@NYKaren We are going too & put in a request for Cabaret tickets but haven’t heard anything back. Did you get a confirmation?
@artskids are you sure that is official EA and not rolling admission?
We are heading to Philly in a few minutes. Last minute thought for anyone else going: I am bringing additional headshots and resumes. Can’t hurt!
BAL to @BWmama’s actor and everyone else auditioning this weekend!
@BFAMTOrBust - I don’t think schools publish in advance when they have walk-in slots because they don’t know. The schools only have those slots when they don’t have auditions scheduled so for NY Unifieds they won’t know that for a while. I think the advice I’ve seen is to try for a scheduled audition at the schools that are already on your radar, then add in walk-ins as you can fit them in for the schools that fit your schedule. You find out who has slots by walking around the areas where auditions are held and looking for sign-up sheets that state there are open slots. Someone else can correct me if I have that wrong.
@Notmath1 I think early action (CCM may technically be rolling but if you auditioned in December, you had your decision before the end of the year). Traditionally, BW (and Penn State at least last year) did one round of early action.
@BFAMTOrBust there is no way to find out ahead of time which schools will have walk ins. For NY unifieds they are located at Pearl Studios. So you would need to get to Pearl Studios early and check the list
@BFAMTOrBust As a parent, it’s perfectly ok the first day to walk around early in the morning and ask while your student may be warming up or auditioning. Have some resumes in hand as they may ask for those then. Also, have your schedule availability in hand to schedule on-the-spot, allowing at least 1.5 hours between other auditions in case they run over. If the student is available, have them run around. Early bird gets the worm. Some do sign ups by day, some let you schedule the whole weekend on the first day.
If you request early action is there any disadvantage to that? Will they defer to RD if they have an interest? And early action is not binding correct?
I can’t wait to hear what you guys think of MARCAS. I will be curious if any are actual audition or of most are prescreens/callback style like SETC. Break legs everyone going!
@buggirl74 I read from college admission experts that applying EA or ED can lower your financial aid awards at all the schools on your list, including and especially the one to which you applied EA/ED. So they say to only apply EA/ED if it is your #1 choice and financial aid awards are not a concern.
@buggirl74 Early action is not usually binding. Some schools even offer non-binding early decision. A downside of early action is that you’ve put yourself in a more competitive pool of students.
You could also be deferred to regular decision. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Understand that most of the notifications you get in the fall are No and Maybe! I don’t really consider a Maybe as an early decision! ?
@MTMom2019 I want to say we did when we clicked on the email link. Said my son would get a free ticked and $25 each for me and the hubby
@buggirl74 I don’t know that there is a disadvantage but for most audition schools there is no advantage to applying early action. Early action is non binding. However, for an audition school most of them don’t give decisions before March regardless of whether you applied early action or not
It’s been over 4 years now since my S and I went through this process (BFA MT 2018) but he applied to one EA school in our area, Emerson. He wasn’t super interested in colleges so close to home but combining an early December audition with a tour of the school seemed like a no-brainer and a low-stakes way to get some practice in before the winter onslaught of auditions. To our surprise, he really liked the school and the program, and even more surprising, he was accepted just about a week later! It was a huge confidence booster to know he was competitive, not to mention very reassuring that he’d be able to go to college for MT somewhere if all else failed. And having that early acceptance took some of the sting out of the rejections later in the audition season. (He ended up elsewhere but did give serious consideration to Emerson, especially since they were the first to say “yes, we want you”!)
So, I’ve been on the phone with my wife and D most of the afternoon… MARCAS could not have gone any better for her. Yes, many of the schools used it as a prescreen, but after the dejection of not passing a majority of her video prescreens, this gave her a huge boost - she got called back and invited to audition for 24 schools!!
Best news of all came early. The first table she went to see was LIU Post. They told her they loved her audition and started to talk about steps to apply. She cut them off and told them she’d already been accepted academically (in fact to their Honors College)… they looked at each other and said, “great, then you’re in!” She asked you mean totally in, no other audition? They said, “nope - you’re fully in.”
She also got great news from West Virginia, a program we visited in September. The program director didn’t recognize her at first (she wore sweats on the campus visit), but then remembered her, said he loved her audition and all she needs to do for acceptance is to send in a dance video so they can see how she moves.
Tons of pressure off moving forward and we may now trim the list a little - LIU Post was already high on her list after working with one of their guest professors while in the Adelphi summer program and driving through campus. She also really loved her visit to WVU and would be really happy there too. Now she’s focused on the handful of higher profile programs she’s had her eyes on.
My son was accepted to LIU Post for theater tech and design. He opted not to attend because it’s too close to home and it was too expensive. However, during his decision process, we attended some accepted student activities and a scholarship dinner at the president’s home intended solely for prospective theater students. EVERYONE we met there was lovely and welcoming. The students we spoke with loved their program. H wishes that we could have worked it out for him to go there but the only way would have been for him to live at home and I didn’t think that was the right solution for him. My son was also accepted to Adelphi, same decision but we didn’t meet as many people or go to as many functions. Good luck to you.
@techmom99 Thanks! The environment will be huge for her. She loved Adelphi and it would probably be one of her top choices if they offered MT. Really didn’t like Hofstra and was ambivalent about Molloy. It really is about finding the right fit.
For any of the others who were at MARCAS, my D was in a maroon dress and her mom is Korean. I’ll be with her at NY Unifieds and both of us will be with her in Chicago. Feel free to say hi.
@buggirl74, in terms of Early Action, I have not heard any disadvantage to applying early. Sometimes, auditions will let you know earlier if you apply early action vs regular decision, but sometimes, the schools make the decisions at the same time. Early action sometimes puts you in a pool of more competitive applicants, but sometimes, it can increase your chances. If you look at the Big Futures website, you can get stats for the % accepted for early action, early decision and regular decision and see if there is a difference.
@love2share, I think there is a difference between early decision (where you select one school and must commit financially) and early action (where you tell the school you want to know early and based on the schools standards, they will admit you early based on your stats). I’ve actually heard from some schools that if you apply earlier, you may get more merit aid. You can also get more merit aid if you apply early for schools with Rolling Admission. This means that they tend to take applications as they are received. Sometimes, the time at which you apply won’t matter, but you can always ask if you want to know.
Anyway, if you haven’t applied early action, no worries, but I think it wouldn’t hurt (and may possibly help with merit depending on the school).
Just curious as to what schools have done academic acceptances before the auditions?
