Well, ds’s show went well enough, it seems. He’s been invited to participate in a writer’s round next week.
Well…my daughter in grad school just received confirmation that she can pay instate tuition for her second year. Yay!
I was afraid I would never get to post in this thread but just found out today that S got a promotion with a 25% raise! So happy for him ![]()
Told family member to lose weight (260 lbs). Through exercise and diet, lost almost 50 pounds in 5 months (from a 36 waist to a 32 inch waist–goal is a 31 inch waist by end of next month). Asked how he felt playing in his soccer league–replied that it was “like driving a new car.”
I was going through an old scrapbook and came across an essay DS wrote in the 6th grade that was published in the local paper.
The essay was incredible for a 12 year old; in fact, it would have been a pretty good college admissions essay. Damn, that kid writes well!
My kid is on an international trip. Let’s just say, there was a snag in their original flight. While sitting on the plane that wasn’t going to get three of them to a far away destination…she rebooked all three…leaving later today. She looked around the full plane of about 350 passengers and figured she should get the job done! So she did!
Now…keeping fingers crossed there are no further snags.
Had a delightful outdoor patio gourmet pizza lunch with the local-ish kid on Saturday, beat the Mother’s Day crowd. We were delighted to see her and would have been happy to pay. But she outmaneuvered hubby for the check.
D2 and her husband rode the entire White Rim Trail in UT on mountain bikes over the weekend. 100 miles of rough jeep road with plenty of elevation changes in 2 days.
The White Rim Trail circles a plateau in Utah and is above the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. The scenery is spectacular.
D sent me a lovely text thanking me for taking her on many, many outdoor adventures as she was growing up, including the White Rim Trail twice, and the backcountry of Canyonlands National Park to see Halley’s Comet in a place where there are no lights for miles and you can still see the Milky Way.
Actually this her exact text-- “Thank you mom. For driving the kids in the car all those spring breaks. Up harrowing roads with me puking in the backseat”
(I should mention D2 gets terrible motion sickness – in cars, on long bus rides, in boats and even occasionally in airplanes.)
My kid’s thesis was accepted! They’ll be graduating with both a bachelors & masters later this month!
D20 got an A on both of her Senior Capstones and graduated Summa Cum Laude. So proud of her!
Son graduated this weekend with his DVM so is now officially a Dr. He was summa cum laude and ranked 1/119! Today he is packing up to move to his small animal rotating internship in a new state. Did all the logistics himself and is learning all about adulting! Very proud of him.
My D entered a costume design contest one day before entries were due, for a new Star Wars show and the first and second prize is to go to the premiere and to have a one on one zoom with the costume designer (who chose the winning designs). She won second place with this design! She’s now designing something “Star Wars chic” to wear to the premiere this Thursday.
Congrats! So cool!
She is sooo talented
We used to say we’re biased, but the proof just keeps showing itself over and over.

Daughter graduated summa cum laude, received distinction on her two senior theses + departmental awards, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. It’s nice to see all her hard work being recognized.
Reading this made me think of something ds2 said about his new gf. Whenever I catch wind of a new someone in my sons’ lives I would ask what he likes best about her. Every time, until this one, the answer was “her intelligence.” I assume that that is true but also wonderned whether they knew that that answer would please their dad and I! lol With this new woman, ds2 said “I like that she’s creative.” Support your creatives indeed!
My kid is graduating MIT next week with a BS and a MEng, both completed in 4 years (meant to be a 4+1). This fourth year as a grad student was fully funded, MIT even paid for their health insurance. Today my kid found out they kept their perfect GPA: 5.0/5.0 both in undergrad and grad school. They didn’t even use any of their flex-pnr’s!
MIT doesn’t do Greek honors, so there’s no summa cum laude distinction, and they don’t do cords or special tassels or hoods at graduation so I have nowhere to show them off. I certainly can’t post my kid’s gpa on my social media , so I’m bragging here anonymously instead!
If someone is going to brag publicly like this, it’s probably better if they can spell the name of the college they claim to have graduated from. What do they teach at “UC Berkey”?
