@MTmama42 We were in Chicago on 2/2 as well. It was clear to me, more than any other school, that a redirect (particularly to the BFA Acting program) is just not a big deal. Plenty of opportunities for voice and dance, albeit the latter in perhaps a different ordre than a MT major. Congratulations!
@ZukAndSowash Thanks for the info and sorry to hear! When did your S audition for Montclair? My D did for acting in NYC at end of Jan and expecting a no, she wasn’t feeling it in the room. She’s also been accepted academically with in-state tuition (we are OOS) but have no interest in other majors. Thanks!
@DadOfMTboy
We saw your son in Nine at FWF. He is very talented! Glad to hear he is pursuing an arts career…
@MTmama42 Millikin has an excellent music program and a top choir. They have four choirs and the top choir is very competitive. Every couple of years the top choir does a European tour. There are videos up on youtube.
@GloriaVaughn Thank you!!! That’s really great to hear. My D is very active in the choir at her high school and really loves it. Looking forward to sharing this with her.
@El-Cee I know of two acceptances to Montclair from Jan auditions. (Both boys)
@peacemama That’s fantastic! Congrats!
I heard that Texas State started acceptance phone calls today… D is keeping her ringer on
Fingers crossing for everyone!!!
@Divamamacita - WOOoHooo! You only need one! But I certainly hope there is more to come!
@MTmama42 - congratulations to your D! I know it’s a redirect but it’s an artistic acceptance and she should celebrate it!
@CanaDad I knew I said too much. We’ll see what happens. “I would like to be heree… I would like to be theree”
@peacemama when did your s audition?
@NewMTDad and anyone else who’s student is thinking about taking a gap year.
First, that’s a great idea - -my D wishes she had done that before her first round of auditions back in 2016.
Second, if they decide to take a year off for whatever reason - to work on dance, piano, voice or just finger paint – whatever they do, DO NOT allow them to enroll as student in a local college thinking that they’ll get a head start on Gen Eds. or earn some transfer credits.
If they do, they risk losing their “first-time freshman” status when they apply to colleges next year. In most cases, once you graduate high school and begin taking courses even at a community college - the student is no longer seen as a Freshman applicant by a colleges admissions department – even if they would entering as a freshman in the BFA program.
Why does this matter? Because all those big ticket academic scholarships and talent scholarships your students are being offered now will NOT be available to them as transfer students. The scholarship money available to transfers at most colleges is a small fraction of what Freshmen are able to get.
There may be some exceptions to this rule, but in the dozen or so top programs that my D applied to in 2017 she was devastated to learn that even with a 4.0 and great test scores, she no longer qualified for the big scholarships because she had attended a semester of college after graduating high school. Definitely check with the admissions and registrars offices of any colleges your kid plans to audition for and find out what the policy is on this.
That said, I really do recommend a gap year if at all possible. The amount of growing that your 17 / 18 year old will do in just one short year will set them apart in the pool of applicants. Plus, they’ll have time to be better prepared, apply early to programs and gain experience working and garner material to write some awesome application essays.
Good Luck to everyone!
Great outcome! Very inspiring!
Outstanding advice NewMTDad, thank you!
Sent an email to the chair of Montclair, explaining how my whole family jumped for joy after reading CONGRATULATIONS! only to be crushed back down to size by the 2nd paragraph. I emphasized that I knew the letter came from admissions and not MT, but that maybe they could communicate with them about this. Who knows…maybe they will change the way they do things.
Good for you, @TempGuy2!
@TempGuy2 Ditto! I would hope the MT people at Montclair would be concerned. But given that this has apparently been going on for a while, I find it hard to believe they don’t know about it.
FYI last year Millikin had the same type of letter Congrarulations big on the top only to be rerouted to BA - and it WAS from the department. It sucked and I should have complained.
D got the same type of letter from Millikin earlier this year and then the Montclair email. If their intent is to encourage them to come anyway it definitely had the opposite effect. She immediately contacted both schools to withdraw her application.
