The Bragging Thread

I actually slept for 8 hours without waking up in the middle of the night…

Pretty sure it’s something I can brag about :upside_down_face:

Once I thought that I had slept for 12 hours uninterrupted, but soon realized that I had forgotten to plug in my clock.

In the 32+ years that I’ve known H, he’s never really put himself out there. He’s worked the same elementary PE teacher job. He’s always been an avid lifter, but has never had any interest in competing. He’s never wanted to take any classes, etc.

However, he retired from teaching last week, but he still needed a job. A big part is due to money, but also because he can NOT stay at home and do nothing. He has always hated his summers. So what to do?

The last 6+ weeks - during his final 1-2 months of school nonetheless - he trained 20 hpw for a new job, a job that is completely new and requires a fair amount of math skills. Although basic skills, you still need to be able to do good quick mental math. H has a HUGE (and I mean huge) phobia of math. If he sees a number, he runs away. I made him some practice sheets, and his last 3 tests he got 100s. Even so, he has had a lot of ups and downs during training. I wasn’t sure if he would go through with it today, but he did and he passed his audition!

My H is now a licensed black jack/table games dealer and will begin working at a casino next week. It will only be 3-4 days a week. But he loves being around noise and people and this checks those boxes. (Sounds like hell to me! Good thing people are different!) And he has already found two new close friends. I know he will miss his school work family, so finding new friends has been wonderful. (and male ones at that! Try working with all women for 32 years, lol!) I am very proud of him for going through with it.

Wow! What a huge change! Congratulations to H!!

And if what they say is true, he might make more dealing part time than he did teaching with 32 years experience. I’m not counting on that though. He only needs to earn 30-40% of his old salary for me to be happy

Good for him! Sounds like an interesting and fun retirement job. Hope he enjoys it!

I knew a lawyer who was tired of lawyering - he became a dealer in a casino. He absolutely loved it! Good for your H for trying something new.

That’s really impressive, @ClassicMom98. Was he using the ironing board in your sunroom (dining room thread) for practice?

One of my former coworkers in Philly (a programmer) was laid off in his early 50s, but was not ready/able to retire. Became a dealer in Atlantic City. Worked 3-4 days a week, made buckets of $$ and really enjoyed it. IIRC, at some point he switched to a casino in the Phila area. Did it about ten years til he was financially set to move to FL and retire for good.

He talked about doing that for years before it actually happened. Thought it would the perfect retirement job for himself.

I knew you’d notice!! Yep! If you look closely, there are also poker chips on the table.

It’s definitely been “interesting.” Neither of us have applied for a job since 1997. And I don’t think that H has ever had a resume before. And the last few weeks, he would leave for work at 6:30am and not get home until 10pm. And then I’d stay up until he got home, get in bed around 10:30 with a 3:50am alarm. I’m too old for this.

But while the job itself is completely different, the soft skills listed on the job description are quite similar. Able to stand for long periods of time? Check. Able to adhere to a strict schedule? Check. Able to work in a loud, chaotic environment? Check. (Ever been in a gym full of screaming kids 8 hours/day x 32 years?!) Able to smile, have a positive attitude, and make customers feel welcome? Check. (Greeting 500+ kids every morning welcoming them to school?) Able to deal with potentially difficult situations? Check (like dealing with out of control children and unstable parents threatening violence? At least here he will won’t also have to double duty as security)

As long as he doesn’t break up arguments between those at his table by telling them to go outside and run laps until they can behave!

I don’t think that I’ve ever posted on this thread before, but I thought about it this evening, that’s for sure.

Instead of posting my brag on the Fitness thread, I’ll post it here instead. Seems more appropriate. Caveat: Big ego here.

A relatively new gym member, a man about my age, during today’s workout, said to me “You look like Brad Pitt from the Fight Club.”

And I clarified, we’re talking about physique only. Nothing else.
