I haven’t been on cc much lately but wanted to say hi and that I continue to unclutter, this time sparked by Marie Kondo. Sparked, get it?
I have gotten rid of so much looking at it as it brought me joy, I have the memories and I don’t need it going forward. We got rid of ds2’s twin bed and replaced it with a full so dh has been helpful in getting rid of his stuff in that room. He’s pretty much taken it over, which is fine with me because it contains his clutter there.
Purple Heart is doing Friday, and we will have at least 8 bags for them. My husband has actually been working on cleaning out junk from the basement during his furlough.
I had one of those stay home and stay warm weekends so I used the time to clean out two closets. I didn’t even do the entire closet just the top shelves and I got rid of two big bags of garbage. Yikes! I also moved things from one closet into the other and created some space for myself where it was needed. I was home alone so there wasn’t anyone around to question my choices and I just did it. It felt so good! I hate to spend my alone time cleaning, but that’s the only way to make progress.
Today I cleaned out my son’s room. He hasn’t lived here since several weeks after he graduated in 2016.
I threw a couple of bags away, and added to the Purple Heart pile. He said I could get rid of all the manga books, but I have to wait for him to sort through all his books. He has 2 floor to ceiling books racks of books, plus stacks on the floor, many of them hardback. He didn’t like getting books from the library, but he did love to read. I wish I liked fantasy.
Another bag of books to the gym.
I cleaned the last junk drawer in my kitchen. Most of it went into the garbage.
I also did my medicine cabinet in my bathroom and a couple of my bathroom drawers. A bag of trash filled with old nail polish, makeup and a bunch of small boxes went into the recycling.
I wear a mouth guard at night because I grind my teeth. It cost $850 the last time I had to replace it!! (After the new puppy destroyed it.) When I get up in the morning, I just pop it in my night stand drawer; then later during the day I rescue it and clean it, so it’s ready for that night. Saturday night, I couldn’t find it! I searched and searched – looked on the ground, poked around the drawer, did everything I could! I had to sleep without it and, of course, I was worried I was going to have to pay another $850.
Sunday morning, I emptied thenight stand drawer, threw out all sorts of junk, and – there it was!! It was camouflaged under all sorts of junk!!
I dropped off another bag today. I had an impulse to ditch four pairs of gym shoes that didn’t bring much joy and a bunch of mugs that were replaced in the fall with ones I love much more. I’m lucky my local drop off is only a couple miles from my house- not out of the way to drop off almost every day if I feel like it. I do a mix of purging by category and random purging.
My husband has taken upon himself to go through books he has said he “couldn’t get rid of” before, and has decided for every 1 he needs to keep, he can get rid of 2.
Now we just need to pick a place and take them there, along with the boxes I have.
Soon he’s going to say I’m not doing enough (but I am working every day).
Sorry, I’ve been posting more than normal here… I’m just so happy to be getting stuff dealt with.
My first world problem of the day… do we put MANY bags out on the front porch in hopes that Purple Heart shows up tomorrow, and take the risk of needing to bring them all back in, or do we just put out a couple and drive the rest to Goodwill sometime soon? (Weather may be bad, in addition to any other reasons truck may not show up)
^^^ I’d let hope spring and put them all out. Is it possible to stuff remaining bags, if any, in your car for a sooner-rather-than-later Goodwill trip? So they’d go from either porch to Purple Heart or porch to car?
A bag yesterday and a bag today out the door. Cleaned out a cupboard where i keep photo albums - got rid of several old photo frames - ones that had the kids school pictures in them - or even time before they were in school! Kept the photos, dumped the frames. Old cheap brass photo frames galore!
They were predicting a major storm for us this weekend that never really happened. Not complaining, but it was one of those things that kept me home while they revised their predictions. I did my usual cleaning then moved on to some “angry” cleaning which resulted in some aggressive cleaning out of space. It felt good to dispose of a few things I’ve been on the fence about.
I also decided to make a project out of cleaning out the spare room which is unfortunately where I sleep. DH snores to the point where it is impossible to sleep in the same room. For much too long, I’ve been in the spare room with a bed, dresser, TV and lots of boxes and misc. junk. Not anymore!
^^^ @tiredalready that is a fantastic idea. I can relate to the H snoring. If he goes to bed before me I’m sunk - can’t fall asleep with that train! You deserve a calming uncluttered sleep space. Let us know how it goes!
DH has severe sleep apnea and used to wake me up constantly. He’d stop breathing for 10-15 seconds and then start gasping. I had to wait til he was in REM to come to bed or conk out in my sewing room (formerly S1’s room). He now uses a CPAP, which has helped immeasurably. Bless him – I could never sleep with that thing on my face.
I need to do some serious culling in our room. Too many clothes that don’t fit, but I am too upset to get rid of the stuff I worked so hard to get into. If we’re ever going to fix our MBA, though, I have to get the bedroom cleaned out. While we aren’t hoarders, we both squirrel things away in case we need it. Comes from growing up without much.
Well, I only put out enough bags to be picked up as would fit on our porch without getting wet. They did come though, so several gone. We had a tall stack of wooden wine cases that my husband decided to throw out with the trash, and they did take them. I have been sort of unmotivated this weekend, but we are making nice progress, slowly but surely. My husband is still furloughed, so he said he will make a donation run this week.
@1214mom: I’m sorry your husband is furloughed. I believe you said you work also and that you’re doing OK. I guess the bright side is that he can declutter during this time.
Not a very bright side in the overall scheme of things.
Thanks @VeryHappy. We are fine, and he will get paid eventually. We are more worried about the young career people who truly can’t afford to do without salaries. I know at least one post-doc who works for him needs to take out a loan to pay his bills. And contractors will likely not get paid for the time they are off.
