Not determined by critics but determined by people in the industry itself. I have a long way to read through it, but thought it might be some fun discussion. Also interesting to see each voter’s (celebrity or creator) ballot.
Here is the premise for the rankings:
“More than 500 influential stars, showrunners and other notable names in the world of TV voted on the best series released since Jan. 1, 2000. See what they chose.
Television has defined 21st century popular culture. And with the rise of Peak TV and streaming, and the flood of film stars to the small screen, an ambitious and diverse new wave of storytellers have revolutionized the medium over the past two-plus decades.
To identify the best work of that period (as we did with books and movies), we polled hundreds of stars, showrunners, craftspeople, executives and other industry experts and asked them to vote for the 10 best series that have premiered since Jan. 1, 2000. (So don’t expect to see “The Sopranos,” which debuted in 1999.)
Among the more than 500 people who responded were stars like Elisabeth Moss, Adam Scott, Bryan Cranston, Rose Byrne, Colman Domingo and Jason Bateman, and showrunners like Damon Lindelof, Lena Dunham, Lena Waithe and Noah Hawley. We are rolling out the results every day this week — we’ll reveal No. 1 on Friday.”
I don’t watch much TV…but I binge watched The Good Wife (I forget which season) and the plane landed before I saw the end of the very last show of that season. I did watch that show at home after that. It was terrific!
Looking forward to seeing the remainder of the list if @abasket plans to share!
I’ll have to sit with it when I am not multitasking like I am now. I expect that I won’t know a lot of them, since I don’t have Netflix or Apple TV or other streaming services. I do enjoy watching tv, so I may end up finding a few shows that would be worth getting a short-term subscription for a streaming service & watching when it’s cold and miserable out.
I don’t know if it’s on the list, but for my money, and living in hotels (on the road) and watching endless SVU, L&O, and Criminal Minds episodes over and over - the best show of the 21st century and rarely on is - Without a Trace.
It’s so gripping and Anthony LaPaglia is a fantastic actor.
I doubt it’s on the list, but I enjoyed that show. I was several seasons in before I learned that Anthony LaPaglia and Poppy Montgomery are Australian given that they play the roles with an American accent.
Like others, there are many on the list I have never seen (don’t have the streaming service) and quite a few I have never heard of! Was happy to see Lost at 22 as we really enjoyed that show back in the day (except DH who was mostly annoyed because he didn’t watch and didn’t like how we would ignore him when the show was on!). Also a big Homeland fan.
Guesses for top 20? Thinking the Wire, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, Mad Men, Succession. Apparently the Sopranos is not eligible as it started in 1999. That would also leave out ER.
I am not a big tv watcher (comparatively to many other people) but I am sort of surprised how many here do not do any streaming - it’s totally fine of course but I’m just surprised!
Once they are all posted we will have to share how many we have watched and perhaps of those which would be our top 5 or whatever.
Again remember, these are not critic choices (though they give some opinions on the rankings or shows) but votes from people in the industry.
I think GoT and Succession will make the top 20.
Personally I’d have Outlander and Traitors on my own list but I doubt they will make it to this one ; )
