The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Just when I thought we had finished applying everywhere, D gets an email from LIU Post saying she is a scholarship finalist and to please apply but I highly doubt this is from the MT people. She did a walk-in in Chicago for them and filled out an application then. This process is so confusing, I wish schools would standardize. Anyone already heard results from LIU? Thanks!

@DadOfMTboy I think that’s a very awkward question to ask. What could they possibly hope to gain from that question?

@DadOfMTboy @NewToThis13 Not to mention that for so many of us the answer is the same…“everywhere!”

Schools that asked what other schools they are applying to were BU and CMU during the interview. LIU Post during a walk in. And on paperwork for SUNY Purchase. My D simply said or listed 3 of her 15 schools.

I think it’s overstepping a bit. S has been asked in the hall outside the audition room during conversation, by dept faculty during F2F interviews, but I was really surprised to see it in black and white on another school’s BFA application. With programs taking only 20 kids (or less in many cases) it should be obvious that they are applying elsewhere so why ask? Not to mention, the programs talk for sure. I’m guessing they already have a pretty good idea. JMHO.

@newtothis13 we got same email from LIU Post. But had only sent inquiry through their webpage for more info on their school. No application, no audition.

@DadOfMTboy - I have always thought this an awkward question that put the students in a very uncomfortable position. I have heard different trains of thought about this. Obviously they know all of these students are auditioning for more than one school. Some feel this question is to gauge who their competition is for landing you at their program. Others feel they may be hoping to encourage you towards a program they feel may better fit your voice type or personality. Still others feel they’re just being plain nosy. Or just gathering data about who auditions for their school. I don’t know what the true answer is. It may be all of the above. As far as how to answer it: I do think if it is your dream school, tell them! Yes, I am auditioning for a number of different schools but you are definitely my top choice. If it is not your top choice, you can choose to answer vaguely by saying something like I have applied to several different conservatory programs set on a university campus, along wth my local state university. Or, I’ve applied to a number of different programs in the Northeast. What I would not do is, if you’re applying to a smaller, lesser known program I would not say I’m applying to Julliard, Carnegie Mellon, CCM, Michigan and you. You don’t want them to feel like they are the “safety” even if they are. If you fill out a FAFSA, they will see everywhere you applied I think. So to me, there is a more personal reason for asking this question. It is a minefield to be sure. And I wish for the students, it was not asked because I’m not sure the best way to answer it. Hopefully others have better suggestions!

@DadofMTboy It is a very common question. Each of my kids was asked at least once. It is used, sometimes, as a conversation starter. In other circumstances, it is apparently meant to gauge interest in a particular type of education (e.g, you are auditioning for a University but the rest of your schools are conservatories - why? UMich was particularly tough on my S given his mix of University/conservatory programs). In a world of 3-8% acceptance rates, I think it is more difficult to limit school choices to one particular type of program.

So my D just received and email invite from BoCo for their online interview. Obviously, that’s a good step in the right direction. Any idea how many of these invites they mail out?

@BWmama everyone who applies to BOCO does the online interview.

Is this in addition to the online interview they did after getting through prescreens? My D did an online interview back in November.

@BWmama Not sure if it is the same thing, but when we applied to BOCO back in early November, we were sent a form for a video interview from BOCO redirected from “Kira Talent”. This was right after we were given an audition notice date. They said it was a requirement to video audition online. Did you receive that as well, or is this something new?

My D did the online “introductory” interview along with her prescreen. This one says “we have designed an online interview experience to help us get to know you as an artist, learn about your goals and aspirations, and understand how we can help you further your artistry.”

CalArts is the only one I recall who asked on the audition questionnaire they have you fill out at the time of audition. My D put her top choices. When D released her AMDA seat, in order to unsubscribe from their emails they wanted to know where she was going, of course she never answered that.

@BWmama Has your daughter already auditioned? If so, could you say when?

@KAT67 I’m confused. Is this AFTER auditioning? Because my S auditioned in mid-January, and there was no online interview before or after. I can’t imagine, with the number of applicants, that they have the time to interview every one of them.

Thanks!

@vvnstar Schools can’t see other schools on FAFSA.

@“boola boola” , My D auditioned regionally in Atlanta, GA, January 12. She filled out two questionnaires about her dance and MT training and experience for her audition.

@workinggirl25 Whew…good to know that you got the email and didn’t audition. I was scared for a minute. My D did apply and audition, but hasn’t heard anything yet. LIU is in her top 3 favorites after the audition process.

@NewToThis13 @workinggirl25 If your child has good academics posted somewhere like Cappex or Naviance, the LIU Post letter may be regarding academic scholarships.

@“boola boola” the link for the interview was sent as soon as pre-screens were passed and before the audition. I heard some kids forgot to do it and they resent the link…maybe this is a second online interview? We were told every applicant had to complete the online interview.

Sorry- double post!
