The Best Thing I Ate in 2015 Was...

1214…the best crabs are in September. I go to a place called Sandgates. I don’t even know where it is by car, either Charles or st Mary’s county. I’ll let you know when the big guys are out. I also catch them myself and put them in a holding tank to fatten them up. A lot of local watermen sell them in trucks on the road…or shall I say waterperson.

@eyemamom, I’m jealous. My aunt and uncle live on the bay (actually close, but not right on), but seems the fat guys have been really hard to come by. They are one of my favorite meals, that’s for sure.

A few years back, we went crabbing with an aunt and cooked and ate VERY FRESH crabs. It was amazing how delicious they were, especially with the excellent wine she served. I have never had anything as fresh! When we were on our honeymoon, the Maine lobsters were so sweet–loved it! I am glad we can’t easily get them so delicious and fresh or I’d be tempted to have nibbles, even though I’m highly allergic to crustaceans!

1214…I’ll have you over this summer for a bushel of crabs if you don’t mind a trip out to nowhere.

The Dungeness crab, not 2 hours out of the water outside our door, that a neighbor brought over on our first day at the new vacation home.

The fried trout with smoked trout at a restaurant in Portland.

Osso Buco, risotto with fresh roma tomatoes, fresh asparagus, a nice red wine, (can’t remember the name), followed by homemade limoncello and tiramisu. It was a very long, lovely dinner.

Shanghai soup dumplings at Bund Shaghai in SF.

Well, my favorite every year is the first fresh stone crabs of the season…but that’s not exclusive to 2015

It is desperately hard for me to not “like” everyone of these posts - and wish I was eating it!!!

Best of 2015:
A hunk of fresh baguette and array of cheese and olives while picnicing on the beach in the south of France overlooking the Mediterranean Sea - followed by a slice of Tarte Tropézienne.

Peking duck at Morimoto’s Pan Asian restaurant.

I am not a sweet eater in general…my sweet tooth is all but gone, even though I love to eat . That being said , I had the most amazing cookie like thing we bought at a Danish bakery when we were enroute to Sweden…I wish I took a picture of it and got the name of it. It was like a perfect edible sponge with a light and fluffy chocolate topping…not overly sweet , not so chocolatey that I wanted to take a bite and put it down. I am guessing that it had a lot of whipped egg whites

Rosemary waffle with orange peel and mascarpone; Posana’s in Asheville NC

or

my mother’s apple pie, on the porch, in front of the lake, with my cousins

Absolutely delicious doughnut peaches from the farmers market - never heard of them before last summer but I almost cried when they went out of season.

Smoked pork knee in Prague.

I have forgotten already.

Obviously, it would have been nothing that I cooked. :frowning:

@eyemamom, sounds good to me. I’ve lived here most of my life, but I have not spent much, if any, time down by where you live.

I don’t know that I’ve ever had a proper Cubano, but the ones at The Mad Taco in Waitsfield VT are so good we had three of them in one week last summer.

I ate at a few great new restaurants in 2015. The one thing that we remember most is roasted brussel sprouts in a caramel fish sauce. W loved it so much I replicated it at home and now it’s a regular staple.

Oh! And oxtail fried rice at another restaurant; I’ve since made that one at home a few times too. The best dishes are either the ones that are so awesome they’re impossible to replicate at home, or the ones I can replicate and enjoy over and over!

I had a lot of good meals in expensive restaurants in 2015, but honestly what stands out the most in my mind were the $2.75 tacos from Guisados in LA. Just simple, traditional braised meats on handmade tortillas. Yum!

Gyoza in this little dive near the train station at Ueno Park in Tokyo. They are hand made, rather large, crisp to perfection on the fried side with a hint of sesame oil. So good. No wonder there is a never ending line in front of the place.
