The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

I thought everyone wanted a pre-1970 and newer piece? How did you get this far without those? LOL If he has been taking vocal lessons he has probably learned some already but ask his teacher for the best one for him. My d did not like learning classical art songs so avoided schools that wanted one - thankfully very few did!

@mamaboyz FYI it is difficult to fit many auditions in the fall - many have only one day available and they overlap, and you have to take into account travel time. To get one of those spots you HAVE to get apps in early and get signed up ASAP. You might start with schools that give early acceptances. Some make you wait until March regardless of when you audition.

@Twelfthman I think CCM is more than a rumor… they are actively looking for a replacement. I think it’s funny that we expect the people that head these programs to never retire!

@CanaDad they attend Unifieds because they find talent there and they get a crap load of money from the audition fees. If they didn’t benefit from being there they wouldn’t go. And they would have to hold on campus auditions every weekend for weeks to see everyone. They could make it much easier for parents by having a standard of material required and length of pieces. If they were reasonable they would have a nominal fee for looking at pre-screens and then charge more for the face to face. They could have speakers in the room so the kids don’t have to bring their own.

Funny about the speaker thing; my D practised with the whole Bluetooth setup/connection/volume thing, in the end 7 of her 8 auditions in Chicago had an accompanist and the other one she just plugged into theirs. Each accompanist played her songs at different tempo, one flubbed it completely and stopped playing so she just pushed on a cappella.

If I were faculty I would definitely want to see the most amount of talent in the shortest time, and not devote every one of my weekends from fall to March doing on campus auditions. I agree the fees are a lot…for us, it’s the college part we aren’t sure we can afford?

Some of the auditions filmed the candidates. I wonder what the process is, does the adjudicator do an initial “cut” in the room, and then review a selected bunch of kids with other faculty members? Seems they could do the same thing really just by looking at the prescreens again…

Good morning, everyone. So I am constantly checking these portals for any piece of news…the wait is tough. I just checked Ball State and I see that my daughter is Waitlisted. What exactly does that mean? I assume she is academically accepted and waitlisted for MT, but maybe she’s accepted into MT but waitlisted for academic acceptance!!! I have no idea the true definition of that word.

When did she audition? Has she already received her academic acceptance or did you submit it later? My D got her Ball State academic acceptance pretty early in the fall, and her stats are very average. My gut is that it’s an artistic WL.

@carriemc95 My D did a walk-in at NY Unifieds. We applied after we got home, January 25.

We have not received any other information re academic acceptance.

@BWmama From what I’ve heard from different directors, waitlists can mean different things. One thing that has been made clear by several programs is that for their waitlist it is not a ranked ordering in which you’re number x on the waitlist. For some schools the waitlist seems almost like a “paired” list - if the person who got the yes does not take the offer, then they have a similar type person on the waitlist who gets the offer. Also for some schools, I think it was Ithaca that said this, they rarely go deep into their waitlist. I think she said they typically only go 2 or 3 deep. These scenarios may be more common with the top tier programs or the programs that have very small class sizes. I imagine that other school do things differently.

Hmmmmm…I just went to look at my emails to look at dates. She applied academically 9/19 and on 10/17 received her acceptance. I hope your mystery is solved soon!

re: Aubrey Berg, it seems that CCM is actively recruiting a new program chair: https://jobs.uc.edu/job/Cincinnati-Chair-of-Musical-Theatre-and-Open-Rank-Teacher-of-Acting-OH-45201/524799700/
I would also hasten to say, though, that it’s not outside the realm of possibility for open positions like this one (and similar ones at other institutions) to be filled internally with existing faculty (or existing visiting guest artists), and for the culture of a program to change very little if that’s the case.

@BWmama Okay I saw your post so checked our Ball State portal today and it says decision made - admitted; current program - BFA; level - undergraduate; program - theatre, major and dept - theatre, theatre and dance, major concentration - musical theatre. Is that how yours looks other than waitlist? Does anyone know if that means it’s a yes for BFA in MT or does that just mean that’s the major applied for? It’s odd because D was academically accepted back in October, auditioned early, and never received any other notification and we never looked at the portal. It seems like someone from MT would notify if it was actually for MT so is this what everyone’s portal looks like and then it changes somehow after the artistic decision? Thanks!

@ourturn2 - that sure sounds like a BFA admit to me! Congratulations to your D! I don’t know if you were thinking you’d get a phone call but for larger universities the portal change is your notification. Your D will probably also receive a letter in the mail but it could take a while for them to get those out. @MTdreamz has a freshman at Ball State so she can probably tell you more.

@BWmama @ourturn2 I don’t believe that is full admission into the MT program at Ball State. On their audition page under NOTIFICATIONS it says they will call admitted students prior to April 15 to notify them.

@ourturn2 - Congrats, that’s looks like you’re D’s in. And, yes, my D’s portal says all of those things that you listed except the admit says waitlisted.

@afterp89 @BWmama @CaMom13 Thanks for the input and hmmm, the plot thickens! We were thinking that Ball St made calls and have been too busy to check portals lately. Guess we’ll call admissions on Monday and see what we can find out. I’ll keep you posted and BAL to your kids!

@mamaboyz Speaking for acting only, Montclair did not have early fall auditions, only starting in Jan. Here is the link which actually shows MT dates too starting in Jan:
https://www.montclair.edu/theatre-and-dance/admission/#appointment

Last year Ball State called everyone the same week in mid March. Seems strange they would put it on a portal this year. So that may be academic but I am asking someone who went to an on campus audition last week - I’m sure they were Rios how they would find out

@BWmama if you haven’t received information on getting academically accepted yet then I assume that is what that is. But trying to find out more

My S graduated from BW and indeed, every year or so the same rumor surfaces that Vicky is leaving the program - usually when she is participating in a non-college related project. I hadn’t even seen the CC post about it but knew about it because a number of people reached out to me. I had not heard one way or another.

I also heard last year that Aubrey Berg was retiring but I heard that from a current student. It can be disruptive to a new class of students when a strong department head transitions so naturally, when a rumor surfaces, it causes concern.
