The Bangladeshi Thread

Hi guys! Well, I have chosen way too high profile unis … n the only thing that’s probably gonna bring me down is the ECA… it’s pretty difficult to get involved in much here … how many of sat for Subject Tests this nov?

hello guys. im a bengali too. but im from west bengal, india. nice to meet you all.

@akashdip…nice to meet u & a warm welcum!

@mayisha i sat 4 SAT 1 in nov. have u given ur SAT? wud u mind telling us ur score?

you from bangladesh guys?

i got a question here…

Yep I sat for SAT in Jan of this year … scored 2140, the math score brought me down … what are u aiming at ?

@akashdip,yes we r fron bangladesh…post your question here,will try to help u pal…:D

thanks @amyharvard. i do have some questions related to us undergrad admission. shall i ask?

@mayisha-wow, ur score is fantastic! i dont have set targets for the score…just hoping 4 the best. tell me more about u like ,r u completely done with ur A Levels? have u really started working on the applications? i hope to work on them once i get done with SAT 2 on Dec. btw, which prep books did u follow for SAT2, barrons/kaplan/princeton review?

@akashdip…dont hesitate to post ur questions.

@hopeless1: thnx but it’s not really as high as I want it to be. Yes I completed A’Levels this june; I’ve started workin on the applications for the UofCalifornia campuses (their deadlines on 30th, so it’s a bit tight). For SAT II, I only had Barron’s and the Official Guide, same as for SAT I… Barron’s is pretty good, I simply studied the practice tests until I got the theory u don’t really need much else. Um sorta floundering with the ECA & volunteer part coz um not really attached to any outside organization…what are u gonna do for that? Oh btw are u Chittagonian or Dhakaia?

@mayisha I am 4m Dhaka.yes I did a couple of volunteering work but as I have A2 coming i cant allow myself much tym. i am also involved in school clubs. thats it.dont worry much about ECA,the decision makers know that we dont get many opportunities here, so i believe they will consider that.

well, i dont knw why i am finding SAT 2 pretty difficult to handle. i am going for physics & maths2. SATs simply stressing me out! & yeah it feels gud to knw u, u seem very motivated.

That’s good to know … don’t worry much about SAT II, physics n maths 2 both have very generous curves… just keep a cool head n you can always ask me if you need any help :slight_smile: … n I had a q, do dhaka schools provide u with transcripts?

if they dont provide you with it, make one and ask them to put an official seal on it. thats just what is to be done when school provides no transcripts. and im not joking.

btw nice to meet bengalis again.

@mayisha-my school does provide transcripts. & akashdip is ryt, if they dont then u can create one & ask them to seal it so that it becomes official. just make sure u have created that in the correct format. u can even talk to ur principal about it.btw, i suppose u r applying 4 financial aid. the procedure seems too confusing. evry uni has somewat different requirements.so how r u dealing with those?

@akashdip-CC is an amazing place.it proves frndship can really go global!! :)

thnx both of u :slight_smile: … unfortunately, my school is one of those that provide no transcripts…i worked on a transcript on my own last night and I think I’ve done a pretty good job, but I can’t be sure; any chance I can show it to a professional who can critique it for me?
I am going to apply for financial aid, but that’s for later; most unis require u to submit ur financial aid apps after ur uni apps. I’m hoping to get into one of the need-based financial aid schools; I know they’re all pretty elite, but it’s worth a shot

@mayisha-sorry but i really dont knw 4m where u can seek professional help:( u might discuss this with ur seniors/teachers etc. also if anyone else is applying 4m ur school, discuss it with him/her.as long as it contains adequate & genuine info,format shudnt b a problem:)
well, i knw financial aid apps (CSS profile,etc) have to be submitted later.but i saw that some unis who require separate aid forms request them early. anyway, i think i shud double check.btw,how many US unis do u plan to apply to? also applying in canada, etc?

accha, is it a good idea to try for U.S.A after O’Levels?
cause that’s exactly what umm planning to do! but still confused! :confused:
Umm not really much confident about giving A’Levels! :confused:
so, umm thinking of trying for U.S.A right after my O’Levels!
so, is it a bad idea by chance?

Fellow Bengalis I am back.

@ akashdip: Feel free to post any time. We Bangladeshis welcome anyone since we are quite hospitable folks and also few active Bangladeshis exist in CC threads so we need to keep this thread active. Also ask any questions :)

@Mayisha: That is quite a good score. In my case, writing brought me down. Also you don’t need professional help for transcripts. I made the format of the transcript for my secondary school. If you want, then I can pm you and we can share our formats.

@LoraElora: No it is not. Reason is do you honestly think you can cope with university level coursework with just O Levels in your sleeves? Until and unless you want to attend some community college or an online university or something of that sort. Universities have certain course requirements and if you can’t meet those requirements, then don’t apply. SATs and ECAs won’t cover for incomplete academics. Plus you will be something like 15-16 years old and competing against 17-18 years old people who have had 2 years to develop their academics and extracurricular stats. If you are not something like Dr Dr Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, don’t apply with your O Levels.

@hopeless1: Its best to apply for financial aid and send materials during the same time you are doing your application. You will have to send stuff like parent’s wage statement, income tax return forms etc via DHL/ Fedex to colleges and its best to send all the paper materials together since it saves cost.

@LoraElora I don’t know…the reasons given by Darthspawnus are very much valid, but if you really want to apply, you should do it. Even if you don’t get in, the application process is very confusing and applying then may provide experience that you could rely on the next year. I do agree that it is a bad idea, but I just wanted to say that it’s not a ■■■■■■■■ one.
