<p>& i just suddenly came across ur post on the indian thread.I guess i knw the girl, from ur school,u talked abt.is she in UVA ryt now? But no matter what, ppl cannot lie abt olympiads, preworlds etc,so whats the point in lying? showing some extra hours in school club work wudnt increase anyones chances, ryt? so wat do they basically lie abt? just curious…</p>

<p>Yes she is in UVA.She is not member in any of the school clubs but she claimed she participated in club activities. She also claimed participation in various community service organizations etc. </p>

<p>Most people exaggerate their credentials and adcomms know that. But blatant lies stand out like you said. Yes famous competition victories cannot be fabricated but you would be surprised to know the length people would got to create a desirable persona so that they can get admitted. </p>

<p>Blatant lie would be something like:

  1. A JAAGO UCD event participant could claim he/she is an important figure in the organization and make up stuff out of thin air.
  2. Someone participates in 10 debate contests and the best he/she did was breaking the tourneys. He/she can claim winning 10 debate tourneys.
  3. Someone plays underground football so he being creative claims he co founded a club, is the captain of the team and they have won regional level awards.
  4. Since majority isn’t that creative, they will just claim they are active members of XYZ Clubs (LOL :stuck_out_tongue: ) </p>

<p>Whatever circumstances its best to be honest. Adcomms are trained in this business and can spot such lies.</p>

<p>Well he could be legit for all we know. Plus he actually IS academically qualified and had great essays afaik so its not all lies. Admissions is a crapshoot at top colleges so we all try to plug some of our weaknesses and its nothing new. Adcomms are pretty aware of this and like you said before top contests are hard to fake; school clubs has quite less impact on admission decisions until and unless they are some earth-shattering achievements.</p>

I dont have much time for ECAs these days with all the application work I have to do+ A levels in Jan! </p>

<p>@hopeless: SATs are only one part of the whole package. Make sure your essays and everything else are all fine. Don’t lose hope :)</p>
