The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@Jpkcmo d got the same message today from Otterbein- for BFA Acting.
She thought they hated her at Chicago Unifieds— no reaction at all!
Congrats to your s!

@MomofJ5 @TexasMTDad To clarify re: Syracuse and the new acting/singing track. That program is part of the acting program (MT does not lose any spots). Additionally, for this year only, because the program was approved late in the game, the positions will be filled only from MT candidates who have suggested that they are willing to be considered for acting. So if any MT people are interested in this program they should let Syracuse know that they would be willing to be considered for acting.

Just reading comments prior to my last post. I do not think that this is considered a “consolation prize” at all. Syracuse sees a need for an Acting/Singing program (not all Broadway bound people are dancers) because they were losing really talented people who did not show that they had the aptitude for dance. This program would be different in that while I assume it’s true that actors can and do take voice at Syracuse if they are interested, this program would require acting and singing in somewhat equal measure.

Congrats too your d too. It would be nice to get one booked to prepare for the inevitable no that has to be coming from one or more of his schools. But we don’t have much say in this process. ?

He liked all of his auditions except 1. Cautiously optimistic.

Also for Actors who sing: Baldwin Wallace BFA Acting students can minor in Applied Music, which is singing!

@JeanneDArc thanks! D is accepted at bw for acting. Good to know!

I am laughing reading the comments about “dead to us” schools, etc. My D auditioned in 2016-17 cycle (yikes that seems eons ago) and I totally get this. Plus there will definitely be inherent scorn for those schools that your child auditioned for and really wanted to get in to and was rejected. My D still to this day says that about two schools in particular. It seems to stick with them.
Plus funny story we always say about one school that is a mid-top tier program…we had a train wreck of an audition there. Out of sorts from arriving just in time for check in and then not knowing D had to dance first as she wasn’t dressed for that, plus the accompanist messed up her one song & she kept going but knew she was probably doomed, then the one person in the room made an off hand joke about the state we are from (awkward) & it was just a mess. SO…the No letter came literally the end of the week I kid you not. We said they must have been writing the rejection letter while we were in the parking lot leaving.

I think something to always keep in mind through this whole thing is something I am STILL trying to keep in mind as a sophomore MT college parent…this is NOT life or death stuff here folks. Yes, your kids wants admitted to these programs & yes they want to perform and yes they “deserve” it, they “have worked so hard and trained for years” and on and on but at the end of the day you really have control over only so much. and when they actually start in their college program it doesn’t really get any better in terms of casting & competition & drama and political decisions and theatre mayhem. It changes from high school of course but you are now paying for the mayhem lol…

they may like their chosen school, they may not. They may end up transferring. they may change majors. I know you think that is impossible. I thought this too. But my D has already floated changing majors. She will always perform but in college it has become more apparent to her that she may not have the personality for the rejection and stress that goes along with always looking for the next gig to pay the bills. She hasn’t left yet…

I say all this not to be a bummer but to let you know that I know it seems like its the end all be all right now, TODAY, but try to keep things in perspective. SO hard I realize and really hard for your child but there are alternatives to explore if they don’t get an acceptance that is workable for you and your family. I know everyone says “it only takes one” but in reality that may not be true. It may be one school your kid gets into and they absolutely hate the school when they go visit. Or it becomes an unaffordable option…whatever. I do feel like your child will “make it work” most likely. they will make friends at wherever they decide to go and maybe it wasn’t the first choice, or even the second but no school mentioned on this board is horrifying lol so really it most likely will work out ok.

Hey All-
Just wanted to make everyone aware of the list of 2023 acceptances by school name. You can find it here:

@TexasMTDad That’s a real bummer that Syracuse didn’t give that info to all that auditioned. Syracuse was high on D’s list initially. D is an actor that sings well - but not a dancer. She auditioned at Syracuse (Acting) in November and that definitely was not said, and we were told vocal instruction would be extra when we toured last summer. Definitely influenced how D applied. Curious that Syracuse announced that in the middle of the audition season. Thanks for sharing.

I think there is some confusion about the new track at Syracuse. My son applied for MT, but was granted an acting audition. At the NY meeting, the director made very clear that acting students would not be considered for this program. He said, “if your son or daughter is not singing today,” the program will not be open to them. I and one other parent both asked questions to make certain we understood. There was no doubt about this. So, for my son, who’s singing is his strong strongest discipline, and whose dancing is not, there is no possibility for the new track. The director also stated that an acting student could attempt to transfer into the program, but this was highly unlikely. As an example, he said that (in his time there) no acting student at Syracuse has ever successfully transferred into MT. So, unless the people running the program have made a change to the entry requirements, that’s where it stands.

On a completely different note, I just saw a GoFundMe page for people to donate money to pay for the seniors at Point Park to do a NY showcase. Not sure how I feel about that.

@BeBop1 Does this mean Point Park does not already do a NYC showcase? Will this be a new thing? Or do they just not have the funding this year?

@BeBop ~ Is the funding for the students who would have to pay transportation and lodging costs?

Academic Midyear report question… Does anyone know if schools like NYU, BOCO, CMU, Syracuse require a mid-year academic report be sent to them. Would rather not, but will if its required? Its hard to tell because some schools require it but does it really apply to Musical Theatre majors? I did ask a school or two but sorry still confused if it applies to musical theatre. Our guidance counselor is not sure either, engineers, etc. will need it, musical theatre not sure

@collegehelp! D applied to Tisch as an Acting major. Her acceptance letter said she had to send mid-year, and end-of-year academic report. In addition, admission is contingent upon successful completion of current academic program at a level comparable to the one presented in her application. No pressure there.

NYU requires it. Our college/guidance counselor auto sent mid-year reports to all Common App schools. Believe NYU deadline is March but our high school took care at end of Jan.

LOL. @“collegehelp!” you have three schools there that have different criteria. I don’t think CMU or BoCo give a flying heck but NYU considers academics as 50% of the admission decision so it matters … but I will have to say @yellahamma my D had major Senoritis and as I recall her Senior grades were not up to par with her Junior year grades but she was still admitted to NYU for MT… I think the schools know what BFA auditions do to your ability to focus on school. Just know the kids shouldn’t slack off entirely.

@BeBop You would be surprised at how many schools have their students fundraise for their senior showcase. In the past few years, I’ve seen GoFundMe/IndieGoGo campaigns from students at Carnegie Mellon, Elon, truly all manner of schools. This is very common.

ETA: Not to say that I agree that students should HAVE to fundraise for their own showcase, but then again, I believe that showcases are of only marginal benefit to most graduating students (an unpopular opinion on this forum, I know).

My son sent his to CMU

Sorry - didn’t mean to imply that midyear grades shouldn’t be sent! If the schools ask for them, send them!
