The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

anyone know when Ohio University is notifying? .I am the" liaison "lol for some seniors that are auditioning this season and trying to get info is exhausting me ! a friend’s D auditioned there & they seemed to get enough of a positive vibe/feedback? to where they think for sure they will be admitted? (I know this is not a good thing to think but I digress…) thoughts?/ Thanks in A

@ourturn2 My D just auditioned in Chicago on Wednesday and her portal says exactly what you posted. They can’t have made decisions that quickly, right?

I wish we had screenshot all portals so it’s easy to look back and see when changes are made. She got her Ball State academic acceptance a few months ago, but I can’t remember what was listed as her major on the portal at that time. I did go back and look at the academic acceptance packet that came in the mail and it lists her intended major as: Theatre (Musical Theatre) and that was months before her audition. Below intended major it says: “Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to a particular major program. Questions about admission requirements for this major should be directed to the respective academic department.” So that and the fact that D auditioned only 3 days ago makes me think the portal decision is not related to the MT department decision.

My D received a phone call when she was accepted to Ball State Theatre program. This was 2 years ago so maybe there’s a different process this year. I’d definitely call the department on Monday to inquire about how they send out notifications.

I checked my endow and saw that my d got an email on March 8 (so the calls must have been the first week of March) with a form to send back to accept her offer at Ball.

Hi! I started a separate thread - @loribelle are you proud? - to list MT artistic notification dates and methods - please add your info from previous years (wiki) and any info you have so far this year. As schools start notifying, post the alert! Hope this helps make The Wait a little less stressful. Find it over here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/2125862-class-of-2023-mt-artistic-acceptance-notifications-how-when-where-p1.html?new=1

@DramaLlama18 I can’t believe we’re already here! Feels like yesterday when we were filming prescreens!

Question about walk ins after Unifieds. Were your kids told specifically to apply or not to apply after their audition? One school helper told DD to apply after she left the audition room when my daughter asked. One school had her fill out the supplemental piece and pay before her singng/acting audition and took all of the walk ins common app number to unlock the application for them to be able to apply but there was no “please apply” from the people in the room after the audition. Third school acted like they loved her but again no PLEASE APPLY conversation. So just trying to find out if you need to get the PLEASE APPLY comment to go ahead with the application or are we just wasting application fees by applying?

@frisbee3 Have been told to apply but past the deadline for many programs so can’t actually figure out how to apply. Will have to email or call schools on Monday

Hi all, for Ball State they usually call the MT’s around the first week of March. At least that was the case with my older daughter who is now in her senior year. I feel you have a question reach out through the auditions@bsu.edu email address or contact Andrea Sadler.

@frisbee3 I did 3 walk ins at NYC Unifieds and only one school specifically encouraged me to apply. However, I ended up applying to another one of schools I walked in at (even though they didn’t say to or not) and was accepted into the MT program. So I say go for it and apply!

@frisbee3, two schools (auditors) asked my D to apply at the end of the walk-in audition. One of the schools, with whom she had already applied and had been academically accepted, asked my D to email them if she was interested, indicating that not emailing was also a form of communication. One of the walk-ins was Ball State. That’s one of the reasons for my Q above re: “waitlisted” without having yet received academic acceptance. Hope this helps.

@theaterwork - My S auditioned on campus at Ohio U in January and we were told not to expect a decision until late February/early March after they had completed both unifieds and another on campus date. That said, another parent posted that their child had auditioned on campus in late fall and had already been admitted. So at this point we just play the waiting game.

My D is in the BFA MT program at Viterbo and loves it. She auditioned in Chicago and after a visit to the school, she was sold. I think you have to visit when school is in session to to really get a feel for the school. (After shadowing at a large University that she thought was her 1st choice, she quickly changed her mind.) The faculty at Viterbo is amazing and the facility incredible. They are a school that puts money into their program and it shows. My D is also getting a dance minor. If you get a yes from them, they are worth checking out.

I want to thank all of you CCers for so much wonderful advice. We attended Unifieds this year and would have not even known it was a thing without you. For our non-dancing, non-belting D it was brutal, 10 auditions, mostly all prescreens and mostly thank you, next (no questions, no interview) and even one no on the spot (ouch!). But as we used to say knocking on doors selling girl scout cookies, every No is that much closer to your next Yes. That being said, I can’t imagine 1) Not knowing Unifieds existed 2) tackling Unifieds without all of your advice. Honestly Unifieds helped her and us to ask if you she is really up for this career, rejection and all the catching up she has to attempt to do, and it is still a YES. This kid has grit. She now sees it isn’t just mom and dad saying she needs to work on certain things, as she got to see it first hand where there are some “opportunities for improvement” between Unifieds and some campus group auditions. There will be rough winds ahead and a few more campus auditions to go. But as one of you had said, you only need ONE. That will help us get 4 years of catching up under our belts (and apparently learn to belt). You folks have some talented kids out there and I hope you are proud. We are amazed, inspired and happy for what we saw at Unifieds and look forward to the world of performing arts to come in this next generation. Thank you again.

@NewMTDad Congratulations to your daughter for sticking it out. I am sure the right school will see her drive and potential. Just to throw this out there - my D is learning to belt as a freshman in college. It is not a requirement to get into a program and it is more important to learn how to do it correctly so you don’t injure yourself. My D got into half of the 12 programs she auditioned for without belting in her audition. She went in with very polished material and was able to convey emotion and I think that is why she was successful. Also good to mention that they “relearn” to sing in college and they are not expected to know it all going in. It might be better for your D to spend her remaining prep time polishing the songs and monologues she already knows and making them more interesting rather than trying to learn a new technique. Best of luck to her!

@Sammy8028 - I don’t think you can give me a link here on cc, but can you tell me what to Google to get to the Facebook post and comments you are talking about. I’m interested.

I’m going to say something about walk ins. I think it is a very rare occurrence for “top” tier (prescreen) schools to offer them. I can understand the resentment, but you don’t have the final stats in hand. I.e., what percentage of rare walk ins at prescreen schools actually get accepted? My guess is that the odds are even lower than that for prescreen applicants.

As this process gets crazier (with folks applying to more and more schools), there will likely be less and less schools that can even offer such walk in spots (unless weather cancellations get in the way). But what I can tell you is that your cc friends (and my year we really bonded) that get NO acceptances but who did walk ins – by and large have alternatives to the GAP year. Many of them LOVED the schools they hadn’t considered previously and this is VERY common. Meaning every year we read about many many kids who ended up being saved by these fabulous walk in programs.

So you are resentful for the 1 in a million chance of a walk in getting accepted to a prescreen school…and will paint red flags on all walk in schools- when thise walk in schools are saving many many talented kids every year? I think that’s a mistake. Personally, this process is so hard, I would not paint red flags on any program that could potentially be a good fit for your kid. Get your acceptances in hand and then write off schools for whatever reason you want.

@MomofJ5 Regarding the Victoria Bussert post I think someone posted that she took it down so you wont be able to find it even if you Google. But I read it before it was removed, if you have any questions.

I am all caught up now, so I see that the Facebook post in question has been taken down. I don’t understand why the BFA schools don’t like cc. I have found it to be a wonderful and supportive resource. In the non-BFA world, cc is a little crazy with people with perfect stats and extra-curricular activities showing they’ve cured cancer asking for a “Chance Me.” I used to get demoralized by those (for my older non-drama sons), but the BFA boards (here and acting have been amazing).

I have no skin in the game at BW, my S never applied and I have nothing but admiration for the program, But if I were Vicki, I would lead off every program info talk with: (1) I’m not leaving; AND (2) Here’s what I’ve done to allow BW’s program to live on in the event I get hit by a bus. I think the perception is that this program is ONLY amazing because of Vicki (I know- she did build it), but I bet she built this program on a solid foundation, etc.

At last year’s info session at BW she did address the rumor.

Based on what I’ve heard from coaches and directors at info sessions, I think they don’t like CC because there is an occasional person who says things like “x school only takes dancers” or “ x school really wants legit, classically trained singers” or some other misinformation. There’s also an occasional person who gets into a bunch of top ranked schools and thinks they know “the secret” and how to game the system, where the real secret was their student was a handsome male who dances like Fred Astaire and an amazing singer.

I’ve been following CC for about ten years and think I have seen this type of thing once every six months and there is usually someone who shoots it down quickly. I hope people will take a rumor or opinion and do further research. There are plenty of other resources available to check into programs, including alumni, school visits, current students and sometimes just looking at their department website.

RE: Department heads leaving. Brent Wagner was was chair of the Department of Musical Theatre for 32 years and is credited with building the department into one of the top musical theatre programs in the world… There were very few schools with an MT department at the time ~ he was a pioneer. He retired in 2016 and UMich is still thriving and is still tops in the MT education world.
