I’m just beginning the garage. It’s going to be a Looonnnggg project. So much crap in there collected for more than a decade. Yikes!
I’d like to come on this thread (which I started, go figure) and report a husband who is getting back in the garage sale habit - I knew things were bad when I saw an email from a neighbor with a round up of the local garage sales - PLEASE, I don’t care if you are going to sell it on eBay - nothing in, if nothing is going OUT!!!
Can you dedicated “bag a day” people come and arrest him?!!!
I have done my allocation of bags for this year tax return, many more actually than I needed. I have to wait until Jan.1, 2017. I do not have any clothes to donate anymore, it will be just books to the Public lib. from now on as I stopped shopping for clothes, do not need more than I have. I wish was not lazy and did garage sales, we have so much junk. But I forced my H. to gave up 2 big screens. My co-worker was happy to have them! I would count each as several bags as it took me much more effort convincing than packing another bag.
VH, I’ve tried googling for organizations that might accept those things, but haven’t had much luck. I couldn’t find one organization that would take all the sports stuff, and I don’t want to be driving around to various places to donate. Good idea, though.
Freecyle.org does.
In the Atlanta area, https://nolongerbound.com/ (no longer bound) They pick up, also, if you have a huge amount. Our neighborhood does two giant yard sales a year, and we have NLB come by and pick up everything that does not sell.
Check with churches and battered women’s shelters-they sometimes need toys and sports stuff.
Viet Vets even took the glider that I was not sure about one person moving.
Even H is thrilled and motivated now. Yipee!
I need to join your bag a week club. I want to join. I do. Why can’t I get started? I even brought the bags up to my room.
Put something in one!
^ I started with 3 things a day–even a pencil.
Did that for about 2 years.
Its worked for me.
I’m finding we’re limited by how much our trash can can hold each week. DH was so motivated last weekend, and the trash can was filled in no time. We had to be sure to leave enough room for our household trash.
Maybe buy an extra trash can?? I’d eliminate any obstacles as quickly as possible!
We don’t really have room for an extra can until we clear out the garage, kind of a catch-22. We’re using an extra, old trash can (not provided by our town) to hold extra trash until our weekly pickup when that trash goes into our town-provided trash can. Last week, we had alot of bulky stuff to toss, so we may not have this issue again.
Oh man am I glad this thread bubbled up on the recent discussions list, lol. It’s destiny! Fate! I need to de-clutter in a serious way. Ugh.
I had a series of deaths in my family over the last few years plus another relative who had a stroke and needed to downsize his living arrangements. Between the grieving period and the stockpiled mementos I am overrun with stuff that has just been overwhelming to sort through. A bag a week seems like such a reasonable, do-able goal.
Deep breath. I will start today! (At least one memento I don’t have to sort through is my mother’s cat, haha, she’s here to stay.
)
I was going to put it off – but I flashed on this thread, and decided to purge while taking out the summer clothes and packing up the winter stuff. Result: not just one, but two bags of stuff left my house. One big one went to Good Will, a smaller one into the dumpster. My rule was simple: with the winter stuff, if I didn’t wear it at all this year, out it goes. With the summer things it was purging the many duplicates, anything I was sick of looking at, anything I didn’t wear last summer.
And I did it very quickly, so as not to change my mind. Now the big question: what do I do with all the extra hangers?
Either get new clothes to hang on them or donate them to Goodwill. I vote for the latter!
^^^^Assuming that they’re not just crummy wire hangers.
You know, I’m not sure I agree with the “If you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it” theory. I have dressy shoes that I might wear only once ever two or so years, because I just don’t go to that many dressy events. I have two work suits that I haven’t worn in a few years, because I don’t work in an office anymore. But I’m keeping them, because I might have a meeting with a client, or I might need them for a funeral once of these days.
Sound like good progress in many homes! I lost momentum on my “item a day” habit, but still collecting stuff. Tomorrow a few bags will go outside for charity pickup. Some things are from my mom’s shelves in her basement… we had time to go through together last week.
Mom has a good tip for parting with bulky stuff of sentimental value - take a photo of it.
Yes to photos! Digital is the best for that purpose. Takes very little shelf space.
4 trash bags of shoes/boots/cleats cleaned out - 1 for trash, 1 to be donated, 1 for each kid to go through when they are home over the next month. The rest all cleaned and organized.
I filled a big black trash bag just be walking around from room to room, and through basement a garage. Cleaned one cabinet. I am really going to let some things go this summer.
His sister and BIL left today - they took the foosball table we wanted to get rid of with them.
