The "Bag A Week" Club

We are hosting a NYE party at our place… I am thinking going Italian theme. Complete with a furniture toss from the balcony at midnight. Now need to find a piece to throw out.

Just kidding. But the whole idea sounds fun.

Lol, @BunsenBurner, our HOA would never allow that. :D/

DH cleaned out his closet last week and D finally boxed up her room and bagged up her donations. Donation pick up is scheduled for next Wednesday!

The best thing we did last year was sign up for a bi-monthly donation pickup. We get a text reminder and we usually have two or more bags/boxes ready. If not, we rummage through the house for more!

Do returns count as decluttering? Three boxes sealed up and ready to go out the door.

One of my goals for 2019 is to throw or give away something every day. (On busy days, even throwing out garbage will count.)

@Rosered55 - that’s a great plan. I think I’ll steal it - decluttering my house is an overwhelming prospect and getting rid of at least one thing a day will be good for me mentally.

@rosered55 that is a good idea. I am going to try and throw one thing as well

@HouseChatte , I count returns! Two bags went back to Amazon on Saturday and a box was picked up by UPS on Friday. Our kids used four boxes that dh had left in my garage to pack up their Christmas presents to take home and suddenly our living room looks so much bigger.

Munro American made it easier for me to get back to cleaning my closet. The soles of two pairs of their shoes fell apart over the holidays. They were both three to four years old but had only been worn about a dozen times and were stored in shoe boxes with desiccant packs.

OMG trash counts as a bag??? This is so cool, I’m on my second one today!

Set a phone reminder to throw your “thing a day” out. Set it for a time you are usually home.

Well, if you’ve ever been in a house where trash is treated as a treasure that can’t be disposed of, yes, trash counts as a bag!

@abasket - great idea - I just set up daily reminders!

@rosered - so very true!

This thread inspired me and I filled a black sack and put it in the bin plus threw a few things in the kitchen trash to fill it up.

It’s a start - still going to do the one thing a day thing

I signed up for the January cure on Apartment Therapy. Day 1 is clean out one drawer. I can handle that.

We are going to redo our home office - which is more like a “lets put it in here for now” room. It’s completely empty as of yesterday with two big bags of trash removed and a trip to Goodwill done. As things go back into the new cabinetry they will be sorted and organized before being put away.

I have been cleaning things out slowly, a couple bags a day lately. I inherited some furniture a couple of years ago that’s “pretty nice,” but I’ve decided to donate most of it. When walking around to see what my kid moving out might want, I saw the future - they don’t want much of what we have. Other son is a minimalist, and step-daughter lives too far away. I will be happy to have the space back, so out it will go.

D has clued me in that Netflix has a series on decluttering featuring Marie Kondo of The Magic of Tidying Up fame. I need to check this out, but I still have an embarrassing number of Hallmark Christmas movies to clear off the DVR first

I cleaned one desk drawer yesterday. It felt pretty darn good. I’m embarrassed at how old a lot of the stuff inside was. It was fun finding random old photos. Much of the stuff was trash. The desk drawer is now useable.
Today I talked the three side desk drawers. I have a huge baggies of random coins. Not sure how they all ended up in the desk. I’m going to put it in my purse and treat myself to a few coffees. I must have found over 60 keys. My H answered was put them in the bottom drawer and I won’t notice them!
It was a lot of work and I still have the kitchen junk drawer to do. I also have a goal this month of cleaning out the food storage container cabinet.

I signed up for the apartment thing but did not achieve the first day goal of clearing out a drawer. Too much to think about after a day of work.

I did do what @abasket suggested and set a daily reminder to throw my “one item a day” out. I’m finding that really useful as it reminds me several times until I mark it as done. I have thrown away several items that I have ummed and aahed about thinking I’ll maybe use it some day (like the spinning spicerack I bought from one of the tv shopping networks many many years ago - probably more than a decade). I will certainly fill a bag a week by doing that plus it kind of focusses me without overwhelming me. (I’ve thrown away things I could probably sell or donate but my donation bags never make it beyond my husband’s den and I’d never get round to selling them). I’m trying to make my one item something that is taking space and has not been used in years - something fairly substantial - not like an old pair of socks. I have tossed in a few smaller items also (like bottles of shampoo and shower gel etc. from hotels that we might use one day but never do).

I feel like I’m beginning to get back in the swing. Thanks for the one item a day suggestion. Love it.

@swimcatsmom : Do you have a Goodwill or something similar near you? IME, donating useful things to those places makes me feel like I’m doing something good for someone, not just throwing stuff away. But if you feel it adds to your burden, then just skip it!!

For those who collect the hotel shampoos and soaps, homeless shelters are delighted to receive these items.
