The "Bag A Week" Club

Mine sits under the desk and doesn’t take up much space.

Our town has free popup recycling events every few weeks across the city. If I don’t want to wait on the free recycling event, I take it to the shredding company that serviced our previous business- they accept shredding in exchange for a donation to a charity they support.

There’s an independent store here that does shredding by the pound and will do it in your presence if you ask. And city council members sponsor annual shredding/disposal of electronics events.

Our town has drive-up shredding event (free) first Saturday of every month.

Also helpful is that each October there is a 2 week period we can reserve timeslot to drop off hard to recycle items for free:

  • Electronics (televisions, computers, monitors)
  • Mattresses
  • Appliances and scrap metal
  • Tires and bike tires
  • Fire extinguishers and toilets

Recent posts on this thread have me looking for electronic stuff I can unload at an upcoming recycling event. So far, I’ve found power cords, ethernet cables, 6 computer mice, and a keyboard. Other electronics are earbuds.

Spouse has lots of tools, especially ratchets and socket sets. Don’t know if he will part with them.

If you don’t find a recycle event, try dropping off at Best Buy.

I use the tear off top method, throw in garbage with coffee and dog poop. I can hear the garbage truck coming and put bags out then.

Took a huge bag full of used but clean pillows and some towels to an animal rescue league. They take this kind of items for their rescues animals.

Then, stop at Good Will to donate another big bag of gently used, clean mattress covers (and one brand new still in a package).

Husband has not had time to go through his electronic gadgets yet!!

I finally organized the dog treat shelf – I put different treats in different bins and cleaned the shelf of dog treat crumbs. That inspired me to look at the shelf below, where I’ve kept papers from ten years ago when I taught ESL. I got rid of a stack of paper probably two feet high that I no long use. The closet looks tidy!!

We recently had some work done on the house and in the process I’ve gotten rid of so much. Some, however, I don’t know where to send. Any ideas for wedding crystal? I’m keeping the champagne flutes but getting rid of the wine and water glasses.

I was able to donate finer things, like crystal and china, to a local rummage sale that took basically anything.

In MA, you could give to a thrift store like Savers.

I have had some luck getting rid of stuff like that on Buy Nothing. With the holidays approaching hopefully someone is hosting a party or a big dinner.

Another huge box of papers I moved here with in 2020. No local shredfest for another year so I guess I will have to go through it all, shred stuff myself with identifying numbers and dump the rest with my paper recycling.

Stuff about my mom who died in 1983: not too many living people who knew her well. What a drag it is growing old.

My mother died in January 1985. It hadn’t occurred to me that not too many living people knew her well, but @oldmom4896 you are absolutely correct.

I’ve been shredding ancient Vanguard statement, stuff from my work as executor of my dad’s estate (he died i 2014!), etc., etc. Almost done!

My mother used to weigh the paperwork she discarded/shredded, let me know about the accomplishments. I get it now.

We are in the process of putting the last of the boxes back in the house, and we got rid of games and puzzles and all kinds of things. Feels good.

This morning I returned two pairs of jeans to Costco that DH didn’t like and dropped off to Goodwill about six other pairs of size 40 jeans. DH has lost a ton of weight since one of his (numerous) cardiologists started him on a new regimen. He’s down to a size 36 now.

Went through my bathroom cabinet and found an entire bag of stuff to be thrown away. Started pulling out some holiday entertaining items which I will post on BN in the next few days.
