At this time in my life, whatever bag/purse/pack has to be as light as possible. I hate getting shoulder pain due to lugging heavy bags.
I like purses. I carry shoulder bags exclusively. (I dont āwearā a purse, I carry it.) I used to be a serial purse carrier. Iād carry one for a long time, then give it away, usually to my friend Meg. These days, though, I tend to keep them and use them again. I like Dooney & Bourke (my mother always said Dooney & Booney) but their bags are usually too small or suitcase size. Very few Goldilocks sizes. Recently I got a Sak Sequoia which I was afraid would be too big but turned out to be just right.
When I just have my phone, it has 3 credit cards, my Costco Visa & my other card that gives me 2% back on everything plus my nonprofit CCard.
I find it handy to have my purse so I can also have masks and my handicapped placard. It also holds my insurance card, DLicense, Medicare card and spare battery & charging cord.
Are we mentioning brands?
I have a lovely LV shoulder bag that I received as a very generous gift, but Iām picky about where and when I carry it (Is it supposed to rain out? Will I have to put it on the floor where I am going?) I donāt bring it on vacations. It will likely be the only very high-end bag that I ever own because the prices of these bags are crazy.
Most days I have a well-loved Hobo brand wristlet that fits almost everything I need. My phone wonāt fit because of the case, so I usually carry that in a pocket if Iām just running errands.
I hate digging around in a big slouchy bag, so any purse that carry is going to be structured or small enough that I can find things easily. This is why I love my wristlet.
For Christmas I asked for, and received, a leather crossbody/belt bag that looks more refined than the Lululemon-type nylon belt bags. Itās a Clare V bag. Not cheap, I would say mid-priced. They had a Black Friday discount.
In the past Iāve had the usual suspects, Coach, Kate Spade & Dooney. IMO the quality of the Coach & Kate Spade brand severely diminished with the arrival of the āoutletsā for those brands. I have some old school Coach bags that are the thicker, higher quality leather that I still use from time to time.
I have multiple ānice/$100+ā wallets, but this is what I use the most. It fits easily in my pickleball bag, or the pouch on the back of my bicycle. It has my insurance card, license, a couple of credit cards, my car key, and some cash.
I donāt like it when people put their purses on my table or other surfaces I eat on, but I rarely say anything to people. Many people seem to put their bags on the ground when they are outside, on the floor of the car where other people put their feet, sometimes even on the floor of a bathroom stall. Then you put it on a table people eat off of - yuck! Just my little personal issueā¦
I bought a Prada nylon messenger bag when I was in Rome 2 years ago. I let it sit in my closet for a year before I started using it. It goes right over my shoulder. Itās not too big, but big enough for wallet, phone, keys, sanitizer, etc. It leaves my hands free to hold GDs hand and carrying other stuff. It has been pretty good in the rain.
I have other bags that I havenāt used in a while, I am thinking about bringing them out again.
The style this year seems a bit retro, suede seems to be making a come back.
My girls have been raiding my closet a bit for bags. D2 just took my LV carry on bag. Itās too big/heavy for me to carry now. I am trying to save some for my granddaughters. GD1 seems to like my bags quite a bit. When she goes out with me, she insists on carrying a bag.
Most of you on CC (old timer) know I love bags. I view it as part of my wardrobe.
My niece has a Prada nylon bag and I love it! So light and chic.
As Iāve aged, my priorities are for bags that are light on my shoulders and are crossbody.
Iām mostly carrying MZ Wallace bags. They are lightweight and comfortable to carry.
They come with pouches also to put all the stuff in and make switching bags easy.
I really like my Longchamps totes, and especially when I travel (which isnāt all that often).
For ease, when I travel, I have a few small baggallini bags that hold everything I need.
There are a few really nice bags I have seen that I would love to own, but I havenāt bought oneā¦yet. And really at this point, I want nice but functional.
I have to admit to having too many purses and not using them nearly enough. Now that we live in a more urban environment, I usually just have my phone w/Apple Pay in my pocket and thatās it.
When I travel, I usually have my Kate Spade pebbled leather tote and a small Baggalinni with all the theft prevention stuff.
My favorite dress purses are vintage bags that Iāve inherited. My MILās quilted Channel purse is the summer dress go to and I have a silver Coach for the winter. (Lots and lots of others but those are the favs).
I used to switch out my purses every few months, most were the typical Coach/Kate Spade/Dooney mid- to large tote style bags with a few nicer bags mixed in that were gifts over the years. The past few years Iāve been using a small Chloe crossbody purse. Its just big enough for a phone, small wallet, keys, lip gloss and maybe a protein bar or sunglasses.
My better half and I were shopping Sunday and picked her up a Brighton Bag. New to the brand. Sales associate was very helpful in finding DW the right sized bag.
I love the idea of saving bags to pass on sort of as an heirloom of sorts to a grandchild!
Highly recommend these little PU leather pouches for purse organization- they are under $6 right now for 3! I use all three in my purse: one for all my gift/rewards/library cards, one for beauty items like lip products, mini hand cream, small pill tin and one that holds jump drive, glasses chain, other little things that get lost in the bottom of a purse
No zip top - soft and can be wiped clean
I still have some of my old purses (all well under $100) in a box in the basement. About 10 years ago I switched to a small canvas travel purse, more like a big wallet.
In retirement I have clothing with good pockets, so I usually just go out with a small neck wallet under my clothes (or in a pocket). Or just my cellphone, which has ApplePay and an app with my driverās license. I do have some stuff that stays in the carā¦. cards (library, Samās, Costco), sunglasses, tissues, an emergency $10 bill.
Last year I asked for and received this bag for Christmas and I love it! I use a smaller cross body bag for everyday but use this if I want to be more dressy or be able to fit more in my bag.
Itās a great size, big enough to hold my glasses, keys, wallet and phone and small enough to fit easily at my side at a concert.
Itās very nicely made and well organized. It was a splurge for me, wouldnāt usually spend that much.
I love this one which I just started using a few months ago
perfect size - fits everything although it is small - I wear it crossbody - was great for traveling also (keeping phone in separate compartment for safety)
I recently got this crossbody
Made locally here in Seattle. It just fits everything I like to carry for a day long trip.
When Iām back in Texas itās my faithful old Dooney and Burke hobo bag. Which has the drawback of being easy to carry unzipped, so that when I toss it into the back seat everything comes tumbling out.
