The Bragging Thread

After nearly 7 years of Residency, my daughter gave her Chief Resident Presentation yesterday. It was the first time I was able to see her in her element and I was glad that I managed to hold back tears. Her research was on a topic that involves infertility, pregnancy and postpartum challenges among women surgeons, a topic that she was very familiar with in many aspects.

And since we don’t have a ā€œmiraclesā€ thread, I am posting this here, as it was a complete fluke and nothing short of a miracle: DH and I applied for Global entry on Jan 8. We completed our interview yesterday, Jan. 17! Nine days! There had been no interview opportunities (and we needed 2) for months. Checked back several times, and nothing. And then … miraculously- poof! Appointments in our very busy airport popped up for this week!!

D21 (Duke) just got an offer for her number-one internship this summer! It is an abroad internship in her specific field, and key to her eventual phD goals. She was accepted to her 4th choice last week and was very happy with that… but this is the big one! She still has 6 other applications out there but as long as all the details line up to allow her to complete her early-summer commitments with her ongoing research with a Duke professor, she is done!

Today, the 12th graders at D24’s school provided a free luncheon to the high school teachers. Our family provided a bunch of non-perishable groceries to contribute to the mountain of nachos that were going to be served. D24 was supposed to drop them off at the front desk upon arrival to school…which she forgot about until 10:00 am today when she frantically texted me asking for advice on what to do.

ā€œMama, I can’t leave school to go to my car until my 1:00 lunch period! Could you email principal’s_name to tell her?ā€

Yes. And then I called the front office (and told kid to GO to the front office during passing period to talk to them in person about it). Front Office Lady said exactly what I knew she’d say, which was pretty much ā€œOh! That’s no problem! Just have her come up to the front and we’ll give her a pass to get the stuff out of her car and we can give her a late pass to class and I’ll email her teacher right now, too.ā€

And then Front Office Lady said, ā€œOh, we just love your daughters. We never have any problems with them and they always follow the rules. They’re really great kids. We’re really going to miss D24 when she graduates.ā€

You guys…I feel like I just got a pony for my birthday or something. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

After reading all of the stellar posts above, it’s hard to say whether this even classifies as a brag but I am happy so why not…

I got into Chapel Hill! After how rough Junior year was, a small (irrational) part of me thought I’d only be getting rejection letters this spring much less acceptance into a school like Chapel. But hey, not complaining here!

Our son just finished in the top ten of round 1 of the President’s Cup Cybersecurity Challenge

Established in response to Executive Order 13870, the President’s Cup Cybersecurity Competition is a national cyber competition aiming to identify, recognize, and reward the best cybersecurity talent in the federal executive workforce. Hosting challenges from across the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Framework, competitors will face a diverse array of challenges and will require an extensive skill set to succeed.

Two more rounds to go but, given who he’s competing against, this is quite an achievement.

That’s awesome. I’m glad he’s the type of person doing the types of things he does!

Congrats, choatie!!

Well, thanks to the very long cold the grandkids gave me, followed by covid and paxlovid, I have had no appetite, and for the last week have had that metallic taste in my mouth. So what’s the brag? I now weigh 1 lb. more than I did my senior year of HS (and that was a VERY long time ago). My latest covid test was negative so I masked up and went to a local cute clothes shop, where I had to buy size xtra small !

What a weight loss program! Enjoy the shopping. You are now in a size that’s hard to find.

Oh and I am petite too!! Doubly hard to find.

I spent a week in Chisinau a decade ago on a consulting assignment and absolutely loved it. Congrats to your son!

I’m proud and excited.

D2 and her husband are soon-to-be homeowners! They put an offer in on a 4 bedroom/3 bath house they looked at yesterday and it was accepted this evening over 4 other offers. They close in 4 weeks.

They live in a HCOL area with a very tight housing supply so desirable houses sell quickly. (This house was listed Wednesday at midnight with offers due by 6pm Friday.)

D2 and SIL have been saving for the last 5 years and have a very tidy nest egg they will be using as down payment.

Also, D2’s TV interview was broadcast this week. She appeared as an expert spokesperson about a public health issue in her state. Her public interest segment was broadcast Tuesday during the local evening news by the CBS affiliate in her city. Her minute and half (well, 1 minute and 23 seconds) is also available for streaming on the station’s website.
