Does anyone know if Webster invites all applicants to Webster Preview Day or if it is a good sign? Just received an email about it, but hate to miss another day of school and pay to go out there only for D to not get accepted. She loved her audition at Unifieds, but we are trying to save visits for accepted schools or WL.
@luvbloominroses, I so hear you! My D went to a prestigious performing arts high school where kids routinely get into CMU and other “tippy top” schools. My D was among the kids that were “expected” to get into those tippy top programs - but she didn’t (although she did get four very good mid-tier acceptances, and ended up at Hartt, where she’s now happy.)
But at the time, what made the rejections SO much harder was the reaction of people at her school - kids and even teachers would ask where she was going, and when she said Hartt, they’d say in surprise “Really? You didn’t get into CMU or Rutgers or UNCSA? But you’re so talented!” They meant it as a compliment, but it made her feel a million times worse, like she’d “failed” by not getting into the MOST prestigious schools. It was awful.
So I totally empathize with everyone “expecting” your son to get into UMich and having to tell them he didn’t. This process is so hard and so unpredictable - so many talented kids chasing a tiny number of spots, and all the randomness of “type” and building a class. I wish people wouldn’t have the attitude of “Of course you’ll get into X school, you’re so talented!”, because there are NO guarantees.
I’m so glad he has other wonderful acceptances! I’m sure he’ll pick a program that’s a great fit for him and be happy.
Just wanted to say “Ugh, comments from people at school - I know what THAT’S like!” But it will pass!
@actorparent1. Oooof. Everyone taking the JOY out of where she is now thriving! Muggles.
SMH about anyone, anywhere saying a performer is a shoo-in for U-Mich MT. Seriously, that’s insane. So glad your S has great options @luvbloominroses, so sorry he’s sad - and go punch those people for me.
Right! It is one thing to say. “ You are so talented. You have a gift to share with the world that people are going to recognize! “
Quite another to assure a kid that they are one of 8 or 6 or 4 IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY ( 2000 kids or more) who will get into a particular program. Ridiculous.
@luvbloominroses We had this experience last year too. I remember S coming home from a voice lesson where his teacher asked him why in the world he was even applying to BW (of all places -really she questioned this one? We loved BW - not to mention that it’s a top tier school!) and others because he was sure to get into those tippy top programs including UM. S and I just shook our heads and went about our business. The whole thing is hard. It’s so hard to get people to wrap their heads around the fact that it’s harder to get into many of these programs than it is to the Ivies. Then after decision, you’re telling them that you’re so excited your kid got into XYZ college they never heard of that is AMAZING for MT, and again - they just don’t understand. It seems like you have to be in it to understand it.
@luvbloominroses My son’s private voice teacher, who graduated from a top music school, told him she thought he would get into every school he applied to, lol. When one of his 19 prescreen schools did not grant him an audition, he was completely devastated. That’s when my wife and I found out what she had told him. We had a long talk about reasonable expectations, etc.
But that rejection really rattled him, and clearly affected his fall auditions. When his first audition school rejected him in December, it exponentially affected his self confidence. It was not until NY unifieds that he fully regained his confidence. I attribute this primarily to the incredibly unreasonable expectations that his vocal teacher gave him.
So last night was difficult for him. But I think it was tempered somewhat by our attempts to bring him back down to earth.
For all bleary eyed, disappointed parents and kids, we too suffered through the waiting for a call from U-M last night. But I have to share the wise words of my 15 year old S speaking to his sister: “It’s not about the name, it’s more about the fit”. This is hard to grasp until that first month of school is behind these kids. But I heard an alarming statistic which is that 35% of college freshman now drop out due to mental health issues by November of their Freshman year. This is because the pressure is so enormous to get in, that once they are in, none of them are able to deal with the actual college experience and with the small failures and disappointments that confront them. I guess on the positive side, our kids will have experienced failure early on and have some coping skills.
hi there, how do you access the UM portal? Thanks for any advice

I hear it from the best authority - @speezagmom - that Molloy/CAP21 is emailing today - break legs to those who discovered this gem of a program!

Okay…March is here! Time for the acceptances to start rolling in!
LOL - @EastchesterMom I heard it (RE: Molloy/CAP21) from the How/When/Where thread so I’m not the ultimate source, but I am excited to see who found this gem of a program and decides to join our kids!
@EastchesterMom @speezagmom Now I am going to be nervous all day! Molloy/Cap21 is among the top of my D’s list but so far it’s been all redirections… and she had a rough audition season. So fingers crossed and prayers going up that it is the right fit!!!
@MTSongbirdMom Fingers crossed, and sending positive vibes your way!!
@MTSongbirdMom - fingers and toes crossed for you and your D!
@speezagmom what is the How/When/Where thread? How do I find it?
@jollyballoon It’s listed in the recent threads, called “Class of 2023 MT Artistic Acceptance Notifications: How/When/Where”… here is the link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/2125862-class-of-2023-mt-artistic-acceptance-notifications-how-when-where.html#latest
Re: campus visits. Your student will see a program very differently post-offer and the program/school shifts to sell mode.
