Welp. I just blithely went off to WF, thinking I could just pick up a small turkey, since we’re doing last minute immediate family Thanksgiving. Nope! But they did let me order one to pick up Wednesday, thankfully.
And so looking forward to WF the day before Thanksgiving…
And in the world of timing. The water heater in the cousin cabin died. Thankfully they can come Wednesday to replace it. A circuit blew and my bedroom and another has no lights. Hubby said it was no big deal to fix but still not my favorite thing to happen when there’s so much to be done.
Totally off topic, but we moved back into our renovated house 25 years ago the weekend before Thanksgiving. The builders and painters put new bulbs in all the rooms so every couple years pretty much all the light bulbs fail throughout the house in November. It’s actually pretty funny.
Yikes! Friends who were bringing the turkey and potatoes and gravy and cranberry sauce have an S with bronchitis. D has a 9 week old! I have not made a Turkey since 1972. Also am poultry intolerant. I can order a full meal for 4-6 for $120 through tomorrow at one of our best stores. There seasoning is always not quite fabulous but I am a good cook and can handle fixing it up. I am making a sweet potato dish, appetizers and a green vegetable.
Besides the food they are the fun part of this holiday and we have been together for 12 years :(( .
Thoughts? If they decid to come they will bring more food otherwise there are just 6 of us and 3 are light eaters. 10 if they do feel he is ok to be around the baby.
We are heading to the in-laws. Since FIL has Stage 4 lung and bone cancer, this will probably be our last holiday with them. I was on the phone with hubby’s niece, she is getting all the food for Turkey day. We’ll (more than likely, me) be helping her get everything ready to eat.
I’m not looking forward to this trip. FIL is in a negative headspace, won’t leave the bedroom; MIL won’t accept outside help and SIL is about worthless. We are going to try to get them to accept caregivers, but they are both stubborn. I’m surprised my hubby is well balanced considering he grew up in a house full of negativity. My mantra for this week is going to be “deep breaths” I understand the feelings they are dealing with but you can’t wallow in it.
The only joy will be seeing hubby’s niece and her 20-month-old daughter.
It also doesn’t help that my hubby’s chemo treatments aren’t being effective so the doctor took him off the chemo infusion and placed him on a pill regimen- 2 weeks (M-F) of pills, 2 weeks off. In the meantime, she is looking into any trials or different drugs that may have more of an impact. While his cancer isn’t growing (too much or fast), he is getting more spots. argh.
Sorry for the long post but this isn’t something I can talk to anyone about on this side and I need to vent. To top it off, the procedure I was supposed to have to get rid of my double vision didn’t work. I get to go in again next month and they’ll try the back door they think they found.
As if this wasn’t enough…When I read my angio CT scan results I also had a nice surprise- #1 was the statement confirming the fistula, #2 talked about spots found on the edge of the scan near the subclavicular area that might be spots. I emailed H’s oncologist and asked her to look at my CT results because I didn’t know who to turn to. She had numerous vials of blood taken from me and ordered a PET Scan. Those results came back as inconclusive- other than for her to tell me she didn’t see anything to stress over. She also got me a referral to see pulmonolgy Monday after Thanksgiving. I finally told hubby about this latest health issue for me. I didn’t want him stressing over this too while he was already stressing over himself and his father.
I will be so glad when 2018 is over. On the plus side- DS moved out and is in his own apartment! So proud to see him on his own and doing well. Now if he would just get out and socialize a little more…
Happy turkey day everyone. I think the nuts are already on the roads…so safe travels.
Still feeling queasy AND now I hear water running in the pipes in the wall in the kitchen, but there is no faucet on anywhere inside or outside the house. No visible water though, so I don’t know what it is. When S was a little boy, he would sometimes leave the hose on outside and I could hear the water running through the pipes. This sounds just like that, but no water is on. I am baffled and not wanting to deal with a plumber. And I haven’t even bought my groceries yet. At least I got the house cleaned yesterday. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and this is really a bummer.
My first floor is a disaster. Do you know how much stuff you can stuff into a family room? All the stuff! I’ve emptied everything out of the family room so we are ready for the carpet installers tomorrow. I will not be putting all that stuff back.
I did 99% of my shopping for Thursday. My fingers are triple crossed that the carpet is installed by early afternoon tomorrow so I can get the furniture back where it belongs and start cleaning the wood floors.
I baked my pies today, so only need to prep the rest of the food on Wednesday. We will probably use chinet plates, and no one will care. We have fun being together and eating and grazing all day and night and can’t wait!
Water on the floor this morning. Plumber on his way. At least my stomach issue is resolved…so far. This might be considered an adventure if I weren’t in it alone.
Water heater repairman on the way. Hubby is being a saint and out doing all the last minute things that tend to pile up to a bunch of different stores.
I’ve made the signature cocktail mix - ina garten’s french 75 - cognac, simple syrup, lemon juice, then top with champagne. I also do sugared cranberries for decoration, snacking and garnish in drinks - put a bag of cranberries in maple syrup and bring to gentle boil, but in fridge overnight to soak, strain the next day and roll in sugar and dry on cookie sheet. Took longer to describe than make. Today I get out the linens, extend the tables, make all the sauces.
Not sure about anyone else, but thrilled it will be so cold- I can use the outside as a refrigerator!
The carpet is being installed! I get so anxious I can’t watch. H is “overseeing” the project lol. I am only putting back half of what came out of that family room. I swear. They should be done within the hour. Hurray!!!
Now take off your shoes and no food or drinks in the family room, except water!
We’ve got several inches of snow falling today so I went after final groceries yesterday afternoon. It was pretty busy and hectic. Meat department was hopping and a handful of shoppers was waiting around the turkey freezer for the new ones to come in off a truck. They were pretty excited (“ooh, a truck!”). It’s a small city.
I’ve called a snow day for myself today and am nesting. House doesn’t need much more than a quick pass with dust cloth and broom. DH and DS1 get in tomorrow evening.
@eyemamom one year we lost power from a hideous ice storm right before Thanksgiving and my kitchen porch saved our perishables!
Cleaned the house a little bit over the weekend. Got flowers for my little turkey centerpiece (will make that later today). Made Mr. put the handle back on the door in the exercise room, framed my bib numbers, tidied up the junk in the basement. Will attempt to bribe him into putting the bookshelves up.
The wine list is set: Delille Cellars Malbec (they sold out of D2 -yikes), Patz and Hall Chardonnay, and Mumm Napa red sparkles. Oops. Scratch P&H - Mr. opened that bottle on Saturday. Rombauer Chardonnay it is then. Sparkle cranberry drink for the non-drinkers.
It’s sunny and 70’s here. Hubby will smoke/grill the turkey and we’ll do a wine tasting on the patio, then champagne and appetizers before the main meal with all doors and windows open. SInce the heat finally broke last month, we’ve started to live outside again. This is the best time of the year. We’re counting the minutes until we pick up kiddo tomorrow night. That makes my whole holiday.
I sometimes ask the deli counter to cut one or more pieces of cooked turkey an inch or so thick. If you don’t need it, it freezes well.
I had the best sweet potato dish yesterday. Mashed sweets, brown sugar, and probably lots of butter. I don’t usually go for anything on sweet potatoes, but this was great. Some may not like this, but I think the brown sugar was put in when the dish was cold (or when it had cooled a bit.) There was an interesting barely detectable graininess that I liked.
I am usually a water drinker who might have one glass of wine at Thanksgiving. I do think a holiday is a fun time to have a couple other “special” beverages. I picked up some sparkling cider (non alcoholic) as well as a couple of bottles of a sparkling pear beverage at Ikea yesterday.
The garbage disposal just started running on its own. Why now? Waiting for maintenance in our building to fix it, and I hope that their fix solves the problem. I sure don’t need this noise when I’m having company here later today til Sat.
