Mentors[/url”>http://www.bangladeshdir.com/webs/catalog/mentors.html]Mentors

it prepares you for SAT 1 but I have not heard any institution preparing you for SAT 2, most people self study for it,as its already covered in our school and college, all you need is just practice. And I am from Bangla medium too and I can tell you that SAT subject tests have the topics that we learn on SSC in HSC,so preparing for the SAT 2 won’t be a big problem for you I think. And if you have any question feel free to ask here on this thread, everybody is really helpful.

@Rough: Hey have you decided where you will attend?

@everyone else: Good luck for next year and beyond! Any questions about the applications just send me a PM.

NP

@Lonelyboybd i’m not from BD. so your fellow ‘countrymen’ can help you better, i guess. btw welcome to cc man.
@NPcomplete why pm? you wont be coming to this thread anymore?

I will still visit this thread once a while, but some people may have questions they would rather not post openly on the forums that’s all.

NP

Okay…a couple of weird email responses.

Cornell-----------------can apply as a freshman.
UChicago-------------- as a transfer
MIT------------------- as a freshman
Duke------------------ as a transfer.

o_O?? Is my case that weird?

@NPcomplete: No I still havent decided… Its hard choosing between Vandy, Tufts and Bucknell… I will make my final decision by this week.

@LonelyBoyBD: Welcome to CC!! I have a different take on SAT prep. I have found most coaching centres almost useless. SAT is such a popular test that there are loads of resources online, that you can use for free. I personally enrolledat Saifurs, but left after a week or 2, cause I didnt get any benefit. I went to a few Mentors demo classes as well, and the story was similar. Then I self prepared for the SAT, SAT Subject Test and TOEFL. Here are some resources that you can use:

SAT: McGraw-Hill SAT Prep Book, Barron’s SAT Prep Book. ( I didnt like the official College Board book, as I thought the questions were easier that the actual SAT)

SAT Subject Test: You just cannot go wrong with Sparknotes online SAT Prep

TOEFL: Kaplan iBT toefl CD. You can find it at BCS Computer City.

Thanks a lottttttt for your support guys :)))) I also found SAT II easy (I will take Physics & Math II). But SAT I especially writing & critical reading is really a **** to me. Oh, think these two will make me suffer a lot :((( I think this is for my lack of rich vocabulary :((( Thank again for your support & suggestions guys

Please say what do you think

yes my brother also went to mentors but left after some time because he thought it was a waste of time and self studying will take you a lot far than all these course.

How are you doing in your practice tests. When will you sit for SAT? @ amyharvard

i m doing it on my own too. Hope to take it on october.

Lonelyboybd,I will give the SAT1 next year. Now I am studying for SAT2 and hope I will give 1 this year and the other two subject test next year. What about you? When will you give the SATs? By the way are you in 11 or 12 grade?

Hey Guys… Um Back :D

@ Lonelyboybd Don’t think about any coaching center for SATs. If your target is 1500-1700, then Mentors can definitely help you. But If your target is more than that, then self study is the best option.

@amyharvard Only One subject test this year! You must be kiddin!! It costs almost same If you take one subject test or 3 subjects tests in one sitting.

^you take private tuition to score 1500-1700, but dont take any to get >2200?! strange! my advice- do NOT take any private tuitions.

my vote goes to the advice to no-coaching!

personally, i dont know & haven’t heard of anyone who took private tuitions for the sat. but i do know a lot of guys who got >2200 in sat1 & perfect scores in sat2. a distant cousin of mine(a 2013-er, studying phy in cornell. i havent contacted him in over 4 years though) got perfect scores in sat1, & sat2(phy, chem, math2) as well.

@akashdip

BD students have the potential to score more than 2200 without any private tuition and if they go for any private tuition then they end up with 1500-1700. Actually I was talking about BD students, There’s nothing that makes a sense like ‘Strange’. well, I’m not sure about Indian students.

here in india, every to-be science & engineering student aspires to get into any one of the 12 IITs(Indian Institute of Technology) around india. for that they have to clear the IITJEE(Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Test). about 10000 out of the around 450000 examinees are accepted into the 12 IITs based on their rank into the entrance test. & frankly the SAT phy, chem & math subject tests stand no chance against IITJEE. for a serious IITJEE candidate, they are a child’s play. if you disagree or have any doubts, take a look at the IITJEE question papers of the previous years yourself.

I think no western applicant has really any chance against the south asian applicants. To what akashdip said, the same is true for bangladeshi applicants. Here, anyone aspiring to be in the field of engineering takes the entrance examination of BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology). Here out of 40000 applicants only 8000 applicants are allowed to sit for the test. And of that only 1000 are granted admission. Another fierce exam is that of University of Dhaka’s, here out of 54000 applicants, only 10000 are selected to study at the university. Top 60 of these 10000 students are allowed to study the only engineering course of the university (to which I am admitted now). To these admission tests, the SATs are nothing. Nothing I say, nothing!!
