The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@goldenslipper We submitted Penn Sate on Sept. 18 and heard back 2 days ago.

@goldenslipper We submitted Syracuse on September 15 and heard back on Sept. 23.

@FalseCP I think that happens frequently as other schools encourage apps for multiple disciplines–wheras CCM has separte fee for each. My S made the same mistake when he appled to CCM. He called and didn’t even finish explaining before they said they would fix.

Great, thanks, good to know I’m not the only one. I sent in an email and hopefully I’ll get a response soon, I can only do one on campus day and I don’t want to let my ccm audition take up unifieds time.

We visited Penn State yesterday and I’m pretty sure that the head of MT said that they have ‘rounds’ of reviewing/responding to prescreens. They’ve reviewed and responded to all sent in by 9/30, now they’re on to reviewing the next round (by sometime in November I think?) and then there’s a later round as well.

@lilthom color!!

We did the exact same thing with the CCM application, we called and got it fixed.

@goldenslipper - she is MT! Audition is scheduled for 12/8 :slight_smile: Best of luck!!

So today was an example of what we can look forward to through this process. D got a “no” email from Elon for her prescreen… and then 90 minutes later got a “yes” from Pace!

Buckle up, it’s gonna get bumpy…

Anyone else stressing out because you don’t have a single prescreen recorded? Ha! That would be this house!!

@carriemc95
We’re in your boat but I don’t think we need to stress. We’ve got time. Schools don’t establish a deadline then expect everyone to get the prescreens in months ahead of time. Some will take longer to be confident with their submission.

@carriemc95 We haven’t filmed ours either. Trying not to stress because my D needs to stay calm. Hoping to get it done soon. D was advised to switch up some of her rep recently and she was not quite ready with the new material. Aiming to have them done in the next two weeks! Best of luck!

Thank you @El-Cee!

@carriemc95 @MTSongbirdMom - last year, we had all prescreens completed by 10/31, and submitted by 11/4. The only onoes we did not complete were: Ithaca (did not learn dance combo) and U Mich (completed some but not all, sent incomplete on day of deadline). Unless things have changed dramatically, you should be fine. ETA - if you are interested in BW or CCM - get those apps in NOW, and secure your date. If you are interested in CMU, it’s only their 2nd year of prescreens, so I’d make that one a priority too. BAL!

Keep in mind that if you meet the deadlines for prescreens you will probably be fine and offered SOME audition spot. The problem is that if your child is trying to fit everything into a particular schedule you need to get a PARTICULAR audition spot and that is hard to do as the deadline nears. I have my students create an ideal schedule to fit in all of their Unified and On campus auditions. Those are the dates they request. If they get their prescreens done early they will probably get those dates, the later they wait the less likely that will happen. Worse case scenario you don’t get EVERY audition booked or you have to do more travel if the Unified slots fill up. Somehow it all works out in the end :slight_smile:

@carriemc95 Ha! We have some of our pre-screens recorded here, but every week I say that we plan to have them done by next weekend, and every week it gets pushed back another week. It’s driving me crazy. :slight_smile:

Hey there. I’ve been able to read bits and pieces here and there because of my very busy schedule, which, of course, includes my D’s prescreens and getting homework completed, etc., but I haven’t had time to express my fear, anxiety and questions that I have. I will do that now!

It seems impossible, and after reading all of the posts I am more nervous than ever. My daughter is scheduled to film prescreens on 10/19 and 10/20. For schools that require prescreens, can you fill out the applications first and upload prescreens later?

Also, this academic acceptance is concerning to me. My D’s GPA is about a 3.0. Her PSAT I think was 1080. She just took the SAT last weekend. I’m sure she will have a better score. Should I be concerned about “academic acceptance”?

I am going to take my D to MARCAS because of our most recent experience with a BFA audition prep that my D was involved in. Professors from four programs were present and gave feedback to the kids. Three seemed interested, but FSU chatted with my D and I for quite a while and told her that she really wanted my D to apply there. The professor sent my D an email waiving prescreens and again asked her to apply. My big concern, of course, is this AA piece, BUT during the Q&A session, the professors all said that they’re not as much concerned with GPAs as they are the individual and their talent. FSU specifically stated that if she was wavering between two students, she would then look at the grades and other factors. So it sounds to me like my D should apply, although she really wanted to be closer to NY.

So my thought process was that my D probably auditions better than she might look on paper, although she’s been involved in theatre since she was little, and maybe she will get some waived prescreens or offers from this where maybe she wouldn’t have been academically accepted when simply applying to at least these non-prescreen schools.

Any thoughts on the above? Yes, I’m overthinking this, I am sure…

@BWmama Some thoughts on the date of prescreens - some schools (and I hope this is MOST schools but for every rule in this process, there are just as many exceptions) will review prescreens that are submitted before the deadline no matter when they are received (1st day or last day). Of course, you could run into an issue with passing a prescreen but not having an audition slot. I will say D2 submitted some early and some later prescreens (one or two right up to the deadline) and did not have issues getting an audition slot for the ones she passed.

There are a number of “test optional” schools (BW being one of them) if you she’s not happy with her scores. A 3.0 may keep her out of the running for schools that weight heavily the academic portion of the overall portfolio (Penn State, NYU, Michigan to name a notable few) but should not keep her out of the running at schools were the audition is more heavily weighted.

I wouldn’t worry. I was right there with you. My daughter is a TERRIBLE test taker and has only a decent GPA (weighted 3.986). The only one that has hurt her heart is Michigan because she knows she won’t meet the minimum unless she received some divine intervention while taking her SAT’s this past Saturday. Otherwise, it doesn’t seem to be causing too much of an issue. Where it will hurt is the financial aid that the schools can offer. They are typically based on academic performance. For example, she was just academically accepted to Univ of Arizona. They sent a sliding scale of what they will automatically offer money-wise based on GPA and test scores. Of course, my sweet angel fell to the very bottom. BUT - it is better than nothing.
Now, I will add on at the end that we know that some schools are just not possible because of her academics. We aren’t submitting to Penn State, Northwestern, or Michigan (and NYU was never on the radar because of the cost) because we know she won’t be looked at twice.

@artskids do you know other schools where they really value academics into their acceptances? I have a good GPA and SAT and would like to know schools were I may have an advantage. Are there also schools that give a lot of financial aid for good scores? Thanks!
