The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@NYYFanNowMTdad my son (rising senior) is also a student at LIHSA–welcome!

@lovetoact which " regular HS" does S go to, does he go to LIHSA in am or pm?

@NYYFanNowMTdad, SI Yankees are OK, but they’re no Brooklyn Cyclones

Good luck to your daughter at CMU Summer Program! That’s awesome! I’m a planner too and started to gear up for this sophomore year in HS. I think I scared myself but researching too soon, but I do feel that starting early gives you the advantage of knowing the winding, tricky road ahead in Senior Year. Guess we are as ready as we’ll ever be!

@NYYFanNowMTdad both my D1 and D2 did the CMU summer program between Junior and Senior years. I think I like it before Junior year better! They do learn so much - it is great that she will have more time to incorporate the material and it will free up her Jr/Sr summer.

Hi everyone.

After reading these boards for 2 years, I can’t believe it’s finally our turn

I am mom to an auditioning MT or acting aD. She’s been interested in theatre her whole life and never grew out of the “dress up” phase. Also live in Maryland, where there is a very active community theatre scene. We homeschool and have been fortunate to have a lot of theatre programs around. My daughter aspires to work in regional theatre and combine that somehow with being a teaching artist or a community college theatre teacher. She loves musical theatre and acting equally and is applying to programs that cater to both.

Right now, my daughter is in Canada at the Stratford Summer School. It has been a great experience. She is studying Shakespeare, but they also have a musical theatre camp. They spend all day in class and then dress up for the evening and attend shows for the festival.

Thank you to the person who posted the Mid-Atlantic Regional auditions. That looks interesting. I grew up right outside Arcadia college, which was called “Beaver” college when I lived there. I’d love to know more about this program as it was a great, small school all those years ago…so, if anyone who has info could message me, I’d greatly appreciate it!

I also wanted to let people who live in the Mid-Atlantic or Virginia area know about the Virginia Theatre Conference. If time/money permits, we are going to add this to our list. It is a very reasonable cost and they have dance workshops, and a lot of musical theatre workshops that look amazing. They also have a chance to audition for 25 schools at once and if the schools like you, they will give you a “call back”, where you can meet with college reps. The school list isn’t out yet, but here’s the list from last year. https://vta2017up.sched.com/directory/artists. Oh, and you don’t have to be from Virginia to join!

Anyway, looking forward to supporting each other through this fun and intensive journey.

this thread was closed…anyway to make it a " stickie"

My daughter just completed her Shakespeare short course at RADA in London, and she had a BALL! It has been fun to hear about all of her adventures.

Now that the summer is drawing to a close, I am starting to feel anxiety over the fall! I wish that each school would post their audition dates already! The planner in me is going nuts trying to figure out our calendar!

I know! We were just checking this weekend and can’t believe that some aren’t posted yet!!

My rising senior S will be embarking on this wild MT college audition ride so very soon! He is currently at NU Cherub’s Summer program (loving it!) and doesn’t get home until right before school starts. So Fall will definitely be very busy at our house with applications, college lists, etc. Starting to stress out about the time crunch, but I guess as long as we have some safety schools he should be ok. He also is very interested in strong acting programs and MT ones. He would love a MT college program with a strong acting component. Hopefully he will land in the right one for him and be headed there this time next year!

My D17 graduated in June and is taking a gap year. We are in PA. She was cast in a regional equity production that will run Nov-Dec, so I am nervous that she will miss out on early auditions. Do you know of any MT programs that hold auditions on Mondays, as this is her only day off from the show in Oct, Nov, Dec. Also, have the dates on the Unified website been updated for 2019?

@hfstt201 yes the dates have been updated on the Unifieds website

@hfstt201 You will likely be out of luck trying to find any programs that audition on campus on Mondays. Most schools do weekends as they are working with current students during the week.

@hfstt201 my child was in an equity show fall of her senior year. We did no fall auditions nor did we do unifieds just auditions January-March.

Happy Common App Opening Day everyone!

BAL 2023 auditioners! S starts Wagner College in less than 3weeks, first auditions day 2 of classes.

@afterp89 Wagner is the exact description you made - traditional/city access, with many performing opportunities. WCT has 4 main stage, 3-4 blackbox, and several student productions yearly.

Arcadia University was S first offer (of 2), received before Xmas break, resulting from early December auditions. Was awesome to have early options heading into Unifieds. I was very impressed with Mark who heads up Arcadia’s program.

Rowan Unuversity was his other early offer. So he had MT BA and BFAs to choose from before starting the audition season. Really liked the growth and size of Rowan. Lots of positives for both schools and their programs.

@NYYFanNowMTdad my son is in the PM LIHSA session.

As we get closer and closer to prescreens and auditions etc, I’m curious as to where people are in their school selections…how many are currently on your S/D’s list? As we’ve been working on this for a while, we have anywhere from 12-17 schools on S’s list, depending on the day…we’ve found that some schools have come off the list, then resurface and we ponder some more…our numbers include some reach schools (the reach being academically, artistically or financially…a couple are all 3…but I’m hoping to knock those off the list), most are target schools, and 2-3 safety schools. And the big concern I have is that with so many schools, the on campus audition dates are the same weekends!! I guess we will need to figure it out re : unified, but even that’s difficult, bc we won’t know half of them until prescreens come back! Sigh…how about you all?

@lithpool My d still has 30+ on her list, but will narrow down to probably 12. Because she’s limited on how many travel auditions she can do, we’ll probably try to have her final list be schools she really considers a fit (maybe a little reach - competitive, expensive) just to be realistic.

@CaliMTdreams I found that a great way to narrow my sons list down was to print off the curricula of all the schools, remove any identifiers as to school, location, etc. and have S rank them on a scale of 1-8. (the first time I did it it was 1-5, but it didn’t narrow the field quite enough). I did it w him a couple of times which is much of how his list got created. It was a great way to see what truly appealed to him. Wishing you and your D well on this journey!

@lithpool My D has narrowed her list to 12 she is applying to (already finished or working on applications)with another three that she’s trying to talk to current students before making a final decision. We have the 12 auditions mapped out on the calendar (hoping it actually all falls that way), but not sure how we will add the other three yet. Like @CaliMTdreams suggestion, my D found looking at curricula blindly really helped her think about what is important to her and to narrow down her list. Best of Luck!
