I’m giving my barbecue grill to D and SIL. Haven’t touched it since H died. SIL is coming over tomorrow morning and we will meet with the guys and truck he hired. They are also taking some lawn chairs, a rolling cooler, H’s old golf clubs, and a large tool cabinet. Maybe more stuff.
Small victory - replaced tv that died along with the sound bar from 2 tvs ago and DH actually took it to the county recycling center same day! Usually such items retire to the basement just in case….
My friend who I helped pack her 3 bedroom/full basement of crafts into storage last year is now buying a house in Michigan. Now she says she needs to cull out a lot of stuff in storage that we packed in a hurry before paying to move it!
I believe she’ll find the notes I put on things like “Iced tea dispenser. Never used, never will be.”
I had a crock pot for probably 15 years before I even took it out of the box. Now I use it a couple of times a year.
I am the current recipient of other people’s stuff. One of my best friends just moved back to the area, but her new place is completely different in terms of size and style than her old. She gave me two club chairs and an oversized chair. Since she knows I have one kid who needs to furnish his first post college apartment this summer, and a second who has to fill his part of a kitchen, she’s giving me anything she doesn’t want anymore - standing paper towel holder, cutlery organizer, knife block and knives, large rug, floor lamp, side table. Then my sister is upgrading furniture and sending me a recliner and sofa.
The club chairs are nicer than my regular chairs, so I may keep them. I think I will send S22 with my one not great club chair and the couch we have in our play room. I’ll keep my sister’s couch and recliner for our playroom, and the two nice club chairs to replace the not great one and to fill an empty spot.
Anyway, point being, I’ve been taking other people’s donations and while I’m happy to be outfitting my guys places for free, I want this stuff out of my house.
On my own front, I got two bags of clothes and one of shoes donated this weekend, felt good!
Somewhat related to this thread, I recently binged a Peacock mini series The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, narrated by Amy Poehler and featuring three Swedes who help Americans part with their crap (yup, Amy did not mince words there,
). Very sweet series. Even my husband watched a portion
Here is a preview.
I’d love to get DH to watch that. But that ain’t gonna happen.
On my list to watch when I re subscribe to peacock
ETA: have some more items out on BN right now. When SIL took the grill and other garage stuff last week I found more to clear out.
There’s always more.
I unearthed 2 boxes (original gift boxes) of crystal decanter and glasses (4 each set) from the depths of my corner kitchen cabinet. Both were wedding presents (39 years ago this summer; we”ve lived in 5 different houses since then); neither has been used. I have several other glass pitchers that were wedding presents, two of which I like and have used a good bit. Why did so many people think I was going to do so much entertaining? They’re so “not me.” I Google searched both and found many same selling for $14 - $30. Added them to the donate pile!
This morning, my husband grabbed a coffee mug out of the cupboard and half jokingly said, “The mug shelf needs some Swedish death cleaning.” I’m still doing a happy dance because it sounds like the snippets of the show he watched made an impression! ![]()

I got rid of a ton of mugs when we moved 14 years ago. A mug with a golden retriever on it because we once had a golden retriever? Don’t need it. At my local Goodwill, there are gazillion mugs for sale. I have a few mugs that match my dishes (Portmeirion Botanic Garden) but I use a Yeti for myself.
I have a mug obsession - but overall they are not novelty mugs but “pretty” mugs that appeal to me. Different sizes, shapes , handle configurations. It’s part of my morning routine to pick one that fits my mood that day!
I also am not into matching mugs. I might have 2 of the same but not more. In keeping with the thread I do limit myself to 1.5 shelves of them - the .5 being a couple demitasse mugs and a few mugs that cannot go in the microwave. AND now when a new one comes home, at least one on the shelf has to go!
When I moved last year, my friend helped me and took about 20 mugs (a drop in the bucket) with her. She owns a laundromat and has a community table (take what you need). They were all Christmas mugs, my mother had an issue.
She said they were all gone in one day. Made my day as I know the ones that went to good will only have a 50% chance of making it on a shelf and out the door without breaking.
My last post about mugs here so I don’t get my hand slapped (but it IS kind of related) but our library has a shelf inside that people can bring in (donate) or take a mug (free) . It’s fun to see the variety change!
While taking a break from work (which sucks at the moment), I filled a box with stuff we haven’t touched in a year, like the pretty Christmas napkins (I always use the other ones) and condiment dishes I used once. Off they go to someone who will enjoy them.
In general I have been trying to declutter, move stuff on. But… sometimes the efforts are just to group like items / organize. As long as we do have space to keep things I like to do so.
For example, it’s rare for us to all all our mugs at one point, since we also have Corelle cups when there is a big crowd at the house. But in this house we do have a ton of kitchen storage. Do I need to keep the WSKG public tv mug from 1980s donation gift? No. And it will definitely not follow us to the next tbd place. But for now, it makes me smile…. like happened just yesterday when I pulled it from the back of the cabinet.
D1, who is a kindergarten teacher, always gets so many mugs from kids every school year. She only keeps one or two that she really likes and donates the rest. Gift cards are so much better than a “thing” for teachers.
I’ve hit the point where all I want to give to people is cash so that I’m not contributing to someone else’s clutter.
Unless someone asks me for something specific, it is all cash, all the time now.
Lately my " good stuff but don’t need things" have been sent to my husband’s office. He puts them in the break room and there are always takers. Rather it go free to whomever can use it than to Goodwill.
