The Best of Halloween - Costumes, Kids Comments, etc.

Treat or treat starts NOW here! Post your favorite moments of the night at your door. Costumes, comments, happenings, pet costumes…

Hoping the rain holds off here…my corgi/beagle is sporting a turtle outfit.

Aww, so cute ! Elliott from ET - the little boy looked just like Elliott - he had ET in a milk crate tied to a bike handlebar and was somehow attached to his waist!

I am a little bummed out…I was expecting a heavy turnout since our neighborhood is usually a destination for kids who live in the area…only a handful of them so far and they are telling me that half of our neighborhood has their lights off and not giving out candy :frowning:
And here I was worrying about the kids who come around multiple times !

We don’t get many kids. It’s almost 7 and we have had zero kids come by. I guess we will leave light on until 8 or so, just in case.

Two little guys in superhero costumes confided that they were carrying “weapons”, and when I asked why they needed weapons, they told me there was a “dragon ship” coming. So I thanked them for their service!

Favorite costume: A girl dressed as a chocolate chip coolie with a diploma stuck to it–a “smart cookie”.

But where are all the trick-or-treaters??? Only ten kids so far–I’m bummed! Is it a change in the demographics of my area, or something else? Our local Party City has been mobbed for days, and a temporary Halloween store opened up in an empty storefront and seemed to be busy, so where are all the kids who bought those costumes? I have always made up individual goodie bags with a little toy and some stickers in addition to candy, and I stupidly forgot how disappointing the turnout was last year and made 30 bags…Also went to great pains carving a fancy pumpkin. But one of the moms who was accompanying her daughter said “You always make it so nice for the kids; we never miss this house!” So that was gratifying.

We made it to 14 kids, and I think that’s it. The last batch, 11 or 12-ish, was being driven from house to house. Really? I get parents shadowing their kids by driving nearby, but chauffeuring them? I know it’s a little chilly out and our street’s houses are far enough apart to require some walking, but isn’t navigating the dark streets on foot half the fun? Maybe next year I should just Fed Ex their candy to them and save them any effort at all!

Our highlight was our 2 yr old grandson dressed as Elmo. He came to our house about 4 times. Rang the door each time and got candy. He had a blast.

The almost two year old from two doors down looked adorable as an elephant and one little girl - probably about 5 was a butterfly ballerina.

Only six kids so far. H bought way too much candy. He thought because it’s a Saturday night and not to cold out we’d have a lot more. He is always too optimistic.

My S just texted a picture of him and his gf. He’s a hunter and she’s a deer. I hope that isn’t politically incorrect. They are going to the Halloween party at the Harvard Lampoon. Should be fun.

My city did TOTing last night because of approaching storms. We had maybe 30-40 kids.

And the weather is terrible today.

I commented on the big “muscles” on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. To which a tiny Batman said, a bit in a huff, “That’s nothing. Look at MINE.” (Men!)

I am going to admit that I forgot to buy candy this week. Then I tore a muscle doing work stuff and could not tolerate the pain to drive to store today.

So, I’m afraid we are one of the houses with all lights out and hiding in the back. Its not dark yet but I made plates of cheese, crackers and fruit and hope we don’t have to go to kitchen later. We are literally hiding in the dark, I’m even scared to turn TV on.

It’s not the end of the world. We live on a street where houses are high up on lots that are further apart than other local areas. The candy to effort ratio really sucks! So we end up eating all the candy that is leftover anyways, maybe only 3 groups ever come. It was different when my D was younger.

It’s 9:30. We officially had 0 kids come by.

Wow, so sorry for the low numbers! We ended up with probably somewhere between 100 and 150. I didn’t keep count. Our time is from 6-8 and about 6:10 I swear there were 30 kids at the door! Our weather was not stellar - sprinkles the last hour or so. Many cars park in our neighborhood and walk aruond with their kids. I’m fine with that as long as the kids are good - which they were! We have a great neighborhood to go around in.

I have been especially enjoying that age group of 4th/5th/6th graders. They act like they own the street and the holiday! Full of nerve and sass, with complex costumes! They break my heart. In a few short years this delightful trick-or-treat tradition won’t be quite the same for them. Oh, they may still do it…but it won’t be the same.

There was another thread about teen trick or treaters…we didn’t even have any of those. It struck a nerve with me, back to the empty nest ups and downs. I didn’t make any jack-o-lanterns this ear either , although I was one of the houses that left my lights on and gave out candy

I just had my first two slightly older kids - maybe 6th grade or so

We live in the boonies where 1 acre is considered a small lot. The candy/acre here is not worth the effort, so all neighbors with small kids chauffeur them out to the nearby developments where one can score a bucketful of candy by walking less than a mile.

Love that candy/acre calculus! My sister lived in a similar area so we always hosted Halloween when the kids were little.

Just had our last trick-or-treaters before turning off our porch light. Still 72 degrees here! Walked around with our friends and their 3-year-old earlier. He picked up some new things during our travels. Specifically, “Jeez, Wooweez” and “a**hole”. Happy Halloween!

^LOL!

H grew pumpkins for all the neighborhood kids this year. They were thrilled when he delivered them. We usually have 30-40 kids come to our house. Tonight we had only 17. There were lots of cute costumes - a hot dog, a kid with a cardboard sign that said ‘Will Work for Candy’, and some adorable princesses.
