The "Bag A Week" Club

Have been joining the “bag a week” thread lately at work. Moving to a new location in the next month or so after basically 17 years at the current one. When there was no move there was no real reason to get rid of things - I mean, WHAT IF I NEED THIS? But now, I’ll have more limited space - and lots of NEEDED stuff to fit in that limited space. I’ve been trying to find 30 minutes a day to purge.

Donated several bags/boxes of cleats, balls, and other sporting good items and apparel today for a community center helping low income families. Win/win!

sold a piece of exercise equipment! $100. It was worth more but I am sitting here with a
crisp bill.
I have notice on the NextDoor site how many things that we have had picked up for donation
have sold in this neighborhood. I see how we could have sold a perfectly good patio table.
I usually just want things gone and quickly. But in the future will post large items and give it
a few days then discard.
I am having no luck selling two authentic 1878 Eastlake dressers.

How much are you trying to sell them for, @oregon101? If it’s something of value, might be better going to an antique dealer or auctioneer. If not, in my area, if you price them fairly low, furniture refinishers will snatch them up and turn them into something “shabby chic” although it slays me sometimes seeing them paint over lovely wood.

Y’all, I haven’t checked in lately but rest assured that I am getting rid of stuff. My biggest success: Tomorrow, a nonprofit that rehomes furniture to needy families is coming to pick up the monstrosity of an entertainment center that dh brought to this marriage 30 years ago. So you can imagine what I’m talking about … huge, wooden, mirrored doors AND one of those huge wine racks that suspends between the two towers, which we’ve never used. I can’t believe how this behemoth has ruled our lives. It’s so big that it only fits well on one wall in the living room so we’ve always had to set the room around it. I couldn’t believe it a few weeks ago when dh said that we could get rid of it. Seriously, when it’s leaving the house I may cry tears of happiness. I am determined to have a grown-up, sophisticated living room before I die!

Our “adopted” young family is taking the folding chairs and bench cushions that are still sitting in our garage since the kiddos’ sports meets days! The parents are coaches and have hopes that their kid will be active in sports, too. Plus, they can use the chairs on their patio!

Got rid of a pile of scrapbooking supplies, too.

Spent two days at my relative’s house that I’ve finally elevated from hoarder condition (every room and halls waist high with stuff) to cluttered. 24 bags of garbage and 6 more to donate. Retrieved and packed up 6 boxes of family personal items/papers. Can now see the entire floor in three more rooms. Feeling hopeful.

You’re a saint, @psychmomma! Kudos to you.

One bag from bathroom cabinets - all those bad decisions in the beauty and grooming aisle over the last decade. Another three from the pantry! I know you don’t have to throw things out on the “best by” date, but some of those things were time machine candidates.

^ I bagged all my unwanted beauty products and took them to my daughter. She hates spending money on that stuff so win-win.

@doschicos - lol, not a saint. I’m just the one left holding the bag! (The oldest.)

@BunsenBurner …Got rid of a pile of scrapbooking supplies, too."

Ugh. A shroud of guilt enfolds me as I remember I have a ton of scrapbooking supplies for the baby book for my 19.5 year old. A shelf in an old desk. I didn’t even bother with the other two kids. My mom never managed to do a baby book for me either but I’m the youngest. Part of me thought I’d miss him so badly this year I’d finally finish it.

Lol. That was kiddo’s scrapbooking stuff! I am not a scrapbook person at all.

My husband has adopted a one in, one out mantra for his shoes, and he finally bought some cool new shoes yesterday. He spent a long time agonizing over which shoes had to go. Eventually he picked two pairs, but put them in the goodwill bucket instead of tossing them. No worries, those stinkers went in the trash the minute his back was turned, lol, and he’s none the wiser.

We also goodwilled a 7 foot tall cherry bookcase that we’d built together about 20 years ago. Had a good time reminiscing over building it, and then were happy to give it to someone else to continue its journey. What a bear to shove that thing into the back of the car and get it over there. Now we just have to do its twin-which is still filled with H’s books…

My bugaboo is still all of those dang photo albums filled with dead people that I have no idea who they are. Maybe the Mormons want them…

I thought I had finally gotten rid of the Etan Allen furniture my mother bought 51 years ago but when the Craigslist person arrived – after a two-hour drive – she didn’t like it. Damn. Back to square one.

Re: photo albums with dead people.

When our parents died, my sisters and I passed on most of the “dead people” photo albums to extended family members who were more interested in them. A couple of years ago, we ended up with scads of family photos again (long story). This year I had two family funerals and took a large envelope of photos to each. The genealogy fans were delighted to take them off my hands. I still have a bunch waiting to be re-homed, but the pile is much thinner!

The truck didn’t show to take away the entertainment center.

I find it terribly sad when I see old family photos in antique and used book stores. I’m the kind who always wants to find out what happened. So, of course, I’m the repository of many old, unlabeled photos for my family. I enjoyed talking recently with my aunt, the oldest living person on my mom’s side, who was able to identify some of the early 20th century ones. Otherwise, I would never have found out I had a relative with the first name of Gallus!

But that doesn’t mean I’ve yet had them scanned and made into a book like I keep saying I will do.

The Entertainment Center from Hell is gone!

Congrats!!!

37 pavers from yard gone today!
Odd–gave away free as yard is getting a new drainage system.
Had about 5 people say they want them then just a few and then play phone tag.
It was a lot of work to do free.

Husband just hauled an SUV load of stuff to the transfer station. Sold a few items this week and made $75.
