which of the following is the best dorm to live in (OVERALL)?
how would you rank them?
Akwe:kon, Risley, Ecology House, Holland International, Multicultural Living Learning, Hasbrouck Apts, Ujama, Alice Cook, Carl Becker, Language House, or Hans Bethe?

depends on if you’re a freshman or not…

Alice Cook/Carl Becker/Hans Bethe are the best dorms, but they are on West Campus, which is not for freshman. All of the other places you listed (besides Language House) are on North Campus and are special program houses. If you’re a freshman, the best dorms are Mews, Court, Bauer, and Kay. Donlon is the best in terms of being a social dorm.

no, not a freshman…
junior transfer
thanks

what makes Alice Cook/Carl Becker/Hans Bethe the best dorms?
special houses??

Out of all the west campus dorms, becker, cook and bethe have clean bathrooms and bigger rooms than other west campus dorms (they are newest). The other west campus dorms (gothics) can be hit or miss, the rooms can be smaller and not as…nice.

Program Houses:
Akwe:kon is the native american program house
Risley is for theater people, everyone is really nice there… it has a reputation for being a little… strange but thats drama kids for you
Ecology House… some hippies all into conservation,
Holland International… I think this is meant for international students(not sure though),
Multicultural Living Learning…??,
Hasbrouck Apts ?? ,
Ujamaa… Black program house
Language House… each floor is an immersion in a different language, and you are supposed to only speak that language

Overall, I would only recommend a program house if you are interested in that particular program. Hasbrouck might have a higher population of transfers which could be nice for meeting people in similar situations. The three west campus dorms (cook, becker, bethe) will put you with more upperclassmen and are closer to collegetown.

so you recommend the best is to get into cook, becker, bethe?
that should be my top priority? correct?

lets say hypothetically i dont get into any of them?
what should be my back up dorm? (out of all the program houses, which is the best)?

also, what are cook, becker, bethe known for?

How would you rank these? (1, 2, 3, etc.)
akwe:kon, just about music, risley, ecology house, latino living center, transfer program, hollland inter, multicultural, ujamaa?

sexy123 How would you rank these? (1, 2, 3, etc.)
akwe:kon, just about music, risley, ecology house, latino living center, transfer program, hollland inter, multicultural, ujamaa?

From most to least (for me and pro/con):
- Risley - closest to campus, but can be a hit/miss w/roommate satisfaction. plus it is the only dorm on north w/it’s own dining hall

Ujamaa - next to RPCC, but it is a program house celebrating black culture

Latino Living Center - next closest to campus, but program house celebrating latino culture

Multicultural (McCLU) - in Dickson, equally close to all other dorms, celebrates multiculturalism

Just about Music (JAM) and HILC - near appel, celebrates their namesake

akwe:kon - kinda far but closer to campus than Eco house

Transfer center - on west, have to climb libe slope everyday, but you are surrounded by other transfer students

Ecology House - very very far!! only doubles, but you can have a pet…

–

as for cook/becker/bethe, they are all new, but you are required to be on a meal plan (not true if you live anywhere else) living here, you can easily rub elbows with famous people. When I lived in ACH, I conversed&dined with Janet Reno, Bill Nye (including seeing him in his PJs, lol), Oliver Sacks, etc.

does anyone know anything about balch? (i know…not what you’re interested in…)

how do you rub elbows with famous people when you live in cook, becker, bethe? why is that? whats ACH?
arent cook,becker,bethe freshman dorms?
why hit or miss with roommate satisfaction in risely? what is risely known for?
If Ujamaa and Latino Living Center are known for celebrating black and hispanic culture, then are there a lot of blacks and hispanics in that dorm?

for latino living center and ujamaa… basically the entire dorm is latino/black respectively.

ACH=alice cook house= cook

risley is known for theater arts kids.

Cook, Bethe and Becker are NOT freshman dorms. No freshmen live there. All the program houses are a mix of all classes.

You really should check out http://campuslife.cornell.edu/sitemap.asp?area=2 for complete information.

I’ll give you the no holds barred, politically incorrect stereotypes.

Akwe:kon - Native American… enough said. It’s also on the other side of the parking lot, which is a bad thing.
Risely - Theater geeks. You’re either one of them, or you’re not.
Ecology House - Too far away on North Campus, and who gives a crap about Ecology?
Holland - International kids.
McLLU - 50 kids tucked away inside Dickson. Most people don’t even know this thing exists.
Hasbrouck - Way up on North Campus. Too damn far from classes. If you’re a transfer, you’ll probably be stuck here.
Ujamaa - Dorm for the black kids to self-segregate themselves.

Basically they all suck, and you better pray that you get into one of those slots reserved for a few transfers in Bethe/Cooke/Becker.

in cook, becker, and bethe, they have a guest suite each, where people (like those I mentioned above) will stay, intermingle with the house residents for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea time, while they are on campus. It’s pretty cool since there seems to always be someone world-reknown around.

if you dont get cooke/bethe/becker, whats your next best bet?
thanks

gothics on west aren’t bad. some suck, but others are really roomy. i would try to stay away from the program houses and hasbrouck and all that. they are exclusive and far. it’s better being in a normal dorm where you get to meet all kinds of people.

i dont see gothic as a choice for transfers…
unless its part of the language house?

is LYON HALL only for women transfers?
how is it there?

Lyons is women’s only, and it isn’t so bad. I had a friend who got a single there, and the room was about the same size as cook/becker/bethe’s. I lived in North Baker and Baker Tower (Both part of Cook) and my rooms were huge. My room at NB was around 140sqft while my room at BkT was around 160 w/23sqft closet and a non-functional fireplace. There are PLENTY of two room doubles in BkT although those are probably already filled.

If I request a single, what do you think the chances I would get one are, as a transfer student? And are all the singles on west campus? or would there be a chance I get put in the hasbrouck apartments in a single?

seuferk: About Balch:

It’s the freshman all girls dorm. It’s nothing really special or different from the other dorms. The rooms are a lot bigger than the rooms in other dorms (although some of the rooms appear smaller since housing converted some of the singles into doubles due to overenrollment). You also either get your own sink or share a sink with your next door neighbor. It’s also above the Carol Tatkon Center (a study lounge area where there’s food, several classes and other programs available to everyone). From what I’ve been told, it’s also quieter (although I’m not really sure since I lived on the 6th floor of Balch which was a lot quieter than the other floors since there were only 11 of us on our floor). It’s not too bad. And when I say it’s the all girls dorm, there are always males coming in and out so it isn’t so much of a big deal.
