Haha - I never spoke perfect French despite four years of French classes in high school … my teacher was born in Belgrade, and it turns out that we all spoke with a Serbian-Croatian accent. And there I was thinking that I was learning correct pronunciation!
The other day I was at the emergency room and a man was trying to figure out where he should be paying but only spoke Spanish. The security guard had no idea what he was saying or how to talk to him so I just said a few words I remembered from HS & college Spanish and the guy was very happy to know where to go (downstairs). No cashiers in the ER. Haha!
I greatly admire people who are fluent in two languages. My DIL (from Puerto Rico) is one of them.
My sister double majored in French and German, and then went on to do other things. Now sister is retired and taking language classes in French at the center here. It is just for fun.
I have a friend who is fluent in Spanish. The problem I have when we are in a restaurant, or in Mexico, is that she takes over and talks so fast that none of the rest of us has a chance of keeping up with the conversation, even if the other person is trying to help us in English.
In most countries, being able to speak more than one language is the norm, not the exception.
Well, sadly I’m not fluent but am glad I understand a little. D taught herself German so she could understand a message board about sone European singers she loves. It helped her get her language requirement to graduate from college.
@justamom, great work.
This might make things easier in your fare-change investigations.
I believe that the tripit pro app is supposed to keep rechecking your fares. Some of what we get is off target but occasionally we save real money.
I use Tripit, but haven’t tried “pro” version - I’ll look into it.
With the intent of getting back to “bragging”, which is the theme of this thread, I would like to congratulate any parents with recent university graduates, as well as any students who have graduated university in the last few weeks or are about to graduate (I expect that there are a few graduations that have not quite happened yet).
We just had a daughter graduate with her doctorate in veterinary medicine. We are quite excited. My daughter and I are still having difficulty believing that this long and difficult road is finally over. She found out this past February (I think) that she has passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam, so she is approximately all set to start her career as a veterinarian (there are a few details left such as moving and getting licensed in the state where she will be working).
Hurray!!
OK, if we are bragging about graduates I’ll mention my DIL, who last weekend graduated from law school and received a master’s in public policy and was given an award in recognition of her work for human rights. Now, on to studying for the bar!
OP here! You can brag about anything on The Bragging Thread. And most definitely, congratulating graduates works!
We will have a graduate in this family as well. From one advanced program in June, and from a different degree program in August. This student has worked very hard to get where she is, and we are very proud.
More details when the graduation dates actually happen!
We went to our DIL’s graduation from UMD last night. We are so proud of her. She is 26 and just earning her bachelor’s degree (B.S., Public Health). The details aren’t important here, but she had a long, hard road to that platform last night. Our son postponed walking for his master’s until this fall/winter so as not to detract from her achievement. We are so proud of both of them.
Congratulations to her!
Will you be attending the “generic” graduation with Kermit tomorrow?
I did the happy dance when I got ecredits a few weeks ago when one of our booked fares did this (happened to see it on just the right day!)
I love a happy customer
It’s worth it to consistently check.
or have fare trackers
I’ve never used one for flights. I used to use one for cruises, but it’s long gone.
I use Google flights. But sometimes when I get the email that the fare has dropped, it has already gone back up again, so I do sometimes check the fares periodically directly.
I’m going to brag on myself. Sort of.
Last weekend, we spent several days with my DIL’s family, including her grandmother, who is moving near and who i was meeting for the first time. Yesterday, DIL’s mom texted me: “I forgot to tell you this, but my mom asked whether you were (dh’s) second wife. I told her no, why did she ask, and she replied because you look so much younger than the rest of us!” I’m actually older than her daughter and her daughter’s dh.
I told her that I love her mom and will overlook that this 87yo woman has a touch of dementia! lol I’ll take a compliment wherever I can get it!
