The Bangladeshi Thread

@ arif: For now I am not going to reveal my SAT scores. Sorry :)

I am hoping to major in physics with probable minor in CS and visual arts in a libreal arts setting. What about you?

Hello Guys,

Nice to see a Bangladeshi Thread. About me,I am a English Medium student and now a freshman at BUET for EEE. I think of applying this year. I took my SAT II’s last year Nov and planning to take my first and only SAT this January if my parents would allow me. I am really messed up deciding my colleges, does anyone care to help me out? I may post my queries here…

@arif-gud 2 knw that :)

@welcum decibel-dont take tension, u already got into BUET!!

Congrats on getting into BUET Decibel and feel free to post here.
BUET admission is as hard as Admission to Top schools in US.

Well at least that is my opinion.

DarthSpawnus-r u still sending the colleges ur toefl score even if u r eligible 4 exemption?(@least based on the english medium criteria)

@arif-when did u receive ur IELTS rslts? that is, how many weeks after test? if i take test late dec, receive hard copy on jan, i wont b able to mail colleges my rslts in due tym!

guys,
i dont knw much about admissions. So, first of all what should we chose public or private unis? Secondly which engin. Schools other than mit, r likely 2 provide almost full aid? I really need help as i may apply 2 only 3 colleges! I knw its ridiculous.

MIT Princeton Stanford Dartmouth Rice Caltech and Cornell usually provides aid to international students planning on to study engineering but admission to any of those schools are very hard. Schools like G tech,UIUC, CMU, Berkeley, U Michigan are all top notch for engineering program but do not provide any need based financial aid for internationals. The latter examples are all public unis so if you need a lot of aid stick to private unis.

@ hopeless1: Nope. I already got exempted due to being an English Medium student and having a 700+ CR score. Sending score to a single college is like 17 USD and I cant afford that much ><

DarthSpawnus-thnx.I am completely submerged in a pool of confusion! i do meet the english medium criteria but have no idea what 2 expect in CR section.there is a huge tym constraint…test dates for toefl & ielts r just getting filled up! also, taking xm & sending scores…i am not a millionaire!
oh god, wat do i do???

@hopeless>> well dey give da results nd hard copy within 10days. luk up test dates and see if u can manage in time :)

@Darth>>> hehe, mysteriouss eh :p>>> well given ur “700+” CR score, id imagine 2200+ hahah>>> well i wanna major in aerospace/mechanical engineering, and minor in astrophysics(if dey hav it) or philosophy :)>>>
btw, how many bangladeshi students do u think apply to usa?? im talkin about dis session??

Anyone sending artworks to colleges? Do we have to submit the Arts supplement? What is to be recorded in CDs if someone only has the crave for sketching?

Well Arif I have lopsided scores …good CR and M scores and sucky W score so its not 2200+ :p

I have no clue how many Bangladeshi students apply but I don’t think the cumulative population would be more than 1000. I speculate elite colleges like Harvard and MIT receive something like around 50-100 applications every year from Bangladesh.

@ Decibel: I am planning to send an art supplement. It is only necessary if you are planning to major/minor in arts, architecture, design and urban planning. Other than that, art supplement is not required and strictly speaking supplementary. Different colleges have different requirements for the art supplement and you should check the individual college website

@DArth>> I seee>> kinda like me, my writing score sucks big-time altho ur scores shud b definitly betta dan mine :)>>> btw some colleges dnt luk at wryting scores, u wud hav a HUGE advantage at those places>> unfortunately, elite colleges luk at wryting :(… well ur guess is as gud as ne1s so ill take it as true :), i juss wanted to know how many people i wud hav to compete wid from bangladesh to get admitted haha> well its gonna take a hell of an application to beat 50-100 people>>

Not necessarily

Most people apply because they want to take a chance. Even if we assume 100 students apply to say MIT, around 60-70 will be rejected after the first read by an adcomm. The real competition would be to fight against 5-6 applicants who are the real deal ;)

I just suck at W section :frowning:

BTW are you from Chittagong?

I, however, really don’t think 100 students apply to MIT and some other elites. It may be 30-45, while 90% of the applications are rejected on first read. It really takes hell of a decision to apply there (took me two months to decide to apply, really hard to decide!) I can’t say about Harvard as many students, even, those with awful grades apply thinking a miracle would work out.

@Darth>>> i hope im not one of dose 60-70 :p>>> well yeah im from chittagong n da only reason im applying to MIT is coz a gal from Chittagong got admitted to MIT wid similar grades to me>> of course she had a chemistry olympiad, which i dnt, nd SAT scores 200 more dan me, but den i guess i cud make a strong application>>> as u sed, its a crapshoot :stuck_out_tongue:
@Decibel… Lol.>> once i received my sat scores, i took harvard off my list>> wasted $11 sending sat scores dere too haha>>> bt i just cudnt get enuf courage to continue da harvard appp>>>

Olympiads really don’t matter that much…two guys who were waitlisted this year didn’t attend any olympiad. And R u done with ur interview? BTW…SAT score send is $10.5 or $11 (I forgot)?

True that decibel

Oh and disagree on the number of applicants at top school. Last year, 7 seniors applied to Harvard from my school alone. So I speculate the total to be something around 70-100. But I agree with you that most applications are discarded into reject pile after the first read.

BTW Do you happen to know anything about those 2 waitlisted students?

they r from my A level batch & my frnds. One was from Mastermind, applied to 11 colleges may be- all waitlisted and later rejected and recently took the iba test. The other is from willes and applied to four colleges- rejected from Caltech, watld @ mit, acceptd @ duke (took a gap year & enrold @ clas of 2016) and a uni in Ger. He is now @ BUET with me as the top ranking eng.med studnt this year. He also stood 39th @ DU (pharmacy, didnt accpt). Thats all i knw abt them @ present.

Waitlisted at 11 and accepted at none. That is harsh.

Do you happen to know their stats? Its amazing to get waitlisted to MIT without any olympiads and science related competition awards.

Woahhh>> waitlisted at 11 colleges??? did he like apply to all elites??? im thinkin of changing my name to “hopeless2” :p
