The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Thanks, @NYDreammom, I’m aware of that, but you can go either to the LA campus for 2 years to complete the degree portion there, or they also have a partner program with The New School, so the credits are taken there (and he can stay in NY). It’s not like in my day where it only offered the 2 year certificate.

From The New School website:

Graduates of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) can transfer credits to The New School and earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in a flexible, self-designed academic program.

Note: The BFA in Musical Theatre program is only for graduates of the AMDA integrated program. Graduates of the AMDA studio program are also invited to finish their bachelor’s degrees at The New School in the Liberal Arts BA/BS program.

Of course, a 4-year program in the same place would be ideal, and it’s something to take into consideration - but I think, given the amount of working actors who come from AMDA, you also have to acknowledge that they are getting ample training and opportunities after graduation.

Another thing to consider is that they have to get invited back for the 2nd year, so it’s not guaranteed.

Here’s the CC thread about the FBI Admissions frenzy for those that want to follow. Comments are flooding in. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/2130479-feds-uncover-admissions-test-cheating-plot.html#latest

I just tuned into this amazing thread this morning and while I haven’t read all 326 pages of it, I did spend some luxurious time reading the last handful of pages and just being so heart warmed by all the kind, supportive, raw and vulnerable posts. Keeping it real folks. I want to clap or cry with each of your announcements of acceptances and rejections. It’s such an extension of the feeling of being at Unifieds and walking those halls just wanting every single one of those kids to find their perfect placement and heaps of validation for all of their hard work.

Anyhow, S was just rejected by Point Park, but I think he’ll feel okay about this as he has been accepted by Cap21 & LIU - waiting on a couple other NY schools as he hopes to be in that area, as well as about 9 other schools around the country and Scotland. Such an amazing process to go through an almost daily experience of rejection or acceptance and to try, or try not to, find meaning in it.

Hey!!! My son got a no from Point Park. But after spending about an hour or so learning about how a gas dryer works on Friday (because my gas dryer was NOT working) and diagnosing the problem, I ordered replacement gas valve coils for about $20. They arrived today just before the no from PP. I took the front off of the dryer, replaced the coils, and PRESTO! I fixed my dryer. So, how you like me now Point Park!!! What…nothing…cat got your tongue…that’s what I thought! BAM!!!

@sedaley Yes, you can do that but I was addressing if you wanted/needed to leave and transfer to a different school completely.

@zukandsowash i’m backing away slowly…smiling and nodding…no sudden movements…

@NYDreammom Understood. It is a disadvantage in that situation, certainly. It’s another piece in a very complicated puzzle as you try to figure out what fits best for their needs.

@MTmama42 One of the things we have learned through this process is that our child has a special gift. We see that gift different than others. While we have a few MT offers from “middle schools” (that we generally can’t afford) we have gotten some great offers from “reach” BFA and BA acting programs and through all of this our child seems to have learned that she has gelled with the acting crowd much more so than the MT crowd. So while we have MT offers we are leaning toward some acting programs that have a fair amount of crossover with voice and dance and allow acting students to participate in musicals. There are a fair number of these. In the end if you can’t act it won’t matter how you sing and from what I could see at Unifieds most everyone is at least a passable singer. So do some research on the curriculum of schools. Many times there is not that much difference between the acting and the MT.

One of my “if we could do it again” things would be to do more research into other acting programs and not be so head strong that it has to be a MT program. I think she would have done will with some other acting programs rather than MT. There are lots of people in the business who either went to BA acting programs or no programs at all.

@mtkid01

Thank you for sharing the information and sorry about the No :frowning:
Interestingly, my son’s portal changed, today to “Not Admitted Due to Audition”
Was that your what your portal said? Seems rudely worded. I guess I am not surprised considering our experience with Rider was unpleasant in almost all ways. Except the young lady checking in the kids at Unifieds…she was really friendly.

@21stParent That is rudely worded. I can’t get into s PP portal, so I guess I have to wait on him to do it. :expressionless:

@PugsleyAddams thanks for the validation! I know I am stressed, sensitive and pretty much done with Rider but that seemed to add insult to injury. :confused:

I wish your son much luck with Point Park! :slight_smile:

@ZukAndSowash you are an inspiration!

@21stParent - they used the same wording last year and people said the same thing - seriously? Is that the best way you can phrase a rejection?

@ZukAndSowash - PP is tearing their collective hair out in fits of remorse now! You’re a star - they missed out big time.

@cloud7or8 @CaMom13 ahh, thank you friends.

@CaMom13

My thoughts exactly…this is an institute of higher learning and they couldn’t come up with better wording…two years in a row, lol!

@collegeboundSam Yes! Thank you! We met last weekend! Crossing fingers for you for Coastal - she was a no - she was disappointed, she really liked it there.

@16or32bars Our thoughts as well. Our D was accepted to some wonderful BFA Acting programs from her reach schools and is thinking of going that direction now, instead of the MT route. We were honestly shocked, as she has spent the least amount of time with this craft, but proud of her hard work at the same time. I also wish we hadn’t been so MT focused. Hindsight is always 20/20. Wishing your D the very best!

@21stParent - still waiting on Rider here as well… Not sure if we’re going to call yet but it’s very frustrating. TBH - we weren’t impressed with them at NYC Unifieds. A last minute change of time for the dance call which meant my D couldn’t attend, combined with the removal of monologues from the audition, left a very bad taste.

PP is a no for us as well. Nine to go. So grateful to have had some earlier acceptances as the last 5 results have been no’s…ouch, and next! Congratulations to the PP yeses!

@kittysmom12 .
Rider took the monologue requirements out at Chicago Unifieds, too. :confused: I’m sorry about the dance call change and that you are feeling unhappy with your experience with them, as well. :frowning: Our kids deserved better treatment, tbh. Luckily, most of my son’s Unified auditions were positive or at least neutral. I hope your daughter felt the same and I wish her some really good acceptances!
My son’s Rider portal did change today to “Not Admitted Due to Audition” so you might want to keep checking your daughter’s portal. GL!
