The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@luvbloominroses there was one with just a college list and who was planning on going there. Then there is another that describes each kids story, from choosing where to apply through making final decision. These stories are interesting! I will say decisions usually come down two things: where your student feels most comfortable and cost. In our case our daughter only had 2 BFA choices and she connected to the school that was significantly cheaper (win-win LOL) Wishing everyone here the best of luck this month - stay strong while waiting for results. For us this was worst part emotionally. As my d put it - it is difficult when it is so out of your control and feels so random. BAL

@lithpool. Congratulations!! Was it an email or snail mail? Did your son complete the application after the walk-in with transcripts etc?

@luvbloominroses Is it the thread where an applicant lists programs: applied to, prescreens submitted to, accepted to, rejected from, wait-listed at, as well as coach, summer programs participated in, final program decision and then a brief explanation as to how the applicant determined best fit among the options available?

@lithpool @yellowheart
WooooooooHoooooooo!!!

Safe travels to all heading to Chicago Unifieds. We’re flying up today and starting the week off tomorrow with Roosevelt. BAL to all your kids!

@luvbloominroses, good idea! I started one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/2124537-mt-acceptances-class-of-2023-p1.html?new=1

( I don’t have a horse in the race this year, but I remember how helpful it was for our year!)

Thank you all for the congrats! And congrats to @yellowheart too!
S applied to the school after auditions at unifieds, and we received the snail mail acceptance yesterday.

Wanted to say that I have heard that the schools have had a meeting and are streamlining next years auditions to have similar requirements. I really hope that this is true:)

@mamaboyz - what schools?

@lithpool - Congrats to your son! Great News!

@toowonderful the faculty of Pace discussed this in a panel he had during on-campus auditions. He mentioned that all of the big programs (named many of them) had a meeting and were discussing ways that they could potentially streamline the requirements and make this easier for kids going forward.

@El-Cee This streamlining is not necessarily a good thing for the truly motivated applicant (or applicants with helpful parents). It will allow MANY more people to apply to these programs (increasing application revenue for schools), driving down further the acceptance percentages and thus will likely force applicants to apply to many more schools. This is what happened with the common app. So you won’t need those spreadsheets, but you will need a second mortgage. ?

@El-Cee - I am sure many parents would enjoy that… but my inner devil’s advocate makes me wonder if it will really happen. Perhaps they will create a set of “core” requirements, (assuming they could agree on what that should be) but I bet that many of them will still have something special they want. Schools like to be “unique”. It follows the same logic as the common app… it was meant to simplify, and it does, but the vast majority of schools (at least every one my kid looked at) had additional essays. One of the guidance teachers at my school is a big data fan… and actually dug up numbers, turns out our average student actually writes MORE essays now (with common app) than they did before. So maybe some schools will create an “Uptempo, Ballad, 2 Monologue” agreement - but you can BET there are still going to be schools that want a shakespeare, or a classic musical, or a rock song etc…

My S went 11/11 on prescreens - Mich, CMU, Ithaca, Otterbein, Penn State, Oklahoma, TCU, Milikin, Syracuse, Webster and Pace. He is also academically gifted- 36 ACT, tons of AP classes, 4.8 weighted GPA. With the randomness of auditions, should we read anything into his prescreen success? How many schools would pass him through prescreens at least partly because his academics were so high? Reading through this board makes me think he could honestly go 11/11 on prescreens and 0/11 on final acceptance. It seriously feels like he would have an easier time applying academically to Ivy’s than MT. Am I being paranoid on the 0/11 or is this a possibility?

I agree some schools will still ask for some unique submissions, but it would be very helpful if they could just agree on composition of the videos for prescreens - accompanist in the video or not, waist up/knees up/full body, etc. It is crazy to have to re-shoot the same songs/monologues over and over for the different schools.

@Jpkcmo - you have some very low acceptance BFA programs on that list and some slightly easier programs as well so I think you’ve covered your bases okay. Have a back-up “plan” for the event he goes 0/11 but don’t borrow trouble, he has done great so far. His academics (so impressive!) won’t help him get accepted at most BFAs because it’s all about the audition. He won’t be locked out of any programs and he’ll get merit aid at many of those schools but the actual admission decision is all about the artistic acceptance, not the academic acceptance. Has he applied to any BA programs or school where the acceptance is more about the balance of academics and audition?

@CaMom13 what do you consider the slightly easier programs? They all seem pretty competitive to me.

I hope the schools do “streamline”. Just standardizing the prescreens and agreeing on 32 bar cuts for audition songs (or something like that) would be a huge step forward. Anything to keep those spreadsheets a little less chaotic, lol. I agree that it will open up some programs to more applicants but that’s not a bad thing - the current environment where you have to pay a coach or dedicate a parent’s life to research just to understand how to apply and meet all the requirements definitely discriminates against lower-income families who don’t have the same resources to expend.

@CaMom13 - completely agree. If the goal is for the schools to identify the most talented kids, knocking down barriers to applying and auditioning would be a huge step.

@Jpkcmo
Congratulations to your son for his prescreen success and his grades. Sounds like he is set up for success somewhere. He only needs 1 yes out of 11 to have a good opportunity at any of those schools. Definitely helps to be a boy when looking at the odds. Best of luck in his auditions.
