Does anyone know if you submit your SAT scores to NYU, because it is an SAT optional school for MT, do they check it in the portal that it was received initially then change it to waived later? Since everyones could be waived since it is optional? By the way, Who’s on first?.. LOL
I think they change it when the file is reviewed for completeness @“collegehelp!” But I don’t know’s on third!
@ZukAndSowash , yes, that’s literally what you do! It’s called a Letter of Appeal. You email admissions (preferably a specific admissions person you’ve been in contact with) and say “I want to attend your program, but the cost is prohibitive. I would need [specific dollar amount] more to make it feasible. XYZ College offered me [dollar amount] - can you match their offer?”
@ZukAndSowash - I would start by phone and I’d start with the drama department. I know that’s not the decision maker, but you could call them first to communicate that your kid REALLY wants them and ask how you go about getting an offer matched. When I did this at another school, the drama department told me (no surprise) I needed to contact financial aid, but they also told me to let them know if I needed their help. So then I called the financial aid office, made my pitch - and after they told me they would “consider” it, I contacted drama to ask them to help. In our case, we didn’t get a full match, but it was enough to make it work for us. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I would have gotten a good result with just an email.
@SuperDooper and @SB252001 we are visiting Millikin during Spring Break before D decides on acceptance for one of 2 programs (the other one is Coastal Carolina). Perfect timing to see Millikin’s production of Hairspray! Any thoughts or impressions you wouldn’t mind sharing about the campus, culture, or theatre department?
My D was rejected for Montclair MT but still wtg on Montclair acting. They told us we would find out this week. We haven’t received any socks. I want those socks regardless of the outcome. I want to re-gift them. I have family who lives in Montclair and going to their house in a few weeks. I think this should be a new topic “Montclair Socks”
Got the Montclair socks today. After S turned them down a couple of weeks ago. They must have a lot of socks! ?
Do you get the Montclair socks if you get in? I haven’t heard of anyone getting in yet, wonder if they get socks too.
Got socks too! They’re pretty cool.
@“collegehelp!” Yes, my D got in academically but not artistically and still got the socks.
S was accepted to Montclair MT earlier this month and received his socks yesterday! As others have mentioned, they had their last audition on Saturday, so I’m guessing decisions are still coming. Fingers crossed for all still waiting!
@MTmama42 Honestly, I really liked the school! (even though I was redirected). The campus is quite cute, it’s all very contained in one area which is nice. They have a lot of different theaters on campus and are even building another one, which you will see when get there. The students were all really nice, they explained that there is ALWAYS performances and shows all the time, every weekend. So, the audition and performance opportunities is endless. They are really into “business” so basically they really like student ran productions. Meaning, student directors, student choreographers etc. Millikin is also really into Greek life, most of the MT students are all in Greek life and they all said it was one of the best decisions they ever made. Plus, I believe it is cheaper housing
. The party scene is not super big the students said, Decatur is a smaller city so most of the kids just focus on their studies. The students were also asked what was the worst thing about Millikin and every one of them said the smell of soy, it stinks a lot apparently lol. It’s also really easy to minor in something. A lot of the MT’s minor in Dance. (not sure how interested your daughter is in dance). Hope this helped!
Wahhhhh no socks for DS. Oh well. Visiting Columbia in Chicago and LIU next week over spring break. 2 very different programs at very different price points. Wish him luck! Congrats on those acceptances!
Re: Viterbo visits - my D does not have spring break until MID APRIL!!! We won’t be able to make visits until right up against the wire so hoping to hear feedback from those who are visiting sooner. Also LIU Post for those who are going sooner. We’re going to be scrambling!
@CanadianMTgirl & @SuperDooper – Thank you both for reaching out regarding Viterbo!!! Here are some (okay, a lot of) questions we hope you can answer:
Q1: Are Acting majors diverse enough to also audition for MT shows in the real world?
Q2: Is there a dance minor or a voice minor for Acting majors?
Q3: Is there a Senior Showcase? If so, where?
Q4: Does Viterbo help their students get auditions for summer stock or other summer opportunites?
Q5: What are your favorite things about Viterbo?
Q6: What was your least favorite thing or what changes would you like to see Viterbo make?
Q7: How does the Catholic tradition affect the vibe on campus? We are Methodist, not Catholic, so wondering if there are any Catholic-related requirements at Viterbo.
I could have PM’d this, but I figured @CaliMTdreams , @mamallovesllamas , @azmtmom13 , @MTBackstagemom , @MagsmomMT2019 and others may also be interested in learning more. We are planning to visit around April 17-18, but just gathering thoughts until then. Thanks for your help!
@MTBackstagemom - we aren’t on spring break until April 13th and are in the same boat!
What are people’s thoughts on acceptances into acting programs when child auditioned MT? My D has 2 BFA Acting and 1 WL acceptances to very good schools but she applied for MT. It’s great to get accepted, but she feels like it’s a rejection of her vocals and dancing so she’s torn and confused. I know there’s cross training, so she’s not worried so much about the curriculum as she is about the seeming rejection of her other skills. She’s 2nd guessing her abilities… @soozievt I’m curious what you tell students since you are a college counselor. Thanks all for any feedback.
@CaliMTdreams I have the same concern. I wonder if every school is different.
@CaliMTdreams - she should take those acceptances as tributes to her acting ability!!! I would look for “fit” on school - what training will she get, what’s the student body like, location, connections - as key before excluding based on major. So (for us) a great fit acting program would have won out over a poor fit MT. But the programs are different, really different. If she has her heart set on MT make sure she doesn’t go to school where the Actors are kept away from “MT only” classes or opportunities because she’ll feel it as an ongoing rejection. I would make that call on a program by program basis.
@CaliMTdreams Everything I’ve been told so far is that during auditions they don’t ask where you went to school or what you got you degree in. So that tells me whether BFA/BA or MT/Acting doesn’t make a difference in their eyes. I would make the decision based on the schools accepted and what they offer and how your daughter would fit there. (There’s that word ‘fit’ again)
I find there are two trains of thought when it comes down to where you focus regarding skills (This has nothing to do with whether the school has greek life, a football team, private dorm bathrooms, or a gourmet dining hall. You’ll need to weigh those things separately).
1- Do what you do best and do it better than anyone else.
2- Focus on your weaknesses so they are no longer considered weakness.
The way I look at it, there should be balance. Acknowledge that your strengths are what got you to where you are today. They will help you get to where you want to go. You’ll also probably also have a lot more fun doing what you do best. Don’t ignore your weakness but don’t focus on them either. Minimize them as much as possible but recognize that there are some areas where you may never excel. This will help you deal with adversity and avoid using your strengths as a crutch. So to me, the key is balance.
So without knowing your daughter, that’s probably the best advice I can give as to which program, degree type, or major. Even when all the acceptances are in there is still a lot to think about!
