On this thread we only get RID of purses!!
Oh no. I am joining this thread and getting rid of purses. And other stuff. I still have 20 unpacked still sealed boxes in my house from my move 18 months ago. Its time to admit that I have a problem.
@Theaterforme : It sounds like you could donate them without ever opening them, and life would continue as usual.
One of them has my expensive jewelry hidden in it because I did not want to get it stolen while moving. It seemed like a good idea at the time! I have a serious fabric and purse problem. I am committing to this. One box a week opened and donated or put in its place PLUS one bag a week of regular donations.
I say you were smart. You now have proven no need to use the items in those boxes ⦠now you can go ahead and give away.
If it makes you feel any better, I think I still have unopened boxes and Iāve lived in this house 16 YEARS!
At the start of COVID when I was home I cleared out a fair amount. I need to get back to it, in hopes of downsizing some day. (And just feeling better living within less stuff).
When we sold House1 18-some years after we bought it, Mr. still had boxes of scientific articles and journals he never opened. And some mystery boxes labeled āelectric sā¦ā and āfor garage sale.ā Iām proud of myself for not letting Mr. move them to House2.
I went through a bunch of summer clothes. I should have pulled out more to donate, but I did manage a trash bag full.
Good Job! Inch by inch, row by row⦠thatās how to make your clutter un-grow
Agree - when I was home for several weeks at the start of COVID, I got rid of at least 4 trash cans worth of stuff a week. And we saved lots to donate too. Now Iām going to try another round.
H found out about a local place which will take used electronic items and is taking a bunch of stuff today. Iām getting rid of a box of left over wallpaper via the local Buy Nothing group.
Progress.
Yesterday our Best Buy said they take old cellphone, chargers and laptop power cords for free⦠no limit. I have a big box to bring them soon. (Monitors and TVs are $30 charge).
I took a medium sized load of clothes and shoes to a local charity. I had pulled some of the things into sonās closet where I stash things to donate during the pandemic. It felt good to get some things out of the house. I need to do more as I anticipate listing my house next spring. The charity where I took things didnāt accept clothing for over a year and I bet they are overrun now.
I took two trash sacks of clothes on Wednesday. Good thing, because my shopping for my upcoming trip to California continues to happen!
As we get ready to paint the master bedroom some decluttering started happening⦠yay.
Then I shifted some clothing on closet lower rod to make room for some shoes/slippers hubby moved from the bedroom, and yikes (no good deed goes unpunished) ⦠the rod started come out of end holders. The center brack held, but the ends kept coming out. So it was incentive to get rid of a few of the MANY tops on that rod. It was not part of my plan for the day, but it felt good. Then I tried putting small/thick rubber bands at each end of rod to hopefully discourage further āpop-outsā at weight shifts.
I am feeling more motivated again now that we are returning to normal activities. All the time I was at home, I struggled to get much organizing or de-cluttering done. Now I have less time but it almost seems like more of a deadlineāget this room cleared out before we have friends over for dinner, clear out more space downstairs before we have any overnight guests, etc. We have had family members over for dinner so it feels like life has started up again, but I let them come despite the boxes stacked up along the wall. I did actually clear out a bunch of boxes! Realized I had far more than I needed for packing things to mail or store, and some of them were not very useful sizes. I had given away some good sized ones to people seeking moving boxes but last week I recycled a bunch of smaller, less useful looking boxes. I gave away two bags of clothing last month.
@orangepurple - Iām collecting boxes right now. We plan on moving next year and a friend who recently moved gave me contact info for a foundation which collects books (all kind) so Iām getting boxes ready for that.
Trying to schedule a pickup for some stuff I have - should be easy to do but they (understandably) want to know how much they should expect to pick up. I keep nagging H to clean out his clothes and he canāt seem to ādecideā. He retired recently and I think he needs to get rid of all but about 4 of his dress shirts. He also needs to go through his polos as several are stretched out/stained/collars frayed and they need to be tossed. I have bought him new ones butā¦
Filled 4 bags today. Found my good scissors that have been missing forever today. The other day I found $200 in travelers checks which are probably around 15 years old. Need to deposit them in the bank. Hadnāt done much since my last post as work has been busy plus we took a long weekend in FL for my DILās baby shower 4 (5?) Weeks ago and went to visit my best friend at her beach house in Galveston for July 4th weekend. Both wonderful weekends. Both terrible journeys back which made me come to the conclusion the universe is trying to tell me something about getaways - donāt come back!!
Found out yesterday my daughter and her husband are seriously planning on moving to CA by next summer. I shed some tears (not in front of them) but was not really surprised and I truly think it will be a wonderful move for them. They are the only reason I have stayed in Oklahoma so now I need to get serious about making the move to FL. First thing I need to do is get rid of all the junk so need to keep motivated.
Hoping knowing she is moving and wanting to spend time with our new granddaughter (3 weeks
to go) will make my husband more willing to let me throw things out (he canāt physically help anymore but not obstructing helps!).
I wonāt be able to do this with just bags so I see another dumpster in my future.
Itās taken my H a couple of years to finally decide to part with 99% of his former work wardrobe (suits, dress shirts, way too many ties, and dress shoes.) I am cheering him on now every time he fills a bag or box.
My only frustration was that H used a big wardrobe moving box for his suits and when I took them to the nearby thrift store they refused to take them because they were on hangers. Everything had been dry cleaned and was ready for them to hang on their racks to sell, but no, they wanted them in bags. H took them to another charity shop instead.
Good luck! I think (hope) your husband will be motivated by the thought of spending time with his grandchild and willingly part with the stuff you want removed from the house. It has made a big difference for my H. He cannot get enough time with our granddaughter and is ready to live near her full time now.
H has been packing up boxes and discarding a big cart full of stuff each week. Iām surprised and happy about the amount of stuff heās willing to donate.
