The "Bag A Week" Club

Donated a big box of craft supplies today. Now that the kids are grown I don’t need this stuff.

I joined a few yard sale Facebook groups in my area to both scout out stuff for my kid moving into apartment life and to start unloading stuff myself. People post “in search of” requests and I’ve been able to sell a few things like old sporting equipment of the kids. I’m going to work this week on taking some photos of things and putting some stuff up for sale there and on craigslist.

Extra large bag to be dropped off tomorrow.

I wore something yesterday that I hadn’t worn in over a year. It was horrible and is going in the Goodwill bag.

I just discovered this thread. Last night I was going through my under the eaves space (no attic) trying to find a picture of me and Hillary Clinton from 20 years ago (took about 15 minutes of digging) when I realized I have not one but two childhood comforters of my D’s that no longer fit on any bed, throw pillows from two old couches, a bag of stuffed animals I thought we got rid of a decade ago and lots more. I’m hoping this thread inspires me to divest myself of a lot of unused stuff.

I did find a box of D’s childhood books. That’s a keeper, though.

D is home for the weekend and surprised me by cleaning out her room. Two bags of trash and a whole lot of clothes and books for the giveaway pile!

Now I just need to get S to do the same…

Productive day and productive week as the garage cleanup commences.

5 huge moving boxes cleared out and hauled to the dump. Made $250 on stuff sold.

Just a dent as we have a huge garage and too much accumulated crap but, hey, its a start.

Off to shower off the dust.

Feeling inspired this week. Cleaned out several cupboards in my laundry room. Today I’m tackling the cupboards with the old VHS tapes.ill keep some of the kids favorites. We still have one workable VHS machine. We also have old cassettes of music and books on tape. I’m not sure if they should just go in the garbage.
What are others doing with VHS and cassette tapes?

@mom60 I was surprised but I actually had success selling the VHS tapes as a lot. Disney, Pixar, children’s movies from the latter 1990s, early 2000s. Made a small amount of cash and happy they were going to someone who would use them.

I took our entire VHS collection of animated Disney movies to Goodwill. We still have some on DVD.

@doschicos - I mentioned to my younger D what I was doing. She told me there is a market for old Disney VHD tapes if they have a Diamond on the spine.
I also found a lot of old games for the first XBox console. I need to consult my S and see if they are of any use.
The funny thing is that when we built our house in 1998 we had built in pull outs made for a cabinet in our family room to specifically hold VHS tapes.
I also found a printed up note to my kids. “No TV or computer during school week. Mon-Thursday. Play a game with Mom or Dad. Read a book.”

@mom60 Yeah, there seem to be some hoopla based on an article or two about “black diamond” Disney VHS tapes but none of mine were those. I think it’s just a “craze” since, if you look at eBay, there are a lot of expensive listings but not actual sales.

Check eBay prices on things you have like the xbox games. It’ll give you an indication if they are of any worth.

That note sounds like a keeper.

I put the VHS tapes that the kids loved back in the cabinet for now. Maybe one day I’ll have a few grandkids who will watch them. I have 2 bags I’m going to drop off at the thrift store of tapes I didn’t think worth keeping. I don’t have the patience to sell on EBay.
i put the Xbox games in a box I’ve set aside for my S to look through.
Next week I’m going to hit the game and art supply cupboards.

I just sold mine through a neighborhood online “yard sale”. Very easy and I had multiple people wanting to buy. We meet up at the local grocery store. Took 10 minutes. Easy peasy. eBay is a hassle to ship, etc.

Sounds like you have space for the VHS anyway but my rationale was any grandkids are off in the future and its ease to stream any we want to see, so easy way to declutter by getting rid of them.

If you meet up to sell something, the local sheriff’s office here recommends that you do it in their parking lot-it discourages people who are intent on ripping you off.

Scheduled a pick up for the stuff D cleared out. I also went through some of my own clothes and added several items to the give away bags.
Pick up is on Tuesday.

Project Clean Out Garage/Basement of 18 years of accumulation continued this week. Several bags of things ready for donations. Sold a few items and made $140 bucks this week. 2 station wagon loads of crap to the transfer station. I’m getting more ruthless.

^doschicos - in this context ruthless is good

Yes, a very good thing @FallGirl. The more I clean the less sentimental I am getting. I’m still probably hanging on to things I shouldn’t but I figure as I do more, I can always make another sweep through and by then I’ll probably get rid of everything.

Just curious - what do you guys do with things like vases? If I’ve lived in my house ten years and haven’t used them, is it time to let them go? (Actually, the reason we don’t use them is our cat thinks it’s great fun to knock them over. She’s a Bengal and loves high places, so we’ve had to adjust. And my H used to get me flowers fairly often). What about the family valuables, I mean junk. (H has lots of “special” things from his parents. I certainly can’t force him to throw that stuff out or donate it). Not that I mean to diss my H. I have my stuff issues too.
