Ever since our move and disposal of the Shed-o-crap (as documented somewhere in this thread), my husband has been diligently returning all leftovers from his home improvement projects to the hardware stores where they came from. In the past, these loose things would end up in a bin in the garage. Not anymore!
@Silpat I am hoping that by next spring when we put our house up for sale (we are relocating to the city where D and SIL live) H decides he does not want to move all of those clothes. The good news is that he is cleaning out a lot of his other stuff from the shed, basement workshop, and garage.
Had family text discussions on that topic today. One relative has paid $200/month for storage over many years of indecision about parents belongings. I held on to too much of my mom’s stuff, but over time I’m trying to get it out of the house. Ha, this week we are painting our bedrooms which has been an incentive to get rid of some stuff from my room AND the kiddo room where we are sleeping.
Any suggestions on what to do with the cute fox jacket I have in my closet (in great shape) from when I was 20 years old (in the 70s) I won’t ever wear it (and neither will my daughter). Don’t want to just throw it away (must be worth something to somebody - those animals died over 40 years ago!) (Post inspired by inheritance post that mentioned their mother’s fur coat).
I have seen fur coats on sale at RealReal. Not sure if they only take brand names (store brands like Neiman Marcus are fair game), but it would not hurt to inquire if they will take it.
Someone somewhere (don’t know if it was on CC) posted about a site called BuyMyFur.com. I looked at it briefly; they ask for details about your fur and buy it. Sometimes. You might try that.
ETA: They are currently not accepting any fur over 30 years old.
Found out last weekend my daughter and son-in-law are planning to move to CA next year. Them being here is literally the only thing that makes me hesitant to move (other than the overwhelming amount of stuff we need to do) so I need to get on with my declutter efforts. Just one and a half bags so far this week because I’ve been working long hours trying to get some projects done so I can leave when our granddaughter is born (current plan is to wait a week or two to give them time to get used to having a newborn - FYI were not staying with them. I have a friend who lives there who has a second house and she is letting us use it)
@VeryHappy It is indeed! I know what I want to do. Just a little overwhelmed by the process of how to get it done!! I’m pretty much on my own getting it done unfortunately as DH is barely able to walk more than a step or two due to major back issues.
I’m a procastinator too. My daughter was just recently diagnosed with ADD (looking back I can see the signs but she was so high performing it was never recognized) and is convinced I have it. I think she may be right.
Though H is reluctant to part with clothing, he has been weeding stuff out from his workshop, the attic and the shed. He tries to fill the trash can every pickup (2x/week). In addition he takes photos of items and sends them to me to post on the Buy Nothing group.
Our neighbors who recently moved were friends of ours and he saw how much they were getting rid of before they put the house on the market. The visual was helpful.
S is going through his stuff and getting rid of things (trash/donate). He is also packing up some stuff to keep for him (he won’t be in a permanent place for awhile) which we are happy to do.
Husband recently put bunch of pants in the donate pile, including some that were brand new. We are up to about 5 bags - time for a goodwill run or answering yes the next time someone calls about pickup.
I also got rid of a small bag by returning things I’d had for a couple of years to Eddie Bauer. The bag sat in a pile for quite some time, but finally I went to a place they still have that store. They no longer have the lifetime return policy, but they did let me return the things.
Well l did end up with 4 bags this week. I had only put 2 in the bin but had one half ready to go but got a bee in my bonnet this morning so before I went to work this morning I filled it and carted it out to the bin. Damn thing broke at the bottom just as I got there (it WAS heavy) so I had to rush bach into the house and grab 2 bags and fill them out there in the street. I was sweating and swearing but I beat the trash men by 5 minutes.
We have been helping friends pack up in hurry (they decided to take advantage of seller’s market, get rid of stairs before their upcoming surgeries). It reminds me that I need to get rid of stuff or at least gather like items together, box up some things.
I’ve spent the last several hours getting rid of paper. I would still be doing it, but it appears our shredder is worn out. I had to dump the paper out of the shredder twice, and I had to dump the recycle bin (envelopes, etc. that don’t need to get shredded) multiple times. Nobody but me would notice how much work I did, but it feels good.
