The "Bag A Week" Club

On a roll. Just went through shoes (as I was putting away my flips and taking out my boots). Stuff I haven’t worn in years gone. Baby shoes I saved (why-I have no idea).

So no luck getting rid of an IKEA sofa which was like new. Charities in my area won’t take it because granddog visits. I had it out on Buy Nothing twice and multiple people who were supposed to pick it up either ghosted us or messages to let me know they had changed their minds. We don’t want to pay to have someone take it if they are just going to toss it…

Wow, times have changed! When we we’re furnishing our first apartment as a family, we got a ratty sofa dirt cheap at a charity store. The couch reeked of smoke and had dog hair on it. Eventually, I was able to air it out. Dog hair did not faze me.

Have you tried like a local women’s shelter?

@abasket that’s a great idea! The only issue is that someone would have to pick it up as we do not own a vehicle large enough.

The thrift stores/charities in our prior location were fine with some pet hair. My friend who moved to another state said it’s not like that where she is.

I figured that might be the case but that if it was in really good condition they might be willing to pick it up!

Update on Soles for Souls, which has some collection sites in town. A DSW clerk today told me that in their collecting, the worn out shoes do get sent off for recycling. (Not sure if that is true for the other smaller stores.0

I’ve been talking myself into putting a few more clothing items in the giveaway box. It feels good.

I cleared out our huge old bin of Halloween costumes. Gave a bunch away thru Buy Nothing group, tossed a bunch and the rest went to donations. No one had touched the bin in years.

Such a win/win to do the Halloween costume giveaway in this season. Good job

Wasn’t sure where to put this but since often on this thread people talk about too many books, or what to do with old books, etc. - and since I have used ideas like this in my office where I am the director of a literacy program, I thought I’d share this holiday decorating idea for those who have an excess of books - and ones that you aren’t worried about messing up the binding…

That is so cute! What is the round base?

I’m not entirely sure! Looks like a sturdy round something - like a decorated can or candle base?? Or something maybe cone shaped. Key being something heavy enough to provide some stability? I saw the pic but it didn’t offer directions!

If crafted, the base could be an empty can from Williams Sonoma mashed potato seasoning. I have saved those cans in the past for storage of small items and this looks like something else that one of those could serve.

My husband got rid of about 40 books. He also agreed to get rid of 4 jackets (they are going to a local refugee charity).

Not so lucky with my daughter, of the dozen or so college textbooks she reviewed she let me get rid of only 1!

Oh and a sound bar is getting thrown away.

Just found out that the Career and Internships center at our big research U is asking for donations of like new interview clothes in smaller sizes. I gathered a bunch of newer pencil skirts, nice pants, jackets, and tops that I don’t think will be wearing any time soon. Will swing by after my doctor’s appointment and deliver the clothes next week.

I finally dropped off a box of ancient engineering textbooks at EcoCycle today. Hubby added a few to the pile too. They may end up getting recycled, rather than being reused (my preference, but I knew it was a long shot when I tried finding takers). So be it.

Every box of items exiting the house feels good, especially if bulky and heavy.

Husband just went through a bunch of magazines and we have several bags to get rid of He is going to see if he can sell to somebody (honestly don’t care how much they give us - just want them gone)

I’d give him a deadline. If they’re not sold by X date, they’ll go in recycling.
