The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@mteverlasting haha! We joked here about the programs showing her no love and breaking up with her. :))

I’ve tried to go back through and find the posts but I failed. Can anyone whose child has been accepted at Temple please message me? I have a specific question. Thank you!

@Anybodyhaveamap It is a THEATER BFA – Musical Theater Performance. I don’t know if it is new or not

@mindatwork my son was accepted to Temple’s MT program 2 years ago. Not sure that I can assist you, but I’ll send you a PM

@MTMom2019 My older one applied to GMU, but maybe I just wasn’t aware of it at the time. Could explain lack of MT in past seasons if it is a new track. GMU is a great school though, and they don’t do things half way in northern VA. I know the dance program there is very good, as is instrumental music. Facilities that I have seen for various performance were nice. Everyone was wonderful for tours, etc.

Ugh. 2 no’s on Valentines Day ?..CCM and Rider.

@FlaMTmom Same here - sorry!

@MToverload Thank you. Sorry your D got the same news. But as you said, onward we go!

@kittysmom12 - there are both pros and cons to a large program. If you look at the MT Schools - NYU-Tisch board someone else asked for feedback on what recent students liked / didn’t (linking thread) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/nyu-tisch-mt/2124194-general-information-about-what-its-like-at-tisch.html and I think the various replies were pretty consistent and hopefully pretty helpful. If you’d like more info please feel free to PM or ask on that thread. NYU is/was totally the right place for my D but I don’t think it’s right for everyone.

Sorry for the schools “breaking up” with applicants today but good everyone’s keeping their sense of humor!!! <3

Good morning all you relaxed parents! It’s another day in paradise and here’s to lots of good news!! And for any bad news that might come, I’m adopting the “dead to me” list. :-c

@lojosmo A showcase can get you representation. But representation does not automatically get you appointments. There’s good representation and bad representation. And even a good agent can only get so many clients into each audition. When my daughter was a child and had NY representation, she didn’t get into every audition. So it’s not like having an agent means you can sit at home and wait for the phone to ring, or your email to chime. You still have to go and stand in lines and attend those calls!

Has anyone auditioned and heard one way or another from Wright State? Just wondering what their process is…

@CTDramaMom - that’s why D didn’t sign with an agent…why pay them to get her contracts she can get herself? She gets appointments too, all by herself. D has classmates who signed with agents after showcase, and they’ve got zilch so far. Maybe it’s counterintuitive, but it seems to me that if you’re just starting out, there’s less of a need for representation than later. Now if CAA were to be interested in representing her …. LOL!

@lithpool My D auditioned in November and has received academic admission; in years past, they did rolling admission, but don’t seem to do that anymore (although I have heard of one boy who was offered an MT spot a couple months ago). Their last audition date is Feb 23 I believe.

To chime in on the showcase’s…

In the old days it was just maybe top 5-10 programs would have their showcases (NYU, YALE, Julliard, CCM etc) and CD’s and agents would really want to get a ticket in to see them (maybe just one per office even). They would not send assistants etc b/c they wanted first dibs. The Yale and Julliard actors (not MT) would literally get offers the next day and you would see them on tv within months.

Now every school seems to have a showcase and quite honestly the agents send their assistants or their interns (lol). This is one of the reasons going to a “big name” school could pay off. So even though there are ppl in the audience they may have literally zero pull at their offices. Now if a school is known to have 20 kids in their showcase then even less of a chance top ppl will attend. They want the showcase to be quick and painless after a long day at the office and before maybe seeing a show that night. They just want to see the top kids from this class total (of all schools combined). 5 girls 5 boys would be good.

This is also a reason maybe a Director at a certain school who has real relationships with a CD/Agent could help pull them in to attending their showcase (if at “lessor” known school).

If a school has increasing good people graduating then they will also pull in more ppl to attend b/c the buzz on that schools alumni have begun!

@CTDramaMom ~ I guess there is bad representation out there but you need to do your research and ask the right questions after showcase. You need to interview the prospective agent. I am speaking from my son’s personal experience and obviously mileage may vary. He has plenty of appointments from his agent. He and his agents know his type and what he is interested in doing. I think he has been on two open calls in three and half years in NYC and that was at the beginning of his career. Again, I can only report on his (and somewhat on his classmates) experience.

@mamaboyz Thank you for these thoughtful and insightful comments. This is, I think, getting to exactly what my original question was asking. I mean, of course, we all want our kids in a showcase to be seen to help jump start their careers. But if the number and size of the showcases is reducing the quality of them to the point that our kids aren’t being seen by people who can actually do something to help them, as you suggest, what’s the point? Speaking as a person in higher education, we see this sort of thing in so many areas nationally. University X has new awesome dorms and eateries (which have nothing to do with quality of education) and so Universities T, W, Y, and Z all need new dorms and eateries to compete - which raises tuition at all Universities. And sets up the next round of “improving” things to attract more students. One can see how every MT school that wants to be competitive in an increasingly competitive market “needs” to have a showcase.

I echo @lojosmo’s comments. S gained representation from showcase and only went on appointments once he signed (no open calls). They laser focused him on the right appointments and he did book work. We shall see as my other kids go through the process.

Oh man- I mentioned watching the mail yesterday. Now I’m seeing something from Arcadia U. Anyone else get mail today from them? My D will be gone for a few days and I’ll have to wait…
