Bunsen - that’s a great idea about the college career center. I have a whole bunch of work stuff (not too dated) - would be great to see it used by college kids who need it (my D borrows my blazers all the time for interviews/speeches). I’ll ask around my area.
Also planning a yard sale next weekend to get stuff gone! FB market was just taking too long!
Oh it it not a problem - he has somebody he is bringing them to who said they might buy. He will take any offer and if none - they will go in the recycling.
Our library has a massive used book sale several times a year. Books sold very cheap, but a great fund-raiser because there are so many. Each branch has a bin for donation. Love it. Visit the library, and bring a bag of books to donate. Win-win.
Ours does an annual used book sale. But they also have many shelves dedicated to a permanent used book (and CD) sale. They do a wonderful job keeping it sorted, and I always take a peek when I’m at the library. It’s nice to have a few $2 books around, no due date.
Probably we’ve said this before, but do take some care re: the books you donate to library sales. Don’t make them responsible for grandmas yellowed and damp smelling books that have been stored in boxes in the basement for years!
Sometimes books just have to be trashed/recycled ( I say that as a director of a literacy program that has sorted through thousands of donated books often as described above!)
We took two large totes full of hazardous waste to our local drop off. This included under the sink kind of cleaning chemicals, pesticides hanging out in the garage, old smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and fluorescent bulbs. The process itself was wonderful - we had to make an appointment ahead of time, but we showed up five minutes early and were in and out (without even having to get out of the car) in two minutes.
Excellent! I’ve done a ton of declutter (some mine, some from my mother) the past few years. All were donations or via freebie sites, often with me doing the delivery. I don’t think we got money for any of the items. Perhaps it will happen, once sis looks through some of the possibly-valuable items.
Very productive morning. Went through the CDs and DVDs which we are keeping (we have already sold tons of them), and took them out of their cases and put them in a big cd spindle case. Filled two garbage bags with those stupid plastic cases they came in.
I haven’t been here in a while glad to see it is still active. Been a year. Started off with covid - mild case but I developed a heart condition and my diabetes went completely out of control. (Long covid we think). Got the heart issue under control with beta blockers but blood sugar was bad so doc put me on one if the TV meds that list all the awful side effects. No joke! Ended up making me extremely sick and I ended up in the ICU with dehydration, kidney injury, kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis. Scary time. Finally taking my diabetes seriously and have taken up a low carb diet which has helped with my weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar.
Anyway i finally have some energy and am trying to get my house ready to sell so we can move to Florida to be closer to our son, daughter-in-law and 15 month old granddaughter. Husband is not entirely on board but I told him I’m going and he can come or not. Our daughter and her husband moved to California so nothing keeping us here in Oklahoma. Making progress - slow but progress. The house needs a LOT of work but I have to dejunk each room first ( some of you will remember my husband is a hoarder) . Have dejunked and painted the laundry area, my sewing room (which was so full of piles of junk you could barely see the window from the door) - probably 9 bags of junk one day from that room alone), and one of the bedrooms. Have a plumber coming next week to install a new tub and shower surround in the 2nd bathroom. Started on the master bedroom dejunking today. Hope to get it dejunked and painted before we leave for FL for Christmas in mid December.
House probably needs about $35k of work to make it sellable (barely any maintenance in 30 years cause my husband hates to pay people and he is always going to do it but doesn’t). I am trying to do some basic stuff (painting) myself to save $$$ but going to pay to have much of it done. Trouble is finding someone to actually cone out is really hard. The plumber was the 3rd one I tried.
@swimcatsmom : I know it’s been an uphill battle with your husband. Good for you for putting your foot down. Sometimes it takes a health scare to make us sit up and know with certainty what we want. I’m glad you’re going for it!
Pay what you need to get the house in order. You’ll get it back when you sell.
So sorry to hear about the issues you’ve had. I’ve literally been thinking about you lately, wondering what happened to you, so I’m happy to see a report. Hopefully you can get the house in “good enough” condition to sell and move. My husband would agree if someone said I’m going to move and send him a forwarding address… then he’ll show up.
Wow - I posted some miscellaneous piano music/books a few hours ago on NextDoor and have had three replies. Was so surprised, since much of it was old classical stuff. The first person said she has two kids taking piano lessons, always looking for new music. Later I added to the pile, so I will let the 2nd person (who lives closer) check it out too
Other recent success stories on local “Helping Hands” FB page
misc Christmas doo dads …. about 5 people expressed interest
a sturdy plastic tool box from my mom, with some tools (we took some for ourselves)
to the tool box person (who missed on Christmas items), I made offer for her to come back for a wrapping paper storage box I no longer want
On a roll this week
big box via “media mail” with old cookbooks and books from my mother, sent to sister ($15 … would have been $42 regulars ground shipment)
hubby brought a big pile of old woodworking magazines and catalogs up from the basement for recycle
Alas, I keep giving away stuff but still am overloaded with other clutter. Including the majority of piano music. But hey, it’s a start.
