The "Bag A Week" Club

Just cleaned out some clothes left behind by my launched adult daughter - not sure why I had a bunch of her old socks

The Goodwill people probably think I’m a hoarder with all the donations–and I’m ready to fill my trunk again.
This time I’m actually down to the very bottom of 15 year collection of stuff.

Had a smaller bookcase of son’s books. When he came home this past weekend I had him look it over. He kept a grand total of four and I’m getting rid of the rest. I’m doing pretty good!

S & DIL arrive next Saturday, so I’ve got to get the Salvation Army pile out of his room and to their center. When D was briefly last week, she looked through an old box of trophies and said they could all go. Should I donate them so that someone could recycle them if they took off the personalized award plate or just throw them in the trash?

Where would you donate them?

We have to clear off some basement bookshelves which are being repainted. I took advantage and filled up 2 shopping bags full of books to donate.

I could add the trophies to the Salvation Army pile if they would be useful. I guess I should call them. I suspect they will end up in the landfill. My new social cause should be to promote the giving of ribbons rather than trophies for all children’s’ activities. I know the kids like to get the recognition of a trophy, but a ribbon would accomplish the same thing and save on long term junk.

The only trophy we are saving is the handcraved canoe that baby kiddo won when she was 10. The ugly shiny towers went into trash and are sadly polluting the planet. :frowning:

not long ago I threw out my husband’s little league trophies.

When S1 was about 8 or 9, he asked how he could earn money to buy used trophies at Goodwill/thrift stores. The bigger the better. He had them lined up in his room and dreamed of winning one himself. Fortunately he let those go before high school, but I just want to all to know that there really is a market for used trophies!!!

Kajon–post 2648–There is an even better market for kids who want to win a trophy!

Wow I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by my summer project of beating back the clutter but just the bag-a-day got me to do 3!!! I feel so much better just having started this!! thanks for the tips here all

I’ve seen sports teams in low income areas use recycled trophies. Just take the engraved plate off before you donate them to Goodwill.

Two guys took the two old broken lawnmowers that have been cluttering my garage and my psyche (my ex said months ago he would take them but he didn’t).

Truckfull of stuff to Goodwill.

So far, the SCOTUS strict scrutiny approach for the move works: only things that are necessary to fulfill a compelling need of the Bunsen household are moving. Like my shoes. Or. Mr’s garage toys.

@BunsenBurner we are on the rational basis standard around here. :stuck_out_tongue: The problem is I can rationalize pretty much everything.

I bought two new mattresses. I offered the one in guest room to a patient, who had no bed in her second bedroom. She was happy to get it. She was also going to take my mattress, but she had to be here by 10:00 am, when the mattress store was coming at 10:30. She couldn’t make it, but at least one mattress went to a good home.

Mr. tried to pull the rational basis argument… No go. The stuff went to the Goodwill pile.

I don’t post much anymore with both of my children out of college, but my son’s graduation last year put us in a position to finally remodel our kitchen. Demolition starts tomorrow so I have been a member of the bags a week club for the last few months. It wasn’t difficult to remove the first layer of clutter and some of the second layer has gone to make room for the displaced kitchen items. Definitely a high level of motivation when we know we will be able to move back into clean and beautiful kitchen! I needed to document our accomplishment as it’s been a lot of work.

The summer production S17 participates in runs a tag sale fundraiser. I have put together all of my kids’ old review books to donate. I noticed last year that they are snatched up immediately - I turned around to get my money and the APES book was gone… I am also donating leftover dog food and old towels to the local shelter since we had to put one of our dogs down.

H actually threw out an old guitar last week! I wanted to take a picture of it in the garbage, that’s how shocked I was.
