The Best Thing I Ate in 2015 Was...

Paella at a little side street restaurant in Barcelona. Maybe 10 tables in the whole place. We didn’t even really want to go to Barcelona, but were leaving from a cruise there. We slept through night one due to jet lag, so really only had one night. I really wanted to try paella, but it was only for two. My husband was kind enough to split it with me, even though he really would have preferred something else. The waiter very proudly told us that they made theirs fresh and since it was not frozen, it would take a bit of time. I asked what kind of meat and was told beef, chicken, rabbit and pork. I blanched at the rabbit, but we had a bit of a language barrier. I thought I’d be adventurous, but by the time he went back to the kitchen, I was having second thoughts. My husband assured me it would be just one of the meats, but since neither of us specified, I was pretty sure it was all of them, and realized I could probably request it without the rabbit. Our waiter finally came back out and when we caught his attention, asked if we could have it without rabbit. He literally ran off to try and stop the kitchen before it was too late! When he came back out, he gave us the thumbs up! It was the best thing I’ve had in several years. It just killed us that we couldn’t finish it all and couldn’t take it with us since it was so late and we were leaving in the morning. DH agreed that I had made a great choice.Hope to make it back someday. There was so much that we didn’t see, and I’d love to try that paella again!

Another one: grilled avocado at Daikaya Izakaya in D.C. I think it’s the only thing we ever ordered another serving of in the same meal.

One of the best things I ate in 2015 was freshly caught sea bass in Costa Rica.

We had a really delicious meal at Peter Chang’s in Charlottesville that included ginger mussels, crispy pork belly and stir-fry shredded smoked duck. I think I need to go out to eat tonight instead of cooking.

Oh now I remember. An amazing pasta dish and bruschetta, bread and pasta freshly made, in Sorrento. Washed down by two glasses of incredible house wine. Total price of the meal, wine and tips, for two people… less than $30. Amazing to get such good food and drink for so cheap. I usually pay far more for food that doesn’t come close.

New York Style Pizza

Everytime I have one I say “this is so good”. In n out double double protein style with grilled onions. I probably had something better but I don’t remember

I’m sure I had some wonderful things in restaurants over the year but last Saturday night, we had friends over and dh catered to a df who doesn’t eat meat and served salmon. Dh doesn’t favor it and, thus, never cooks it. He’s quite talented in the kitchen, however, and made the most delicious salmon I’ve ever had – was a blood orange, ginger, soy and who knows what else that paired beautifully with roasted broccoli, rosemary red potatoes and an apple crisp. My dh can cook! I’m still thinking about that meal!

On vacation, I had a chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick. It was really good…
