Thanksgiving Travel Thread: Weather affecting your travel??

Seems the weather has to always give me something more to worry about!! Two kids driving home tomorrow - one 2.5 hours away, the other 3 hours. One expecting to leave in a rain/snow mix and one expecting to leave in plain old snow coming down. This mom is a worrier anyway when they are on the road let alone mixing in dark and precipitation!!

Thinking that others around the country are affecting by the wintry conditions. So I dub this the “thanksgiving travel, worry and cheer when your loved ones are home safely” thread!!!

Who’s got children or family traveling??

My parents are coming in tonight. They were supposed to leave this morning but ended up getting hit with some pretty bad lake-effect snow. They were calling for 7+ inches but luckily ended up being about 4 and the storm ended about two hours earlier than expected.

I drove home in the first snow on Saturday here. Passed a five car accident with two of the cars flipped over. When I passed it the next day, the two cars were still there. Drive slow and try to plan to avoid the worst of it.

Best wishes to everyone.

I’ve got a son riding with friends from Rochester to Pittsburgh Wednesday. I have encouraged them to wait until Thursday if the snow is bad Weds. Also a D taking the bus from DC Thursday, which should be OK I hope. I’m glad D in CA is staying put and not flying.

My kids will be driving from CT to PA on Thursday. We’d already decided to celebrate the holiday on Friday since half the fun for us is spending the day cooking together and I didn’t want them driving here after work Wednesday. We have a winter weather advisory Tuesday and Wednesday-- the dreaded “wintry mix”, four inches of snow and icing.

One kid driving home (DC/Baltimore) from North Carolina on Tuesday. He may have to wait until Wednesday. One kid flying out early Wednesday to Florida. Hoping she will get out OK.

Tuesday we may get some freezing rain here, but then it is supposed to change over to all rain… A couple of inches expected Tuesday to Wednesday. Better that than snow or sleet.

My son has been safely home since Friday night, but my 80+ year old in-laws are supposed to be driving here on Wednesday from Syracuse (where there is already snow on the ground!) I’m thinking they are not going to come, even if the snow ends by Thursday morning.

Driving from Ohio to NY tomorrow…may be snowing here, no clue what will be going on in PA which is the bulk of the trip and includes mountains. Fingers crossed…9 hours is tough enough without weather.

I have a son who is supposed fly tomorrow from Rochester to DC and a nephew flying in from CA on Wednesday. I’m hoping the weather holds! Flight delays could be disastrous for such a short trip.

DS will be driving in CT (New Haven) Monday through Wednesday. Even though he has no need to drive to another city, we are still worried. This is because, being from the south, he has never driven in such a snow/icy road condition. Hopefully, he will stay put, rather than drive, after Wednesday. (Likely just a wishful thinking though. His friends who do not have the car may rely on him to go somewhere during the break because he has the (rental) car this week.

He will come home early next week. He will be flying, not driving. Too far to drive.

What’s the weather/road condition in southern CT right now?

Our son is taking the train home tomorrow but we are in So. Calif. and it is beautiful here. Our D is in NYC but unfortunately we won’t get to see her. My thoughts are with all of you with relatives who will be traveling in bad weather.

It’s not going to be snowing/icy at all in New Haven - just a lot of rain.

It’s cold-ish and dry right now.

[10 Day Weather Forecast for New Haven - weather.com](http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/New+Haven+CT+USCT0135:1:US)

I’m hoping my son’s’ flights come in safely on Wednesday and Thursday, and I have one traveling with his SO to her place, so he’ll be on the road Wednesday. I am terrified and just praying and hoping all goes well.

Can’t this cr*ppy weather wait until the middle of next week when there won’t be so much planned holiday travel? I mean, really! I have a S who is supposed to be on the last flight tomorrow night from O’Hare in Chicago into NY, where the weather is supposed to be horrendous, replete with heavy rain and wind. Darn those classes which end just before 5 p.m. :frowning: I just have this vision of him spending days in the airport at O’Hare trying to find a seat on a plane…his brother is supposed to be taking public transportation up from the Philadelphia area to NY on Wednesday morning. Do trains float?? ;)

CT person here. Unless the national weather service has it wrong (and that certainky is possible), it is supposed to be in the 50’s in CT on Wednesday…with lots of rain! I sure hope, the temps don’t plummet and that turns into snow!

H & I are driving 180 miles wednesday, and D & her BF are driving 260 miles Thursday morning to meet up with us.
I think the roads are supposed to be clear, but D/bf are driving in the morning instead of at night, just in case.

Expected temps in Portland are 52-55F.

Son-in-law and oldest D are flying from Chapel Hill to Boston on Wednesday–I sure hope the storm won’t be a problem because they have to drive from Boston to Hyannis and then catch a ferry to Nantucket. High winds have been a problem and ferries were all cancelled a few days ago.

Thanksgiving? My daughter couldn’t get out of our neighborhood this morning to go to school. She called me, stuck, trying to go up a hill in her new (used) car, which is a manual…we traded and I drove hers to work so she could have my AWD. I already have an appointment to get snow tires put on tomorrow. :)

College-age son has already traveled as far as Chicago for a conference and will come up to WI on the bus Wednesday. We will be here for Thanksgiving #1 and then go up to MN on Friday for Thanksgiving #2. It looks like the roads will be clear so we should be OK.

Be safe, everyone!

DS & SO will be leaving Pittsburgh late tomorrow night and traveling to OH, worried about their weather, we are only expecting 1- 2". Hoping that it is not as bad as they are saying.

Glad to know I am not the only one annoyed by the weather and worrying!! :)

I hope they listen to your advice. That drive is going to be bad on Wednesday.

I had plans to drive down to the Rochester area on Wednesday to spend a couple of days with my parents for Thanksgiving. I don’t think I’m going to make it. There is a winter storm warning for 1 pm Tuesday through til 1 am Thursday from Rochester through to Erie, PA. Heavy snow - 8-14 inches of accumulation - and strong winds. Low visibility. Very bad timing, mother nature.
