OMG. That reminds me we have a foosball table in the basement.
Here is one thing we have found while we have been downsizing. Metal objects will get picked up if left by the road. We left a Nordic track machine and two stationary bikes and an assortment of metal objects. People come by looking for scrap metal. We put it out last night and it was gone by 7 am this morning.
I am trying everything to avoid sending things to the landfill.
I ready to join back up. We have done a decent job but I realize we still have more to purge. My girls have done a good job but really need to do a few more rounds. It was nice last weekend at a family event to see my 20 yr old niece in a dress that my oldest purged a few months back.
H swept out the garage of dog hair this weekend and decided to get rid of a long piece of old carpet. We still use our camping equipment but we have some old stuff that needs to go.
One issue I have is I donāt have a lot of bags to put the stuff in. We have totally switched to BYO bags for almost all our shopping. No longer do I have a stash of bags above my fridge.
When I bring stuff to goodwill I have a lot of plastic bins (the big kinds that hold holiday stuff) that I fill up, put in the back of the car, then when I get to goodwill I ask them to bring out a rolling bin, and I just dump all the stuff in their rolling bin.
I also use the bins for donating books to the library (they have a used bookstore that they sell books out of to raise funds for the community).
I do, however, also have a costco-sized box of tall trash bags when the bins are full and I havenāt made a run yet. Younger D and I filled up FOUR bags full of clothing that didnāt fit her anymore (sheās getting so tall!). Sometimes you just need to have the bags there with you to facilitate getting the stuff out of the house.
@VeryHappy, no worries. I did keep special occasion pieces, and as with you, that includes pumps I only wear to work or fancy nights out. But since I have fewer and fewer āoccasions,ā especially in the winter (summer weddings donāt count), the number of said special pieces has been limited over the years. I donāt know if thatās totally a good thing⦠thereās something about dressing up thatās energizing and youthful.
I put my old freezer out days before pick up, with the door taken off, and someone took it.
When I replaced my windows with hurricane glass, the workmen were happy to take the very heavy shutters as the tip. the owner said they would get far more money for them than a tip. Saved me a lot of time
I love putting things out. Once I put out my sonās childhood twin bed and just at that moment, a man drove down the alley and stopped. He confirmed that the bed was free for taking - and then pointed out a smiling 4 year old in his car whose bed this was going to be. Made my day
You are all doing so well. I need to get back to it.
We have Monday trash pick-up. If we put a large item out Sunday night itās almost always gone before the trash truck comes through mid-morning. There are guys in pick-up trucks cruising through most Monday mornings. Itās easier than hauling that exercise equipment/unloved furniture/etc to the Goodwill.
I just realized that a lot of the stuff in my basement is not loved and should leave the premises.
I love towards the end of a dead end street, in a neighborhood with only one way in and one way out. So if I leave something on the curb, itās not going to go far.
We used to get a dumpster on our street a couple times a year, but it hasnāt benn there for a coup,e of years.
Iām not giving up though⦠Just doing a bag or so a week.
We live in a cul-de-sac, so no through traffic. Iām not hopeful that anything left at the curb would be picked up either.
Yeah, if I left things by the street theyād be there forever and Iād piss off my neighbors.
Thatās great that some of you have that option and that your items find new homes or, in the case of metal, get repurposed.
I feel good reading this clean up thread. After her finals dd got rid of 4 years of school paperwork she no longer needed. Love empty shelves. Now she has a place for her winter clothes once we finally get some summer weather. Iām happy that she is neat and organized.
Spent all morning doing the semi-annual closet switcheroo. Filled two garbage bags with winter stuff I never wore this year and had been holding onto for too long. Iāll have another bag of summer stuff that I donāt want to hang back in the closet so this is a productive exercise. Plus, I love being surprised when I pull old friends that āspark joyā out of the storage bins. I was fairly ruthless last year, so Iām finally getting my closet down to items I really like to wear. Itās been so much easier getting ready for work now.
Last year, I gave away a bed. I advertised it on Craigslist and had several responses within an hour or two. The first person who responded was a woman with a friend who had just found an apartment after being homeless. The friend came with her nephew that night, got the bed, strapped the mattress to the top of their car, and got much of the frame (disassembled) into the car. THe next day, I drove over to the apartment with the rest of the frame. Best rehoming Iāve ever done.
Roses red,
When I was leaving MA for FL, I didnāt wish to being my heavy cherry ding set, kitchen table, and other furniture pieces. My friendās sister had just left an abusive husband and moving into an unfurnished apartment. The timing was perfect. My male friend and his brothers came with a truck, and took my stuff for their sister. Blankets, sweaters, extra coats, all could benefit this woman. Win/win.
^ There are always people who need what we no longer do. One more reason for not keeping it.
I cleaned and organized out my medicine cabinet this morning.
Just loaded up DHās car with 2 bikes and a bunch of baseball bats. Heās on his way to Goodwill. Iām seeing parts of the garage I havenāt seen in years.
Yippeeādonating our perfectly good (but SLOW) 10 year old desktop PC to our friend who is a school teacher to possibly use as a print server. H finally bought me a new, much faster computer. Win/win! =D>
