it’ll be a pleasure to dust and wash floors. Now, just not to get distracted.
Last night, motivated by this thread, I found a light recipe for a cranberry upside down cake/torte. A sort where the egg whites are folded in, to make it light. I can handle that.
I have my mother’s Fostoria glassware, and Thanksgiving dinner is one of the few occasions we use it. When the kids were little, they thought it was “fancy.” This thread just reminded me I need to pull it out and wash it. It makes me so nostalgic.
I’d like to try and lessen the pressure for anyone who needs it - there will be food, there will be loved ones - that is what is important - if the food is less than perfect it’s ok. If your house isn’t picture perfect, that’s ok. You’re probably the only one who notices. <3
That said, went to Kroger this morning arriving about 8:45 - not busy with shoppers yet but they are frantically trying to put the store together after a remodel (?? looks the same to me!) and EVERY. AISLE. was jammed with staff and carts and boxes and cans and bottles of food! What bad timing!
Abasket, my only crisis will be if I forget to buy canned cranberry sauce for the girls. I’ll probably ask one to bring that. They also prefer Stove Top Stuffing, but WILL live without it.
What herbs/spices do you season your turkey with?
Mine is very simple - a little chopped rosemary and thyme mixed with softened butter. I push some under the skin and rub it all over the outside. I don’t use salt or pepper (the butter is salted).
I have always pre-ordered organic whole fresh turkey from wholefoods well this year we r late ordering and it is all sold out! So I have a couple of days left to scour other stores to find one! In a panicky mode now. Lol
Try Costco. We just got one, although the “inorganic” ones looked just as good.
@makemesmart I have always pre-ordered too, but when I pick up, the store always seems to have non-ordered ones, too.
I hope so, since we just decided to do a small turkey after all!
Trader Joe’s should have organic, brined or not brined.
Mr. decided that we needed to swing by TJ. Yikes… There is a Whole Foods in the same shopping center… I hate that parking lot.
@makemesmart I was just in Sprouts, and they have organic turkeys for $2.99 per pound.
@garland that was why I didn’t order it earlier as on the previous pickup days, they were always available. Lots of items on their order menu were sold out too.
Thanks for the Costco/TJ suggestions, we don’t have Sprouts here.
