The Bruce Jenner Interview

Not sure how technically correct it is, but this article helped me get a better understanding of the different terms:

I thought the program was very well done. I am humbled by his courage! No one chooses this it chooses you.
Let’s hope that his experience will contribute to a greater sense of open mindedness and compassion for all people who are conflicted or challenged with similar things.

I am now watching some of the excerpts and I’m not sure what I was expecting exactly but it is completely different… I will watch the whole thing later on. He has such clarity in the little snippets.

I saw a couple of snippets too and was pretty wowed by his charisma. I think this interview was great for his image and for the trans movement generally.

I only saw still photos of the interview. Jenner looked so much classier than Kim, Khloe, and the rest of the Kardashian clan.
<<<<

I agree…but then again, it’s not hard to look classier than that bunch. Who wants to keep up with them at anytime?

Best wishes for the future.

Nobody here is trying to keep up with them. You may not like them and think they’re classless but Kim, Rob, Bruce’s family in general, are showing a lot of support (and class) right now. We should all be so lucky.

Same here!!!

I probably lived under a big rock, because I had NO idea that Bruce was related to the Kardashian clan (at least I know what a Birkin is…). To me, he was and still is an Olympic hero, but I have not flowed his post-athletic life. (Using “he” because this is what Bruce used for now). Saw the snippets of the interview. Well done. A very admirable person!

There was a Kardashian episode where Kim was asked to pose nude for Playboy. Of course Kris was urging Kim to do it. One of the other sisters said they should vote on it, and Bruce said, “I told your Dad I would look out for you all, so I’m going to vote the way I believe your Dad would vote, and that is a resounding NO.”

That’s when I began to realize he was indeed a good man. His behavior was so often at odds with how Kris would handle things. I think he was a good balance to her personality as he was often the only voice of reason.

Bruce was married to Kris Kardashian and basically became a father figure to her daughters and son when their father Robert Kardashian (one of OJ’s attorneys) passed away from brain cancer. He and Kris also had two little girls together. He always seemed like a reluctant participant in the show and could usually be counted on to take on the “normal” point of view in any dilemma on the show. Like I said above, he usually was the voice of reason amidst all of the craziness.

I have such strong memories of Bruce Jenner from my childhood. In the early 70s, my sisters’ and my all-time-favorite movie was (a really stupid and probably racist) movie called, “The World’s Greatest Athlete.” I can remember so clearly watching the '76 Olympics (I was 11) and (maybe later?) my dad saying: “Girls, Bruce Jenner is the REAL World’s Greatest Athlete.” I was a very serious child and I took this pronouncement very seriously, as if there were a title that all the world’s leaders had agreed on.

Then the Wheaties box came and our family bought the Wheaties (which we normally never ate) because Bruce Jenner, American Hero and World’s Greatest Athlete, was on it. My dad probably said something like, “Girls, we are honoring Bruce Jenner by eating these Wheaties.” Looking back now, I realize my dad was being faux serious because of our love of the movie (and probably in parody of the whole capitalist enterprise), but at the time we took it deadly seriously. (Note: kids certainly develop a sense of irony earlier these days).

That’s who Bruce Jenner will always be for me. The REAL World’s Greatest Athlete.

And that is what he, and in the apparently soon future she, will always be.

Good It will be interesting to see how the Olympics handles this. Will Bruce be referred as she when talking about the1976 male decathlon winner? And what about male/ female statistics? Will they always have to explain that he was counted as a male but is now actually a female?

His transition, being who he is, presents interesting dilemmas.

Oh my . . . I finally pulled it up on comcast. I’m only about a minute in and already kinda needing tissue.

So I finished the interview last night and was really moved. Bruce also said that he felt like he could use the media circus for good and to make the world a better place for people with his show. I think that’s true. My D had a good friend in HS whose dad is transgender. I knew it very hush hush on the down low and it wasn’t something that was known generally. His parents were married and had him then split and briefly got back together and had a second child then split for good. I feel like the model of the Jenners and Kardashians working through this publicly could give other families a forum to discuss these kins of things and possibly rebuild relationships.

I only know the K family from the grocery store tabloid covers etc. and general modern life exposure but it does feel weird to say that they might do some good. Imagine though Kanye, as an African American man, being the first to be accepting of Jenner’s true self and precess. That is actually kind of culturally huge. They could be the “Ellen” of the transgender community in terms of acceptance and normalization of seeing people for who they are.

I think Bruce Jenner is very, very brave. And whatever I may think of the Kardashians, if they are all united and supportive of his journey, then I say good for all of them.

Nr,

I agree on all points. The writing is on the wall for Kim. How many butt pics can one person post? She doesn’t really have anything going for other than looks and as her looks fade … well, her relevance will too. You live by the sword, you die by the sword, I guess.

Her younger sisters are pretty much about to take over the world. Hopefully, they’ll let us normal people live in it. I think they already have surpassed Kim in popularity actually. At the least the runway model one. What’s a little weird is the other one (I am so sorry I can’t seem to get their names straight) is plainer looking. That adds a whole other element to her appeal I think. The one girl is just a natural, tall, leggy, pretty, the whole deal, and she isn’t chopped live but she isn’t quite that naturally gifted and I think lots of people can relate to that.

Getting back to the BJ interview, I loved the part where he went to one of his sons, the musician, because he was such a gentle soul. That part really touched me. I have two sons and one of my sons is the kind of person that everyone goes to in situations like that so that part of the interview really resonated with me. It reminded me that kids, even of the same parents, can have significant differences, yes I know that is obvious, but it still fascinates me.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek. Obviously. But the younger ones, it seems to me, hopefully this will get me off the shark, are going to be their generations Liz Taylor. I hope that makes sense. And I am not fascinated with the younger ones I don’t even know their names. I like the whole family about equally. I like BJ much more than I did a few days ago but I’ve always like him a lot.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’m temporarily closing this thread to split out all the non-Bruce Jenner related posts.

Reopening thread. I know we give a lot of leeway in the cafes, but Bruce Jenner is arguably the most famous person to reveal himself as transgender, and there are probably some teachable moments that came out of the interview. Therefore, I’d request that this thread’s discussions remain on point to the thread’s title, and any discussions about the rest of the clan can be posted here:

Thank you so much for separating the posts, skieurope.

Well, based on the comments here I think I will reverse my earlier decision and watch it!

@DonnaL Congratulations on your anniversary.
